People sometimes get an idealistic idea about how it is to sail a yacht. True, I love sailing. I love the ocean, the freedom, even just the idea of moving on an endless sea merely pushed forward by wind and tides. But when I go sailing with the family, it is different. Up comes the endless feeling of responsibility. In our family of four, I am the only one who knows how to sail a yacht. Tine, my w
Those of you who have been following this blog for a while, know I sail.I always wanted to sail, but never found the incentive to really get started. In 2003, during the Iraq crisis, I was based in Dubai. Work was madness, and we put in very long hours, from 8 am until 11-12 pm every day. We all needed some physical exercise, and discovered several of us were interested in sailing. So we took up Las

Registration and the first night of camp went surprisingly well! Though, I felt like a part-time meteorologist for a good portion of the night as I kept running to and from my office looking at the radar and trying to determine what the best plan of action was for the rest of the night. We were under a severe thunder storm warning but, I kid you not, both systems split in half about 15 miles

The British Virgin Islands: Sailor's Paradiseby Barry MonteiroWith deep channels and harbors between inviting green islands and sandy cays, the British Virgin Islands are among the finest sailing areas in the world. This makes it an ideal vacation spot for anyone who loves the ocean, and especially anyone who loves boats and boating. The geography of the BVI's is remarkable. The weather throughout the islands is very stable, varying only a little with the seasons. The wind is perfect for sailing and other water sports, a Caribbean trade wind of ten to twenty-five knots or just a little more from December through February. Partly because of this stable weather, the temperature of the water is almost always swimmable, hovering within five degrees of 80 all year. Because the islands are so tig

Hawaii dinner cruises are offered on a wide variety of sailing vessels, from state-of-the-art, multi-deck cruisers and large, engine-powered catamarans, to more intimate sailboats and sail-powered catamarans. Some offer a view of the ocean floor, coral reefs, colorful tropical fish and other underwater creatures through glass bottom viewing areas—equally spectacular during the day and when lighted during nighttime hours. Each vessel offers its own unique perspective to cater to every type of sea-going sightseer. A Hawaii dinner cruise normally ranges from 2 to 4 hours, with check-in at the harbor scheduled slightly before sail time; however, all-day cruises including opportunities to snorkel, swim and explore island beaches, culminating in an evening meal and glorious sunset finale are a
I hauled the mainsheet in tight and the starboard runner lifted off the ice. I tugged it in a little more and the iceboat took off like a shot, chattering across the rough ice at about 30 miles per hour. From my steering position a few inches above the surface---flat on my back and staring over my insulated boots---it felt more like 130 m.p.h.Several tacks across the lake and I maneuvered the waterbug-like contraption back to shore where the boat's owner stood grinning, anticipating my reaction. Spinning the iceboat around into the wind, I rolled out while Wes set the brake, a toggle-like device on the front runner that digs into the ice. "Man, oh man, what a ride! That was fantastic!" I said, or something to that effect. My friend Wes (in the photo) is one of a group of avid iceboaters in
Sailing: An Ideal Sport For FamiliesBy: Gray Rollins For many years, the stereotype persisted that sailing was primarily the province of young, hearty men with large, tattooed biceps. However, in recent years, the demographic of who enjoys sailing has become much more diverse. Sailing is becoming an increasingly popular recreational activity for families, and with good reason. On a sailboat that requires someone steering at the helm, someone navigating from a map, and even someone swabbing the deck, there is a lot to be done, so there can be a role for everyone from grandpa down to the smallest tot. Sailing as a family encourages the kind of lighthearted cooperation and communication that can help any clan of kin grow closer while having a lot of fun.Spending an afternoon on the water is a

Sailing (U.S.) International Corp in conjunction with The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of their Flashing Pacifiers and there is a risk of choking. Consumers have been asked to stop using the product immediately. The reason why 8,000 of the flashing pacifiers have been recalled is the fact that the nipple can become detached from its base; this can cause a choking hazard for young children. As of yet there are no reports on any injury, and as you would expect has been manufactured in China.

Hybrid marine power combines abundant, natural sun and wind energy with conventional engines. It was December 2002, and I had fallen in love with tall ship sailing just 2 years before.
It was a lifestyle I never dreamed possible for myself. As I wandered the Halifax waterfront during Tall Ships 2000, I came across a ship that particularly caught my eye. Her name, Eye of the Wind. As I watched people climbing aloft, doing various tasks and maintenance, I wondered, what kind of person do you have to be to find yourself working a job like that? Surely you must have spent your childhood messing around in small boats, learning important techniques and seamanship and teamwork. And you must be strong.

The Chilean raining ship, Esmeralda -- and her four massive sailing masts -- arrived in the islands on the tail-end of the ship's goodwill mission around the pacific rim. The majestic ship entered the harbor under an island sun, ready to hit its stride. In an impressive display, 52 sailors lined the foremast, to honor the host port. This is just a taste of long-standing, Chilean naval tradition.

Well, anyone who saw the America’s Cup winning race in June will tell you there is plenty excitement on the water these days. I had missed most of the America’s Cup but tuned in for the final 5 minutes of it. So this is my third entry for my “Blown Away” project. I picked this one as my final entry because it has a strong overexposure in the Sun’s reflection off the water.
The photo was taken on the beach at Santa Monica while I was at one of Trevor Carpenter’s photowalks. I took this photo because I liked the simplicity of the small boats on the open water. It also turned out that the harsh reflection of the sun caused a severe overexposure. I wasn’t planning on doing much with this one due to the blown out highlights, but it ended up being a good candidate for my project.
The JPEG (1) of this photo was really washed out and lifeless, but the processed RAW file (2) made for a good starting point. Before applying any adjustments, I made a copy of the processed RAW layer and applied a Hard Mix Layer Blend (3) at 30% opacity and 30% fill. Then I touched things up a bit with a Curves Adjustment (4) to give a little more contrast. The last step in my proces

3 school days under my belt and things are still going smoothly. Thank heavens! I'm probably going to need to look back on this first week for encouragement. The "new" feeling will wear off soon and I can only hope, our routine is in place and we are still getting things accomplished by that time. I've been in this race long enough to know that one day can be wonderful and exciting, while the next day makes you feel like a dismal failure. I'm shooting for more of the wonderful exciting days this year!
I have to say, that I'm glad I make the switch back to Abeka for Sis. That's just the curriculum she works best in. The only thing that I'm regretting about Spud's curriculum is the math. This past weekend I worked on a traditional wooden schooner (pictured above) sailing along the east coast of Nova Scotia up to Cape Breton. Continually being exposed to the world of sailing has made me realize the opportunity which boating has for the independent traveler.Have you every thought of owning your own sail boat? These are some of the many reasons why owning and traveling in your own sail boat can be so appealing to the independent traveler.
1. You really are completely independent and free to travel at will
Unlike other forms of transportation, sailing enables you to pick up and drop anchor where ever you like. On a moments notice you can travel almost anywhere in the world. The only thing stopping you is not the cost of travel (as it costs the same traveling as staying at anchor), but your ambition to take on another challenge.
2. Sailing can be very cheap
If you live aboard your boat, you can get away without paying any housing costs. Many sailors will come to shore

At a firm I work for we had a Sports day the other day. Above all it's a team-building thing and we do it two or three times a year.
In Winter we usually go skiing and in the Summer there are many options. This time we went sailing for a day.
Our day together started in Izola, Slovenia, where for starters we listened to some sailing theory. Soon after that we went on board.

I was in Brindisi a couple of weeks ago, just as the Brindisi-Corfu Regatta started. WFP entered with a boat in the race, raising money for the humanitarian cause. The boat was a MAXI80, same type they use in the America's Cup. They ending 4th in the Regatta and they raised over US$250,000.I thought "Hmmm, imagine if we'd do the same in a Transatlantic Race, maybe we could raise more money and visibility..."The owner of the MAXI80 was receptive to the idea, so at this moment, we're trying to put all pieces of the puzzle together. How to get the boat to the Canary Islands, for the start of the ARC2007 - the same transatlantic regatta I participated in last year (see these posts), how to get 10 professional crew working with 10 WFP staff totalling a crew of 20 on the boat... How do we find sufficient sponsors. How can we get the boat back to Europe? Minor stuff. Will be exciting...
I am on holiday, home in Belgium at the moment. We are soon off for our annual holiday, this time to St.Martin in the Caribbean where we are chartering a boat to sail around for almost a month. This week I needed to practice some of the skills I need to skipper a boat..Unfortunately when we set out for our practice course in Nieuwpoort on the Belgian coast, the weather did not cooperate. Wind, rain, hail, lightning and thunder, we had it all!! Look at the picture, how Lana and Hannah were dressed. You would not say it was summer, right? The good thing was, for one hour, in the afternoon, the skies opened up, and the beauty of sailing comes out in its best.. I love the Belgian coast. (tried to capture it in this short story)

Recent years there has been an increasing number of fishing tourists coming here from Germany, Finland and Sweden. Hope they do not catch all my fish

Sailing in Florida is a miniature, ACEO size painting, done from a photo. When my husband saw the painting, he said he could imagine it framed on his desk for a mental vacation from time to time!
I have such a great time painting occasional ACEO size works. ACEO stands for Artist Cards Editions and Originals. They are collectible paintings in a standard, miniature format. The size is 2.5×3.5″, like baseball cards and playing cards. They are so enjoyable to paint and collect that every so often I do a few of them. Some artists sell prints of paintings in that size as ACEOs, but mine are always one-of-a-kind originals. ACEOs are truly fun to collect for those who love art. Everybody can find a place for these little gems. It’s an easy way to collect work from some favorite artists.

Christopher Cross - “Sailing”
It’s not far down to paradise
At least it’s not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away
And find tranquility
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
It’s not far to never never land
No reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy
Of innocence again
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing
Takes me away
To where I’ve always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Fantasy
It gets the best of me
When I’m sailing
All caught up in the reverie
Every word is a symphony
Won’t you believe me
It’s not far back to sanity
At least it’s not for me
And when the wind is right you can sail away
And find serenity
The canvas can do miracles
Just you wait and see
Believe me
Sailing at Sunset6 x 6", Oils on sealed, primed hardboard$100 unframed via PayPal, free shipping within US (email me for international rates)When we were in Maine last summer, we went for a sunset sail on the four-masted schooner Margaret Todd. We lucked out with a spectacular sunset. I took oodles of photos, including the one of this boat sailing nearby. Every time he tacked, the light would catch the sails from a different direction. I was so glad to have my camera along!I got up extra early to finish the painting this morning. I'm going to be offline for a few days after this post, but I'll see y'all back here on Tuesday.
Sailing by Porcupine Island5 x 7", Acrylic on Arches hot press 100% rag paper$49.99 unframed via PayPal, free shipping within US (email me for international rates)This past summer, our hotel room in Bar Harbor faced the Porcupine Islands. We'd watch the boats sailing in and out of the harbor. This painting was done from one of the photos I took there. The painting itself is 3x4.5". It is mounted to a backing board and beautifully double-matted to 5x7", so it is ready to pop into your favorite standard 5x7 frame.
Chartering Checklist
Some handy things to take with you:
Foul weather jacket and trousers. Do not assume these are supplied. Some companies may hire these to you.
Deck shoes or non-slip, non-marking trainers. If you are sailing in cooler/wetter climates then yachting wellies will make a huge difference to your happiness and safety.
Handheld GPS if you have one. Virtually all charter yachts will have a fixed GPS, but a backup is handy if the electrics go down and can be used in the cockpit if there is no repeater. Spare batteries.
Personal logbook so you have a record of your cruise.
Mobile phone. This is useful to check about berth availability, book a restaurant table or for a quick chat with the charter company if there is something you don't understand.
High-factor sun cream
Yacht Handover Checklist
The yacht handover will usually take about an hour and is important so you are familiar with the vessel before putting to sea. At least two of you should be shown the following:
The location and safe operation of all the safety equipment including:
liferaft
fire extinguisher
lifejackets
safety harnesses
flares
torches
EPIRB
Handheld VHF
first aid kit
bolt cutters
emergency tiller
Operating the following systems:
Cooker
Heating system
Heads
Engine
VHF
Anchors
Location and operation of other items:
Seacocks and emergency bungs
All the instruments, including the GPS
Charts and pilot books
All the halyards, winches, reefing lines and other sail controls
The charter company would prefer you to feel 100% confident before you take
The BVI British Virgin Islands is a group of islands in the Caribbean offering fabulous sailing. Some say it is the best sailing in the world, while others qualify by saying it is the best in the world for novices. I wouldn't like to judge, but it is pretty special.
The area of the BVI is something like 35 miles by 10 miles, or nearer 60 x 15 miles if you also include the US Virgin Islands. The main island of the BVI is Tortola, and the capital is Road Town. All the BVI islands are essentially verdant green trees and mostly undeveloped. Some are completely uninhabited.
The USVI to the west are administratively but not physically separate - the Virgin Islands are one group of islands, so I suppose they must have divvied them up between allegiance to Britain and the yanks a while back.
Yacht chartering is the practice of chartering a sailing or motor yacht and traveling to various coastal or island destinations. This is usually a vacation activity.
You will get to choose from a variety of luxury yachts all fully equipped with 3 plush cabins, 2 luxurious bathrooms and 2 decks. Some also have a complete stereo system so that you can enjoy music whilst onboard and air conditioning to keep you cool. The boats range from holding groups of 6 to 11 people.
Charter Companies that provide yachts for charter usually require guests to demonstrate that they have a qualified skipper and at least one competent crew member. If the guests cannot provide their own skipper (
bare-boat charter), the company can supply one for an additional fee. This is known as a "skippered Charter Boat
luxury yacht sailing catamarans, showing the typical Hobie raised platform joining the two hulls, and tall mast.
Stars & Stripes, a racing crewed catamarans
Although the principles of sailing are the same for both catamarans and monohulls, there are some 'peculiarities' to sailing catamarans. For example:
Catamarans can be harder to tack (turn through the wind). Because they are lighter in proportion to their sail size, they have less momentum to carry them through the turn when they are head to wind. Correct use of the jib sail is often essential in successfully completing a tack without ending up stuck in irons (pointing dead into the wind and sailing backwards).
They have a higher average speed.
All boats sail faster when travelling in certain directions relative to the wind with
I have been away from the sailing community for about 10 years now though it seems like forever. After my children were born we decided to sell the boat and move back into mainstream America. The "white picket fence" life that I had dreaded for so long finally became a reality. I love my children, my husband and my life though I long for the solitude of the sea.I am completely new to blogging and I am not sure about what I am intending to do with this yet. When I first started thinking about the blog, I wanted to recount our adventures and put the story of our travels into print. During my time researching this project I have spent time reviewing a lot of different blogs and forums and I have read a lot of crazy stuff. I have come to realize that I know nothing of the world of sailing in today's day and age. I feel like a complete outsider ~ an armchair sailor even. For 10 years I lived on the sea, I hated the culture shock of coming home to visit relatives yet now I feel lik
