Results from 2008 IT Salary Survey
I work in the technology sector and so it was interesting to see the results of the 2008 US IT salary survey. Overall it looks like the median salaries for business technology professionals fell for the first time in 11 years. From 2007 to 2008, median base pay for IT staff fell to $73,000 from $74,000 and for managers it dropped from $97,000 to $96,000. This was probably due to the general economic slowdown which led to lower corporate spending and increased outsourcing thereby driving down internal labor costs. However, as the overall drops are not significant I don't think you can read too much into the numbers yet. Some other points of note from the survey were:1. There are still some jobs that are seeing an uptick in salary, particularly those with Web design and Enterprise wide type r

Realty, telecom expects highest salary hike in 2008
CHENNAI: If labour markets worked like stock markets , our advice would have been - get out of electronics & automotive and get into real estate & telecom. This is the essence of a survey conducted by HR consulting firm Hewitt Associates. The 12th annual India salary increase survey found that sectors such as real estate (infrastructure ), energy, retail, telecommunications and banking saw the highest salary increases across levels last year. The average increase in salaries hovered around 16.4%-19 .0%.Of the above areas, the top honours went to the real estate and infrastructure segment , where salaries rose by at least 25.2%. Further, Hewitt projects that this booming segment, flush with money from the public markets over the last year, will grab the top place this year as well.

      What's Your Salary?
toothpastefordinner.comIt's supposed to be rude to ask someone how much money they make. And most people don't typically share this information. I've heard that people are more comfortable talking about their sex life, past drug use, criminal history, and medical issues than about how much money they make. I think that it has something to do with self-esteem and competition, and the idea that your salary can be perceived by others (and maybe yourself) as a representation of what you're worth. Obviously people don't want to feel less important than anyone else. Or maybe people refuse to acknowlege what they earn to avoid judgement of others who may think that they live beyond their means (especially if the actually do). In direct opposition to this tradition of secrecy, I'd like to share t

      Is your Salary above Average?
I like to keep my eyes on what the average Australian salaries are and how they are trending. Firstly, I use the averages as a comparison to what I am making in the US and secondly to have an idea of what I could earn when I return to Australia. I found a good guide for this at the My Career website. For people already in a job, I think it is always good to know how you compare to the average and how much upside/downside you have at your next pay review or for future jobs. It is also a good starting point for people looking to work in Australia and to get an idea of what they could earn across the various sector and job roles. I have included a graph form the My Career website which shows the Australian salary trend over the last few years. $77,800 is the current average which is an increas

How do I calculate a percentage of increase in my salary or investment?
Photo by: hasmil Hank, I just got a raise at work from $35,000AUD to $42,000AUD - what is that percentage of increase, more so, how do I calculate it? - Gerald from Perth Hey Gerald - good question, people wonder that more than you think. So the way to calculate a percent increase between two numbers: 1. Take the difference between two numbers (this can be a subtracted either way because the number will just be a negative) $42,000 - $35,000 = $7,000 2. Take the difference ($7,000) and divide by the original number: $7,000/$35,000 = 0.20 3. Finally, multiply the number above by 100. (0.20*100 = 20%) You’ve gotten a 20% raise! Which is far better than the standard “cost of living increase” of about 3.1%! Nice job! (Thanks to OnFinancialSuccess for the typo fix resolve.  :) )

Dividend Hikes Twinkling Brighter Than Salary Increases
It’s true. The rumour is resonating well in the office. According to our supervisor during a departmental meeting, management has reserved the necessary budget to increase salaries next year. Word on the street is for an average hike of 5% - not bad considering the Core CPI is resting at 2.2% this quarter. As uplifting as it is, it’s still no match against the slew of dividend increases ringing under our Christmas tree: Encana - 100% (100% from last year) Parkland Income Fund - 8.6% (50% from last year) + ~4.7% of special dividend Fortis - 19.0% (31.5% from last year) Reitmans - 12.5% (12.5% from last year) Scotia Bank - 4.4% (11.9% from last year) Pfizer - 10.3% (10.3% from last year) Not only that, most of these increases are tax-free, while about a third of salary increases goes to taxes. There are a number of salary guides available in the market. You can download them free from many sources. For examples are Kelly Service's 2006 Salary Guide, JobsDB 2006 Salary Report and Jobstreet.com. The salary report for Kelly and JobsDB are in PDF format, while Jobstreet has revamped their guide into a web-based application that allows you to find the figures in a few clicks. The figures are based on the real salaries of the job seekers registered with Jobstreet.com and with the growing number of users, most likely the Average Salary you will get is the most accurate you can get compared to other surveys. Salary guides are helpful and will be able to provide you with useful information, especially when you want to know if you're being underpaid or overpaid (being overpaid is good!). But at the risk of offending you, let me tell you that salary guides are for the average job seekers only. Why? Because if your salary expectation falls within the means of the survey, that means

      The Japanese Salary Man
I`d never heard of the term Salary Man prior to coming to Japan, now i hear it and often refer to it all the time, infact i am one. A Salary Man basically describes a Japanese businessman aged between 25 and 50 living a very typical existance of long hours at work, long hours at play. Living in a city like Tokyo i can totally relate to it, Tokyo is driven by routine. Whether it`s catching to train, working or socialising, everything is planned and executed by intervals of 1 minute. As a lover of routine it`s great, although even for me i sometimes find it frustrating to be driven by such a time managed life. I kid you not, when i say, i see the same people day in day out on the train, at the station, in the same seat on the bus, the list goes on. I don`t think they notice me as much as i notice them, especially the cute girl who catches the 7:15 and looks better in a skirt or dress than she does jeans, but i digress. My schedule is repeated day in day out with nothing spont

There is no buyout. There never needed to be one.Any buyout clause will be written into the next contract, after Golden gets the job done here. That's where the "this university has made a commitment to me and my commitment to them is that I will build a house of brick, not straw" comment came from. The Salary Dump Continues: Monroe Gone
Yahoo: MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Outfielder Craig Monroe was acquired by the Minnesota Twins from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday for a player to be named later. The 30-year-old hit .219 with 12 homers and 59 RBIs this year from the Tigers and the Cubs, who obtained him Aug. 23 after Detroit designated him for assignment. Minnesota has been seeking outfield help, a need that may grow if free-agent center fielder Torii Hunter signs with another team. I'm not sure that Craig Monroe qualifies as outfield "help," but I am happy that someone took him off our hands before we had to non-tender him.  I'm sure the Minnesota fan base will be just as happy with Craig in the OF as they were with Torii. As I see it, we have two possible scenarios: One, we will continue through the off-season with nothing more than these measley little trades and start ST with a team that looks very much like the one we ended the season with, or, two, these salary dumps are a precursor to something bigger. The usual responses I hear from friends are allocate a portion to savings, give some to parents and then indulge in some retail therapy. I guess most of you do this too. For the more adventurous ones, they will set aside some funds for investments like stocks, bonds, property etc. There’s nothing wrong with it too if you can get a high ROI annually. What exactly is lacking? What most people fails to do including top Bloggers are they fail to set aside one small portion to reinvest on themselves. You have to reinvest in yourself ! This is the message I want to bring across today. Human beings are depreciating units. We start to depreciate in value once we stepped out of school. The right ratio, which will allow to employees to feel the stability and attractive bonus, which will motivate them to reach a better performance. The balance can be delivered just by the right ratio between the base salary and bonuses. The issue is more about the relationship between HRM and Line Management. The line manager usually believes in the power of high ratio between the base salary and the bonus. It is easy to understand as the manager believes in easier people management when the ratio is high as employees will be motivated to reach higher performance on their own. In reality, this is not true. When you provide employees with the low base salary and the high bonus, it does not increase their performance automatically. Sure, for some employees it can be seen as a really high motivation, but the rest of the team can be quickly demotivated as they do n

Understanding The Effects Of The New Economy On Our Salary
Hey Folks, In our last post, we mentioned that New Economy was born as a result of Globalization and Outsourcing. Here’s a recap of what a New Economy is in general: Definition of New Economy “The general idea is that a business should focus on those areas of its operation which are critical to its success and where it has a competitive advantage. Other areas of its operation should be outsourced, typically using technology as the facilitator. In a developed economy, the critical success factors to a leading business are likely to be intellectual things such as brands, products specifications and technical capabilities. Many routine business functions (such as manufacturing and customer service desks) may be outsourced.” - Wikipedia On New Economy Salary In The Past In the past (prior to 1990s in US, 2000s in Asia Pacific region, other developed countries somewhere in between), we get pay rise simply because we expect our boss to give one and we did do our job.
