Well, first we have to think about what part of the finger snapping motion causes the sound. Your students might be interested in doing an experiment to observe that it is in fact the impact of your finger on your palm that causes the "snap". The next question, which you alluded to in your message, is how (and why) we hear this impact. Why do claps make a sound, for that matter? I suspect that this is an oversimplification, but one way of explaining it is that when your palms (or finger and palm) come together quickly, the air between them has to get away in a hurry. This causes a pressure wave –where air molecules get scrunched together– that travels outward from the source. Sound is a pressure wave so when it reaches our ears we hear a "snap".

Choco-Mint Snaps Makes about 72 4 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate 4 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/4 cups vegetable shortening 2 cups sugar 2 large eggs 1/3 cup light corn syrup 2 1/2 tablespoons water 2 teaspoons peppermint extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Additional sugar for rolling Melt chocolate squares in the top of a double boiler over simmering water; set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 350 F. In a small bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a large mixing bowl, using an electric mixer at medium speed, cream the shortening and 2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and blend well. Add reserved chocolate, corn syrup, water, and extracts and blend well. Stir in flour mixture until just blended. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in additional sugar and place about 2-inches apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes. Cook the egg-noodles following the packinstructions, drain and set aside. Heat oil and 1 tablespoon sesame oil and fry 3 chopped spring onions  and a chopped garlic clove. When the spring onion is soft add 200g sliced mushrooms, 200g sugarsnaps and 1 tablespoon gingerpowder. Stirfry it for about 4 minutes. Meanwhile make the sauce by mixing the following ingredients: 300ml vegetable stock, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon tomato puree, stir it well and add it to the vegetables. Bring it to the boil and then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 4 minutes. Add the egg-noodles, just heat it a little more and add some sesameseed and the dish is ready. Enjoy!

Rosneft has bought about 600 filling stations that belonged to bankrupt oil firm Yukos for 21.2 billion rubles ($819 million), the company said Tuesday. Rosneft said its 100 percent subsidiary Neft-Aktiv bought Unitex, which has 495 filling stations and a number of product terminals in European and southern Russia, for 16.3 billion rubles. Neft-Aktiv also bought more than 100 retail stations from another lot of the Yukos assets for 4.9 billion rubles. Unitex, a little-known company whose owners have not been disclosed, paid 17.5 billion rubles ($676 million) in auctions that included the assets bought by Rosneft. The purchase of the filling stations would help Rosneft become a leader in the retail market in Russia, Rosneft said. "Having added refining capacity lately, and with our desire to expand the downstream business generally, it's clear that it's a very profitable business and will continue to grow, and the margins are attractive," said Peter O'Brien, Rosneft's finance v

Just days after an amateur car enthusiast snapped one of the best shots of the BMW M3 Sedan at the 'Ring, an Autoblog reader snapped pics of Porsche's 4-door Panamera testing on American soil. Spotted driving on the 405 freeway in Carson, California, this green Panamera mule doesn't reveal anything new. However, the close-up shots of the side can give us more clues on how the real roofline of the car will be. What a great shoot folks! Eagle its beating wings forming an almost perfect square against a background of water spray; this is an American bald eagle in the act of catching a fish. Many a professional wildlife photographer with state-of-the art equipment would have been delighted with such a dramatic picture. In fact it was taken by a tourist with a standard camera hoping for a memorable holiday snap. The lucky man, Dean Bertoncelj, 39, had his close encounter of the bird kind at a nature reserve on Lanzarote in the Canary Isles. The Croatian from Zagreb said: “I lay down on the ground waiting for it to arrive and unbelievably it swooped down right in front me and picked up a fish. A member of a BMW M3 enthusiasts forum, M3Post.com, has snapped a BMW M3 Sedan mule undergoing testing at the Ring and up close. Larry Blunk was able to take some quality pictures of the M3 Sedan running its course at the Ring and was able to taker detailed close-up shots of the mule when it was parked just outside momentarily.From these shots, we can tell the M3 Sedan will get the same body treatments as its 2-door variant. We can guess that the M3 Sedan will debut in Frankfurt this September with sales proceeding sometime next year. SNAPS are a retro candy that I didn’t know about until just a week or two ago. I was in Michael’s Arts and Crafts store and noticed it on the “retro” candy rack alongside Sugar Babies and Necco Slapsticks. “Oooooooo, what’s this?” I thought to myself as I picked up the package.
