Working from a Calendar to Keep my Sanity Intact
The bright side of insomnia is that while you're awake, you can plan your next three weeks blog posts. The dull side of insomnia is that once you go to sleep, you're likely to forget everything you were thinking about just before you drifted off to sleep. So this week I have some actual goals,... ...

I had been blogging a little about how the Guppy is teething and is very clingy and cranky, and also how she is not sleeping at all.Well, it only went downhill from there. The Mermaid came down with this mysterious cold/slight stomache bug. It was frustrating because it was one of those ones that we simply could not get rid of. It wasn't too horrific, she was able to continue on to play and learn, but it was enough of a nuisance that she was cranky and that we missed our homeschooling and playgroups for two weeks.Add to that the fact that the Guppy's teething got worse more than I ever realized it could get. The Right Foster Home vs. My Sanity
We are working so hard and somewhat successfully to acquire wonderful foster homes so we can spread the hard work of caring for rescued Shelties and Collies across many people and many homes.  So now, thanks primarily to the hard work of SRU’s Foster Administrator, Shannon Tew, who is an ace organizer and asks excellent questions, delves deep and comprehensively evaluates foster homes, we have some great foster homes.  (I need a photo of Shannon to share with everyone.) The next step, which seems to be really hard, is to determine which of our rescues is a good fit for which of our foster homes.  I’m not sure why but this seems to be a really difficult step to take.  Well, I can identify some reasons for this.  I’m reluctant to move the Shelties that haven’t yet been evaluated by our vet, given needed dentals, or haven’t yet received other medical work they might need.  I think this artificial barrier of my own creation is something I’m holdin

Huckabee Has Another Moment of Sanity For a Republican
I would never consider supporting Mike Huckabee because our views are so diametrically opposed on social issues. I am not surprised by recent signs that he might make a legitimate challenge for the Republican nomination as I’ve wondered why social conservatives didn’t rally around him as the most rational and consistent proponent of their views. As Huckabee’s position has improved it now looks like the Club For Growth knew what they were doing in launching attack ads against him over the summer as it now looks like the religious right might not fall in line behind the more mainstream Republicans who pander to them like Giuliani and Romney while possibly only pretending to share their views. At times I’ve quoted significant areas of disagreement with Huckabee where I’ve also questioned if he wasn’t a bit out of touch with reality, such as in raising his hand to the debate question indicating he does not believe in evolution. At other times he seems li

While this strike goes on, these shows and people will be off-the-air effective immediately:The Daily Show with Jon StewartThe Colbert Report with Steven ColbertThe Tonight Show with Jay LenoThe Late Show with David LettermanThe Late Late Show with Craig FergusonLate Night with Conan O'BrienMy knee-jerk reaction is to love that someone is standing up to the big media corporations, regardless of their reasons. Keeping Your New Year's Resolutions... And Your Sanity
By: Laura WatkinsSimply put: holidays are a time of indulgence. We eat more food, buy more stuff, see more people. It's easy to get caught up in the snowflakes and tinsel and make somewhat unrealistic New Year's resolutions only to become so frustrated that we put away our resolutions along with our fruitcakes and mistletoe and only bring them back out when the next New Year rolls around. The "holiday spirit" is an elusive beast, spreading goodwill and festivities for only a short while. Once he flees, we're often left only with the guilt of overindulgence, too much eggnog, and a lofty plan to really change for the better this year. But how do you make it from Point A (the current reality of a somewhat post-jolly state) to Point B (the next New Year with last year's resolutions neatly checked off one by one)?Think of your resolutions as a year-long to do list. Buy a calendar and write reminders and motivations for each of your tasks. You don't have to tackle them all at once, but yo

      Getting My Sanity Back
I finally feel that I’m getting my sanity back ...at least however much of it I have left. This last month of being back has really been a blur. I have only had little moments here and there where I have been able to look back on this trip and take it all in. Between coming home, returning the Jeep, giving several lectures, trying to find a place to live, being broke, and seeing friends it has been a big rush of everything. However, once again I am back home in Baraga. Coming back to Baraga wasn’t the most desirable of things to do right now, however it was the most practical. I have a little my space, a little more freedom, and I have to say there is a lot of relief being in a familiar place. There’s just not much to do! I’m so used to being in new and unfamiliar places that that’s what I long for. Hoping to move to a new place perhaps. After being home for just a couple days I am much more relaxed than I was. And of course I can’t go wrong when I get to live off of

      Sanity Equals Limits and Boundaries
I heard someone say "sanity equals limits and boundaries" many years ago and the concept has stuck with me ever since. There are a lot of useful ways to apply this philosophy to daily life.To clarify, I use the word "limits" to apply to the self and "boundaries" to apply to others. For example, if I set a time to go to bed at night so that I don't stay up too late, that's a limit. If my family doesn't answer the telephone during dinner, that's boundary. Limits help us define our own behavior while boundaries are a reaction to the behavior of others. In short, your boundary is where others end and you begin, while your limit is where you stop yourself. One is measured outwardly and the other internally. How is it true that "sanity equals limits and boundaries"? If the opposite of "sanity" is "insanity" or, more generically poor mental or emotional health, then think of any psychiatric or emotional disturbance. Depression is sadness without limits, psychosis is fantasy withou

Health Tip #1: Seven Tips to Maintain Your Sanity in Times of Stress
When it rains, it pours. I'm not a big supporter of cliches, like the "pot calling the kettle black" and such. Seriously, what the heck does that mean? But, sometimes these little annoying words can really just fit. I like to piece together sound bites to enrich and simplify your life, but also to bring laughter. Today's piece is a bit more serious as stress from difficult life events is no giddy matter. And as hardship is often oddly twinned with other difficulties, coping skills must be bolstered. So, here are my top 7 tips for getting through it all.1. Look for joy in little things: It may seem silly to enjoy the warmth of a cup of coffee or tea first thing in the morning or the smell of fresh sheets, but happiness isn't about large chunks of money or the largest house on the block. It is simply a string of moments and simple joys. If you don't appreciate and notice these tiny bits of fun, they will pass you by. And if you are a cranky monkey, or unimpressed unless huge successe

She never gets a real present – just me showing up on her doorstep.)I glance around the nearly empty waiting area and, as time passed, my hopes of the flight not being completely full dwindled at the sa

      THE SANITY CLAUSE
SPARKY: Birdy, are you there?BIRD: Right here, Sparkers! Got the day off for good behaviour again?SPARKY: Yeah. (sighs) I have to appear at the sanity hearing.BIRD: Crikey. For the Buff, y'mean? That was for real, like?SPARKY: All too real for my taste, man.BIRD: What taste? Buffers said you can't taste a bleedin' thing since you went off the sauce all of eight years ago.SPARKY: Eight and half, man, but who's counting?BIRD: All right then, give us the skinny, dude. Has the randy old Buff gone off his melon?SPARKY: That groovy cat's been off his melon as long as I've known him -but he's outdone himself this time, man.BIRD: Good Lord. . . let me guess. He's acted out his fantasies about his therapist, innit? The Jenny Agutter/Annette Benning hybrid? He's gone and jammed his great gnarly nappy head up between her porcelain knees and goddess-like thighs and given her both barrels, er, horns, like?SPARKY: Oh, he did that many celestials ago, man.BIRD: What? And he wasn't arrested?

      Some sanity in the courts.
Today the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled that the detainees at Club Gitmo do not have the right to appeal their cases in US Courts. Why is this even in the court system, the...

      Searching for Sanity
Not much inspiration to write this week... I saw about sixty patients during the past week. The vast majority had either lost a loved one in the past year, been beaten or raped by a loved one in their lifetime, or wake up in pain daily from losing the battle to an addiction or co dependent relationship. There were a few cases that were uplifting. Without such this job would become unbearable. I've come to accept that my purpose is more to walk with people through the troubled times and try to educate and equip them to one day fight the battles alone. One of my mentors in residency training taught me of the three types of patients a psychiatrist will encounter; 1) Those just passing through. You may only see them once. They either get what they need at the time or decide you can't provide it. They then move on usually not returning more than a time or two. 2) Visitors are the second patient type. You may see them every few months. They are usually reliable and in general compliant.

      Sanity!
In the last two days big demonstrations have been going on in Down Town Beirut. They started on Friday, with a slightly bigger demonstration than the 8th of March 2005, when Hezbollah went down to the street to thank Syria, but smaller than March the 14th, when the current majority (Hariri, Joumblatt, and Geagea; in addition to Aoun who is now allied with Hezbollah) marched to the streets and were able to kick the Syrians out of Lebanon. This time numbers are meaningless, the country is split down the middle (give or take 5%). The two parties must understand that no one can win, and the only solution is a compromise. Unfortunately, Hezbollah and their allies are playing a very dangerous game. They are making the same mistake Israel made in its last war against Lebanon, they went into a battle with unachievable goals, assuming that they will topple the government. And the longer Siniora's government hold on to power, the more pressure they will have to apply, and the harder it wil

      Finally, Some Sanity Prevails
I'm actually surprised that some sanity prevailed in the prosecution of Shibu Soren, the politician. Its probably the first time in Indian politics that power wasn't misused in hindering the legal process. For the first time, I did not look at the front page of the newspaper and go "WTF????"Good stuff. But one thing I can't believe. Okay, actually two. One, this idiot was still kept in power though he had a major murder case against him. How the hell did the Prime Minister trust this bugger and put him in the council of ministers, I guess its like one of those universal questions that will never be answered. And along with this story, was this piece of story. So it was kind of a double delight for me, seeing that some sanity is prevailing in the country's legal process, and powers are not being misused.Oh, and the second thing that I could not believe... what's that you ask? Take a good look at this pic, and tell me how one cannot say that this moron is a freaking psycho??? He loo

Its 9am and you see sitting in the boardroom of ScrewedCo, surrounded by Rupert, Rob and Dirk, a managing director from the Holland office. Dirk is a funny animal. The reason he is in this meeting is because he knows the CEO through social circles in Amsterdam. In fact, Dirk doesn't have a clue as to why we are seeing ScrewedCo. You sent him the presentation at 4am, just when you sent it to the

Can Sanity be broken down into achievable targets?
Please stop reading now if you're the type who "can't stand generalizations". Us larger-picture people scoff at you. Logic and America have given me this gift: I no longer believe in God, in romantic love, altruism, or the triumph of the human spirit. In fact, I believe that the very concept of Hope is farcical and delusional to say the least, and that nearly all among us proudest monkeys are in

Thursday Thirteen Edition #7 - Ways I Keep my Sanity
What a week. Sorry I think my last post was a bit confusing, especially if you are new here. I did not actually find a publisher, though if you know of any, I have just found the strength to write it. I've realized that no matter what you do someone will be hurt and that it is most important that you look out for yourself. Not that you should go out of your way to hurt others or not take their

      Sanity Check
Some days I can't help but ask myself WHY. Why do I do such a job as the one I've chosen? The rule of thirds probably applies to cases I see. A third are an absolute joy to be a part of, a third are neither here nor there, and a third turn out to be an enormous drain of energy and total waste of time. Much time and energy has been used identifying and weeding out people from the latter group. I do learn from them and find it important to remain as objective as possible because often that person who presents as what seems to be a hopeless case turns out to be that person who finally gets it together and turns their life around. When that happens I realize once again the answer to my question. Hope. There is always hope.    The sooner the individual gets this crucial point the more salvageable they seem to be. It is an indescribable feeling to see little Johnny for follow up and learn that he has stopped disrupting the class, is now able to focus on

Finally Some Sanity In The Rex Grossman Discussion
From Can't Stop The Bleeding: The following is not parody. This is an actual transcript. from Rush Limbaugh's website: "and before we go to the break here, folks, I gotta get something off my chest. You know, the game was the game, and the game was what it was, but I can't handle any more press criticism of Rex Grossman. They're writing his name "W-r-e-c-k-s," saying he was the worst quarterback

      I Choose Sanity
For a long, dark eight years I have struggled, to some degree, with clinical depression. During that time I have taken five different antidepressants in an effort to maintain the way "normal" people do. With each prescription I only hoped to wake up in the morning knowing I would recognize the person in the mirror, to spend the day without wondering why on earth I exist, to go through each day
