Salmonella has been a wake up call for many people. The debate between the Tomato growers and FDA has become a back and forth battle that continues to arise. One reason this is happening is not long ago we had a break out of E. Coli in Spinach. The profits of Spinach declined to a new low as more and more customers decided to stop eating spinach. Tomato growers are feeling this might repeat and wi
WASHINGTON - As salmonella cases continue to climb, the government is checking if tainted tomatoes really are to blame for the record outbreak — or if the problem is with another ingredient, or a warehouse that is contaminating newly harvested tomatoes. The widening outbreak — with 810 people confirmed ill — means whatever is making people sick could very well still be on the market, federal

Yep, that's what was wrong with the dogs, a nasty case of salmonella poisoning. I'm 99% sure it was the bag of dog food we were using, but we'll never know for certain. Anyway, the lab reports came back (did it take long enough?) and that's what the problem was. We're very lucky none of them died.Tomorrow morning at 9am is our closing on the house, and I have to stick around and wait for the freight company to deliver our appliances. How was that for timing? Our bedroom and living furniture are being delivered Friday, 2 different companies so again I'll be stuck waiting, but at least on Friday I can clean, do laundry, let the dogs run around, etc. Over the weekend Jim and I will move the Featherlite and RV over, so it will be Monday at the earliest before I write a new blog entry, bu

A study done at the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands shows that oregano oil is a very effective inhibitor of bacteria. Bacteria like salmonella and E.coli are killed by adding the oil to chicken fillets for example.
Researcher Sara Burt discovered the active component carvacrol which has a detrimental effect on such bacteria which can cause severe food poisoning. Carvacrol can be added to other articles of food in the form of vapor.
Carvacrol vapor reduces the amount of salmonella bacteria on a chicken fillet drastically at 4C, is one of the conclusions of the research.

I very much enjoyed my recent two days off of work. I didn’t get any housework done other than a bit of laundry, but I got to go shopping and exploring, something I may have enjoyed a bit too much because today I’m tired and cranky and really resent having to go back to work.
Enough complaining! I hear ya. Things are moving forward on the house; the listing has been removed from realtor websites and the inspection is scheduled for next week - hopefully everything will go well with that. I’ve uploaded 99 pics of the house to my Flickr in a set you can view here. I’ve been too busy to label them, sorry.
Last night was fun - the three of us cuddling, talking, wrestling, tickling each other on the bed, the dog in the middle of everyone, demanding to be center of attention and biting everyone’s feet. It’s just so NICE when everyone gets along!

The Mars Petcare pet food has temporarily closed their pet food plant in Everson, PA where the FDA found salmonella in two brands of dog food.
Mars Petcare has temporarily closed its pet food production plant in Everson to conduct an inspection and for cleaning after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found salmonella in two brands of dry dog food made there, the company said.
Five-pound bags of Krasdale Gravy dry dog food sold in Pennsylvania and four other states, and 50-pound bags of Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula dry dog food sold in two stores in Pennsylvania were recalled last week after the FDA detected salmonella in samples.
The FDA said the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention received 64 reports of people across the country being infected with salmonella Scharzengrund, the same strain found in the recalled dog food.
The state Department of Health reported that 25 people in the state contracted the same infection since January 2006.

Robert's Gourmet expanded the recall that we talked about to include their Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks product. I guess unsurprisingly, this correlates all the way back to the Chinese-- and our post about Chinese food safety. And so while, I've basically accepted that the Chinese could care less about food safety, it was disconcerting to hear Robert Ehrlich, president and CEO of
The latest in what seems to be a growing number of food recalls involves a snack food called Super Veggie Tings Crunchy Corn Sticks. This follows on the heels of last week's recall of Veggie Booty Snack Food. These recalls are apparently due to an ingredient used in both products that is suspected of being contaminated. In 17 states, over 50 people have contacted salmonella from eating the affected snacks.Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea and vomitting. It can be especially problematic, even fatal, among people with poor immune function, the elderly or small children. The manufacturer, Robert's American Gourmet, is recommending that consumers who have either of these foods in their homes throw them out immediately. Reimbursement is available by calling 1-800-626-7557.
According to API, the FDA is investigating a Texas laboratory’s finding of acetaminophen in dog and cat food. Horrifyingly, this is the fifth contaminant found in pet foods during the past 2 1/2 months. Acetaminophen can be toxic or lethal to pets. At least five dog and cat food samples submitted by worried pet owners and pet food manufacturers contained varying levels of the pain reliever.
The contaminants were found in foods that are still being sold and have not been recalled. According to the news source I read, these dog food companies were given this information over a month ago, but have not yet issued recalls. This goes to show that dog food still being sold in the stores may be contaminated and may be lethal to your dog.
In another story I read, Doane Pet Care Co. is recalling a batch of food it sent to stores in Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and Ohio, due to salmonella contamination.

Nearly 300 people in 39 states have fallen ill since August 2006, linked to a Salmonella outbreak from peanut butter. It is believed to be the first Salmonella outbreak in U.S. history associated with peanut butter.
