Versos Satânicos é o nome do romance do Indiano Salman Bushdie.
The author of The Satanic Verses is seen nuzzling Scarlett Johansson’s neck and whispering in her ear, to her evident delight. Rushdie appears in Johansson's music video for Falling Down Quite how the 60-year-old Sir Salman came to be involved in the musical career of movie starlet Miss Johansson, 23, remains a mystery. The four-minute video is for Falling Down ,the new single from Miss Johansson’s forthcoming debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head. The star of Lost In Translation and The Other Boleyn Girl has turned her hand to singing, and the album features covers of tracks by Tom Waits. David Bowie performs backing vocals. Reaction has been mixed, with some critics suggesting she stick to the day job. The video is conceived as a day in the life of the
In a battle between flaming fundamentalists and mute moderates, who do you think is going to win? GUEST POST by Irshad Manji. (Times Online)Growing up in Vancouver, I attended an Islamic school every Saturday. There, I learned that Jews cannot be trusted because they worship “moolah, not Allah,” meaning money, not God. According to my teacher, every last Jew is consumed with business. But looking around my neighbourhood, I noticed that most of the new business signs featured Asian languages: Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Punjabi and plenty of Urdu. Not Hebrew. Urdu, which is spoken throughout Pakistan. That reality check made me ask: What if my religious school is not educating me? What if it is indoctrinating me? I am reminded of this question thanks to the news that Salman Rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses and ten other works of fiction, will be knighted by the Queen of England. On Monday, Pakistan’s religious affairs minister said that in light of how Rushd
Since it’s another day in Islam that means another day of Jihad. This time Salman Rushdie is back in the spotlightRushdie is best known for his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses, and the fact that his wife is seriously hot:I must admit I have never read much Rushdie--tried, but got profoundly bored. But nonetheless, I am a fan. Heck, I’m a fan of anyone the mullahs put under jihad watch.Apparently The Satanic Verses contained some passages that were not flattering to The Prophet. And this caused The Ayatollah Khomeini , the flaming lunatic that started the Iranian Islamic Revolution, to issue a fatwa. After the guy who translated the book was stabbed to death, Rushdie apologized for offending the Religion of Peace, and went into hiding for nine years. In 1999 the president of Iran, Mohammad Khatmi, made an off handed comment that the fatwa was finished. This inspired Rushdie to come out of hiding. But since then rumblings from the Revolutionary Guard have indicated that the whole "aposta
Unfortunately, Islamofascists worldwide don't think so. Worse, they're using this now as a justification for suicide bombings, and worse: Britain's decision to award Salman Rushdie a knighthood set off a storm of protest in the Islamic world today, with a Pakistani government minister giving warning that it could provide justification for suicide bomb attacks.Rushdie was awarded the title in the Queen's Birthday Honours on Saturday. He has lived under police protection since the late Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini of Iran pronounced a fatwa (death sentence) on him over alleged blasphemies against Islam in his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses.Today, Pakistan's religious affairs minister suggested that the knighthood was so grave an offence that any Muslim anywhere in the world would be justified in taking violent action."If somebody has to attack by strapping bombs to his body to protect the honour of the Prophet then it is justified," Mr ul-Haq told the National Assembly.I hope the Brit
India-born author Salman Rushdie, whose novel 'The Satanic Verses' earned the ire of the clergy in Iran, has been knighted. The author, along with England's legendary cricketer Ian Botham, will be knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours. Rushdie was forced into hiding for a decade after Iran's spiritual leader ordered his assassination following the publication of Satanic Verses. Rushdie is one of the prominent and often one of the most controversial novelists of the late 20th century. Besides the Booker Prize for Midnight's Children in 1981, he won the ''Booker of Booker'', a special award honouring the best novel in the 25-year history of the prize in 1993. The inclusion of Botham comes after he was previously denied the honour for being suspended for smoking marijuana on a cricket tour to the West Indies in 1986.His fourth novel, The Satanic Verses (1988), provoked violent reactions from radical muslims. After death threats and a fetwa issued by Ayatollah Khomeini, callin
Joyce Carol Oates has an impressive resume: Princeton University Professor, prolific author, winner of numerous awards including being short listed for the Nobel Prize. I have read a bunch of her stories in the past usually taking an extended break because they tend to be so dark I can get berried in the story. Recently her reputation has taken on a more notorious side when she based a story off of the local murder of a college student. It isn't uncommon for writers to draw off of news events or another persons life story. Truth is stranger than fiction and life can have a stronger dramatic impact than anything a person can make up. Joyce capitalized on that fact by writing a particularly harsh story based on recent events surrounding the death of a local college student. The story is well written and can be used as a cautionary tale warning of the dangers of binge drinking on college campuses. What many people will find disturbing is how you are never left with a clear resolut
