Sankeys expands, birthday plans and aftershow launch
Now that Warehouse Project season is upon us, you'd expect Sankeys to prepare a straw-filled box for a turtoise-like hibernation period. Not so, in fact the club expects even more clubbers to pass through their doors, and they need more space! They plan to make the first floor even bigger, which will take the capacity upstairs to 350 with a total of 1,150 patrons across over both floors.Sankeys First BirthdayIt's been a whole years since Sankeys dropped the 'Soap' from it's name, and they're planning a weekend of festivities. 80 tonnes of Sankeys sand
Urbis and Sankeys have joined forces and are promising a 'Summer of Sand' for Manchester. 80 tonnes of 'fairtrade sand' will be shipped in from the Bahamas and spread out around Cathedral Gardens. The beach will be open from from noon until midnight, and will feature palm trees, caribean style bars with music and sports events. The beach will be right next to the Urbis building, so beachgoers can make use of the facilities there, and additional security staff will be drafted in to make sure the event isn't taken over by scallies. The event is still at in the early planning stages, but Urbis are hopeful that it will go ahead. With temperatures in the city already on the rise, this could be a good move for Sankeys and Urbis. The latter has struggled to tap in to the under-30's market, and has recently hosted clubbing events for Million Dollar Disco and Yellow in a bid to broaden its appeal. The aim is to build on the success by hosting what could - pending approval - be one of the mor

      Sankeys Defaced
Sankeys Wikipedia entry (which I wrote, a bit) is under attack!Such is the way with Wikipedia, anyone can log on and change the contents of the page and disgruntled clubbers have been 'adjusting' it to reflect their own opinions..."It is run and promoted by a complete cunt called David Vincent (don't call him Dave) who's own ego is bigger than the whole Sankeys and Tribal Gathering ethos apparently. This has led to one of the best clubs in the country having it's heart ripped out and replaced with a shit paint job and utter knobs wearing scarves and sunglasses indoors."In general Manchester doesn't get much coverage on Wikipedia, as their Manchester Nightclubs category contains just six listings (and only four of those are actually open) but their articles on the Hacienda and the Boardwalk are informative, if a little too short.Whathappenedlastnight guide to Manchester

      Sankeys Is History
Not content with already leaving an indelible mark on the UK club scene Sankeys have gone one step further, the Manchester institution is really becoming a part of history. The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester launched an appeal, and a new exhibition opens today, to encourage local people to come forward with their own personal stories of working in the city's manufacturing and textile industries. You might wonder where the link is to raving all night long to techno and house, but before Sankeys was a club it had a very different role - soap. Of course for some the Sankeys Soap name merely seemed like a late-night dreamt-up moniker, but the real history of the building overall was many years spent making the bubbly stuff that kept many millions clean throughout the United Kingdom and was a key part of starting the industrial revolution.Sankeys itself was founded in the late eighties, enjoying a second incarnation which was a bold move for all concerned.
