Maid-Rites (Loose Meat Sandwiches from the Midwest)
A few years ago, when we were living in Tennessee, my father came to visit and while out to eat he asked the waitress if they had anything on the menu like a 'loose meat sandwich'. I was pretty mortified because that sounds... well, gross. What played out was almost like a shtick of "Who's On First?".I knew what he meant. She didn't.He continued, "You know... ahhh, a loose meat sandwich, a Maid-Rite sandwich.""Made right?""Yeah... Maid-Rite. You know... loose meat on a bun.""You mean bbq beef?""No... more like a sloppy joe without the sauce.""Sloppy Joe?"He gave up. I think he ordered a burger. LOL.In the state of Iowa (and maybe a couple more sprinkled in the surrounding states) you'll find a 'loose meat' sandwich called a Maid-Rite. It's a restaurant with a red and white classic s

I am a creature of habit, although the word “creature” implies a certain wildness or a snarling wantonness of the spirit which really doesn’t capture the essence of who I am. I’m really more of “blobby find an osmotic balance with my environment” sort of guy; like an amoeba. OK then, I am an amoeba of habit which is why at 5:45 am every morning the alarm on my cell phone goes off across the room and I struggle to roll out of the deeply formed impression in the mattress that just happens to be the exact shape of my body at rest; a free falling skydiver achieving the terminal velocity of sleep, the ripcord malfunctions nightly and I plummet towards consciousness but not before I deeply embed myself into the mattress’s surface. The phone tweets its digital song from its perch on Kathleen’s dresser for only a few seconds before I reach it and strangle it until it is silent. Sandwiches - Are they good for losing weight?
When talking about health and fitness we also need to talk about diets. When talking about diets we also need to talk about sandwiches. This is because they are by far the most loved meal of dieters as it can seem perfect when compared to a steak or hamburger. The question we need to ask ourselves is whether a sandwich is actually helping us in losing calories or it is not doing much to help. You need to realize that the sandwich might not be as healthy as you think and might not aid in your bodybuilding or fitness diet.First of all, white bread is not a good option. Meats added to your sandwich can match up with hamburgers and fries and we also have a lot of cheese added to the mix in most cases. In fact, people usually put so much cheese that just this ingredient makes up for around half of the amount of calories needed daily. A sandwich is usually just a complete meal put between bread slices and you need to know that in most cases we are dealing with twice the serving size that is

      Crock Pot French Dip Sandwiches
Yes, you read that right.  I finally sucked it up and bought a crock pot.  Barbara and her wonderful crock pot recipes finally sold me.  I was obviously missing out.  Paul was not so convinced, that is, until he had his dinner last night!  Wow! I was able to get some rib-eye steaks on sale for next to nothing the other day, but didn't quite know what to do with them.  Rib-eye is divine when roasted and sliced, but the steaks can be tough as they can't be cooked long enough to melt all the fat... or can they? Enter crock pot.  I love a French Dip sandwich with that little pot of jus  (hehe... I always love how they say French Dip Sandwich with au jus on menus, slight bit redundant maybe???) with the caramelized onions draped over succulent tender steak adorning a crusty buttery roll. So I thought I could try a crock pot version. Paul was even dubious when he saw it on his plate, but he tried it and didn't speak an entire word until his plate wa

If you have left over some cold roast meat, you can make some very delicious sandwiches. Cut the meat with sharp knife in tiny slices. Then cut some bread slices with the same shape as the meat slices. Spread some butter on the bread slices and then put the meat above. Be sure that the meat covers the whole slice of bread. You can decorate with cucumbers or olives.

Petit Paris: Best Sandwiches In Fairfield
The Fairfield lunch scene on and around the square is pretty good, but lacking in the sandwich department. I love a good sandwich and so Petit Paris’ new menu has been a welcome addition to my lunchtime routine. You can get them on artisan breads with Kettle chips (yum yum crunch crunch) - all that is missing is a lunch box. My favorites are the “Le Petit Paris” - swiss, hard boiled egg, tomato, lettuce, avocado, mayo and mustard. And the “Smoked Salmon” - smoked salmon, butter, swiss, lettuce and tomato. They are a little on the spendy side for a sandwich ($7), but they pretty much have no competition so I can’t complain (and go somewhere else). If you order the Smoked Salmon sandwich I suggest having them add capers (no smoked salmon should be served without capers).

No trip to Pune is complete without a visit to Marzorin. It is situated on Main Street in Camp in a tiny little shop three steps above everyone else. Back in the 80s when I used to frequent Marzorin, they had a very short menu. 4 types of sandwiches. 5 types of drinks and a few pastries here and there. Today, Marzorin is a huge 2 story restaurant with a fairly complex menu. My favourite food at Marzorin is still by far the little triangular chicken sandwich. I have tried every possible combination of chicken, spreads and bread to make it taste like the Marzorin. I have come up with many recipes in the process, but the Marzorin combination still eludes me. Crockpot Barbecued Beef Sandwiches
At this time of year, I often make barbecued, shredded (or “pulled”) beef in the crock pot to serve on buns. Aside from the fact that it tastes good and fits well with barbecue-y occasions like Memorial Day, Fourth of July and summer potlucks, I like crock-pot pulled beef because round steak is cheap and I can cook for a crowd without blowing our food budget for the week. Also, using the crock-pot lets you go outside and play while the food cooks, and doesn’t heat up your house when its already feeling like Calcutta in August. (Actually, I have never been in Calcutta at any time of the year, but I have a vivid imagination). I have made this many times before, using a bottle of barbecue sauce and a large, hunk of red meat from which I divest the greatest possible amount of fat before cooking. I have used both top round, round steak, and various other tough, inexpensive cuts of meat for this. Sometimes, I make the barbecue sauce from scratch using the same recipe I

      Kind Words And Nostalgia Sandwiches
Kind words from Sir Alex? Must be another of those parallel universe mornings. Widely reported everywhere that he thinks we will be more dangerous post-Henry than before. A bit of reverse psychology there from the Scot to counteract the derisory comments by Drogba, as well as a smattering of truth in his opinion. Having experienced more or less the same scenario last season with the sale of van Nistelrooy to Madrid, and the subsequent writing off of United’s chances, he will be well aware that history could repeat itself. It is an interesting comparison because a look at the frontline that everyone expected United to have - Saha and Rooney - was not their ‘danger’ point; it was Ronaldo who stepped into fill the breach left by the Dutchman and in the case of Arsenal, we are already looking at van Persie to do the same. The key thing though for Arsenal is the midfield chipping in with their share. As well as having one forward score in excess of twenty this season, the

      Wednesday 27th September: Fruit Sandwiches
dgymApart from the beginning of the day our route has flattened out a little. There were even some stages where we made some progress. Tonight we finally found an open campsite and even had a decent meal. We met a lovely Yorkshire couple also camping here and joined them for dinner. No one seemed particulary impressed with Spain as a touring country but we are now looking forward to Portugal even more and we know one good campsite and restaurant to go to, which is great as they are just as we come in. Another week and we will be there.helLast night we had fruit sandwiches for dinner. The restaurant that had been open in Soncillo when we arrived, had closed by 7pm. The owners of the shop over the road sent us down the road to a restaurant that was supposedly 1km away. At 500m away, there was no sign of it (and the next day when we headed further down that way there was still no sign of it) so we went back into town, by which time most of the shops had closed and we were only able to buy

      Frescata (sandwiches from Wendy's)
Once again I love the play on words to bring about a 'new' and exciting sandwich menu to a dying heavily calorie and fat laden menu, in my opinion that is.Just out of my own curiousity I could not get a translation from frescata from Italian, Spanish, French, or Portuguese. So I broke it down and tried again with Fresca (which literally means fresh in all these languages except French). Then I went with ta and got: your in French (which wouldn't work considering fresca meant nothing), ta meant nothing in Spanish (so that doesn't work), you in Italian, it to you in Portuguese. So now lets see what we get...if we compromise between Italian and Portuguese we can get a phrase that says, 'fresh to you'. Which would work with the rest of the statement, New Frescata Deli Sandwiches.Once again it is now up to you to investigate to see whether it is worth the 'hype' or the Italian/Portuguese interpretation.New food marketing techniques drive me nuts...can you tell!!!
