Many thanks to everybody who came to the opening reception of my solo show at the North Salem Library! I tried to snap a few pictures of some of the paintings before things got busy. Following on from yesterday, in the next three days we will be presenting the transcript evidence of Ms Salem, the only independent witness in the case of Child M. This evidence was ignored in total by the panel in favour of the mother of Child M. I of course don't believe the mother of Child M. I do though believe Ms Salem. She has nothing to gain within these proceedings unlike the mother of Child M. The GMC decision in Southall is a destruction to the important subject of Child Protection. This basically means that potential child abusers who are suspected by the social services can go to the General Medical Council and will be believed without question. Instead of believing the independent witness ie the social worker or anyone else present in a consultation, they will believe the potential child abuser. A huge double rainbow over the lake followed a late summer shower a couple of months ago. The sky glowed everywhere. The rainbow was to the east, and this amazing sunset was the south view that evening. It’s times like this when I consider myself so fortunate to live by the lake. I can run out at a moment’s notice to capture spectacular conditions when they appear! I couldn’t resist “pushing” the color in this painting. It was so vividly colorful in my memory. Sometimes I just need to let loose and allow the color junkie in me to emerge. Sunsets present the perfect opportunity for that! After a few placement lines, I blocked in my midtones and darks: Next, I added Ultramarine Blue for the coolest darks, and Hansa Yellow Light for the lightest areas. Then I laid in my sky, using Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and a touch of Phthalo Blue to bring the sky back to a mid-blue and give it a little chroma boost. (I apologize for the glare in this image.) Once the sky is in, I start working local color, allowing my underpainting to show through in places. There seems to be just one thing that Salem, MA is known for, The Salem Witch Trials of 1692, as for you theatre fanatics you may know it better as The Crucible. Oddly, Salem is one of the very few towns on this trip that I have previously been to. But if you think that?s stranger, what gets stranger is that Rebecca Nurse (one of the first ?witches? hanged, and a leading character in The Crucible) is something along the lines of my 8th or 9th great grandmother. I vaguely remember being here when I was maybe 13 or 14 years old to visit my uncle who lives nearby. We visited the Rebecca Nurse homestead and I remember cheesy tourist stores selling anything related to witches. One memory I have (and I?m not joking!) is that on our way out of town I remember we all saw a cloud that was in the shape of the stereotypical witch head, long nose, pointy hat, etc. Scary! I think my first reaction when I listened to the music of Danish band Salem was something like "what on earth is this?", because it didn't really sound like anything I'd normally listen to. Then I took a further look at the band's description of the music and suddenly everything made more sense. According to that, the band writes the music with a never filmed Spaghetti Western in mind and it's the ambition of the band to be featured on the soundtrack of Tarantino movie, which I believe is a very plausible explanation for the sound the band has adopted/created. Lots of bands have ridiculous ambitions, but for once I think that a band has a (more than) fair chance of fulfilling its dream. Because not only are the songs very good (a couple of listens are required, but they really grow on you), but they also create exactly the right atmosphere and illusions in your mind!
