My attention was caught by an advertisement on TV last night for Halfords (who sell everything you can want for a car and more) offering up to 50% of SatNav systems. That was excuse enough for me! My navigation is lamentable - even going places that I've been before. Several traumatic experiences have been had going on site visits for work in places as far afield as Worcester, Lowestoft and Bury

With more and more people using Sat Navs to get around in their cars, it was only a matter of time before this was going to hit the mobile phone market. Certain mobiles already come with this kind of technology integrated into their software, Wayfinder however allows mobiles that are able to use [...]

As I mentioned previously I came home from uni on Sunday. I actually really impressed myself on my journey. Firstly let it be known that I hate driving. Driving in the snow on the way home was not as terrifying as I expected it to be. It was scary but I didn’t seem to mind [...]
This GPS navigation device with DMB has a 7 inch TFT LCD screen which is complemented by a circular 1.15 inch mini PMOLED display as an extra step towards easier user interaction. It will come in handy when confirming operations or showing the next turn you need to take when navigating. The GPS system on board is also equipped with a 1.3MP digital camera which will capture an image of what’s in front covering everything from 5 to 95 degrees and it will also store the image. The software is also smart enough to take pictures only when it senses motion.Other features include multimedia capabilities, supporting USB port as well as a USB host… (Via NaviGadget.)
Road safety group Brake says Sat Nav devices on-screen maps should be banned and drivers made to rely on their verbal directions only. But that would be just like having your partner reading a map, and you all know how well that goes. You'll end up rowing with the woman on your Sat Nav.I think the bigger problem with Sat Nav is people taking what it says as gospel. Yesterday there were pictures in the papers of a £96,000 Mercedes submerged at a flooded ford after the driver drove it in there because her Sat Nav told her to.Do you remember at school when you got told off, the teacher would say, "Why did you do that?"And you would say, "Because he told me to."And the teacher would come back with, "Well, if he told you to jump off a bridge, would you?"Apparently it's a yes, if his name is Tom Tom.
Physorg.com reports that mischief-makers (or worse) can hack Europe's Radio Data System with relative impunity, sending in-car sat nav systems spurious information. Andrea Barisani and Daniele Bianco from consultants Inverse Path demonstrated their hack to security professionals meeting in Las Vegas for the annual Black Hat digital self-defense conference. "We can create bad weather, fresh snow, full car parks, accidents... close bridges, roads or tunnels, and the SatNav will pop-up a detour." The Italian hackers also claimed they could trigger pre-programmed alerts: "air raid," "bomb," "bull fight," and "boxing match." While Barisani called his handiwork the "keep your parents from getting home attack," the breach highlights the dangers of the growing field of automotive telemetrics.
Auto Express reports that our doubts about the integrity of two-way electronic automotive communications are fully justified. The mag has uncovered a £700 device that emits a radio wave that blocks the signal emanating from global positioning satellites. As a result, the car's on-board "black box" can’t record movement data. The jammer also blocks mobile phone signals to stop the black box from sending information back to its base. Bottom line: a jammer-equipped car would be invisible to a GPS-based road charging system. (Not to mention the possibility of jamming someone else's car.) And that means that the UK's movement towards Big Brother policing "pay as you go" road pricing could be stymied by industrious hackers. Of course, Europe has already outlawed passive radar detectors and (I swear) deploys radar detector detectors. The cat-and-mouse e-games could just be beginning.
After enough inter-company Powerpoint presentations to stupefy marketing mavens in three companies (Google, Yahoo! and DaimlerChrysler Research, Engineering and Design North America), Mercedes is adding a "Search and Send" function to its OnStar-like telematics and emergency response system. You search for destinations on either Google or Yahoo!, press "send to car," jump in your mighty Merc, press the i button on the Tele Aid system and decide whether or not to start your odyssey (not Honda) or save the info for laterhosen. The feature will be available on the S-Class and the new C-Class from September 5; no word on retrofitting. Nor do we have any info on possible security breaches, as the system also allows "friends" to send you route guidance info. Given our recent report on compromised real-time traffic info, is that a hacker's heads-up or what?
