It is just a matter of time. There were no broken bones. It was more discomfort and a really, really deep contusion. That was a nasty fall. I didn’t really see it. I was blocked out when he fell, so I didn’t realize how bad it was until after the game. He didn’t come down directly on the tailbone, it was more to the side. It was a really nasty fall. We’re not practicing today, but he couldn’t practice today if we were. Sampson talks Gordon, Stemler and Southern Illinois
Kelvin Sampson addressed the media Thursday afternoon and here are a few highlights of what he had to say, courtesy of IU Media Relations: On Eric Gordon’s play in comparison to other freshmen he has coached: “I’ve never had a freshman as good as Eric. I’m not sure if I’ve ever had a senior as good as he is either. He is just a prolific scorer. Eric has got to get a lot better in a lot of other areas. His scoring right now is what he is known for, but transition defense, help defense, being more vocal, communicating more. There is not one area of the game defensively that he can’t get better in. Those are the areas we’re going to continually develop and push our team in along with Eric. I want him to communicate in transition. Like the other night in transition defense, if two guys are guarding one in transition it is usually a communication problem, and those things can be corrected.” On Lance Stemler’s performance against Georgia

When you look at the kids we will have returning, DeAndre Thomas, Eli Holman, Brandon McGee, Jordan Crawford, Armon Bassett, Jamarcus Ellis and when you add this class to them, we think we have a chance to remain a contender to play at the top of this league and play for Big Ten championships. That is our goal. On Matt Roth: “What I liked about Matt Roth from the first time I saw him was his ability to make contested three’s. A lot of guys can make three’s when they have time to set their feet, but he makes a lot of contested three’s. He has a great moxy about him and a swagger on the court. Sampson reacts to win over North Alabama
Kelvin Sampson’s postgame comments on the Big Ten Network: “I thought as the game went along, we defended better. The first time you walk out, we had an unbelievable crowd here today, I think the first half we were a little worried about doing this and doing that instead of just competing and defending. Second half we defended better. Almost on every one of our baskets, it led from a pass. That tells you that your kids are being unselfish. The more we play together, the better we’re going to be. The first game is, you know we’ll break the film down, edit it and learn from our mistakes and just keep getting better.” “Second half I thought was outstanding. First half I think it was due to jitters and nervousness. People forget we have four freshman who are playing for their first time ever. I don’t care how good you are, a freshman’s a freshman. It’s not exactly surprising, but it doesn’t make it any less annoying: Kelvin Sampson refused to address the issue of sanctions today at his press conference. From the Herald-Times’ blog, the Hoosier Scoop: Sampson had an opening statement and said that he wouldn’t discuss the violations because the review by the NCAA is pending. He was then asked if the news has been a distraction. He said it has not been. He told the team Sunday what was happening. Since then, they have only been practicing and concentrating on getting better. “My responsibility is to coach this team,” he said. I then asked why he was able to discuss the violations on Sunday but not today and he said that we were getting off topic. Sorry Kelvin, but your responsibility is to run a program whose fans, whether rightfully or wrongfully, have very high-minded moral standards for their competitive athletes, and your responsibility is to run a program that complies with standard and enforced NCAA sa

Even injuries.” On keeping his team focused: “I addressed the team about it early, before it was reported, and explained to them what is happening. Unraveling the latest Sampson debacle
First, a preface: I like Kelvin Sampson at the helm for IU. I think he is a good, smart coach who’s been around long enough — he’s heading into his 25th year of coaching — to know the ins, the outs, the ups and the downs of basketball at the collegiate level. That being said, there were two major qualms when Rick Greenspan announced he’d be taking over the head coaching position. The first being: could this guy actually step into a “big-time” program and succeed? I mean, who the heck was this Kelvin Sampson guy, anyways? I think the answer to that is a decisive “yes” at the moment. Yeah, we have a small sample size to go on, but so far so good, right? Second, and perhaps of equal importance for some IU fans: people were worried about the sanctions, the impermissible phone calls and whether or not Kelvin Sampson would waltz in here and strip away our supposed high ethics and clean program some out there are very proud of.
