      Santorini
So, we’re back from Santorini, or Thera.. or Thira, whatever you wanna call it. We were there for a week, and it was really great. First of all we stayed at a place called Kamari where there was nothing to do but to lie on the beach and swim in the ocean, and at the [...]

2004 Argyros Estate “Barrel Select” White Wine, Santorini, Greece
I go out of my way to taste wines from up-and-coming, out of the way, and generally obscure wine regions. I never know what I’m going to find, and sometimes I’m really surprised. Greece can hardly be considered any of those things, perhaps with the exception of up-and-coming, but if one were to be wholly accurate [...]

BreakfastBreakfast was standard. Lon ate another one of those chocolate almond pastries but I resisted the platter of donuts.Getting LostSantorini was by far my favorite stop, which is no surprise. Everyone raves about it and it is truly wonderful. Our boat anchored out in the water. We boarded tenders to get to shore, where we road the cable cars up the steep mountain side (while watching other

Development of the Atlantis connection: sorry, but Minoan civilization didn't disappear that suddenly, it held on for decades after Thera erupted ← Previous revision Revision as of 20:25, 29 April 2008 Line 122: Line 122: *Construction of the structure was advanced for its time period. The ancient engineers were able to control the path of air and light through the depths of the palace quarters using "pier and door partitioning", spiral staircase "light wells", and other features. Santorini
Only on Santorini, the volcanic Greek island where the legend of the sunken city of Atlantis likely originated, will you find luxury hotels that are -- well, basically, caves. That's how people have lived for thousands of years along the 1,000-foot-high cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea, in caves hollowed out of the black and cream-colored rock. Every now and then, most recently in 1956, an eruption and earthquake reduce the houses and churches to rubble and people rebuild, always around the caves, or "traditional houses" that have long provided shelter there.

      Santorini: Breathtaking displays of nature
After some hesitation, we decided we would try to make a day’s excursion to Santorini from Crete rather than spend a night. There was too much see in Crete during the short stay of a week, and a night at Santorini would have reduced our stint. Of course, not stopping for the night meant missing the fabled sunset on the caldera, but we decided to sacrifice this for the sake of more time in Crete. It was on reaching Koutouloufari that we discovered the ideal one-day excursion to Santorini. This was by catamaran, a high-speed ferry which made the journey between Heraklion and Santorini in less than two hours. The organisers arranged it so that the catamaran made both the outgoing and returning journeys on the same day, which we were unable to organise easily long distance, on the Net.

The magical Greek island of Santorini
Legend says that the Greek island of Santorini is the last remaining piece of the lost land of Atlantis. If you find that harder to swallow than an overcooked souvlaki, don't worry, you are not alone; I did as well, as I have always thought that the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean were the remnants of Atlantis. Well, it makes more sense given the ocean's name. But having been to Santorini there is no doubt in my mind what it is: a magic place. From the breathtaking views to the stunning architecture which is different to anywhere else in Greece, Santorini will capture the heart of even those travellers who think they have tired of Greek islands.

      Santorini to acquire much-needed hospital
A hospital will be built on one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations, the island of Santorini, in a bid to better meet the needs of the 100,000 patients that seek medical attention on the island each year, Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos said yesterday. Avramopoulos said that a medical clinic will be initially built in Imerovigli which will then be upgraded to a hospital over the next two years. According to figures from local officials, some 92,000 people sought medical attention on the island in 2006, with most of the cases arising during the busy summer months.

      SANTORINI

      Chasing Angelina in Santorini
As I was walking past the newsstands today I noticed all the gossip magazines with Angelina Jolie on the front cover and it reminded me of my trip to Santorini. A few years ago, my sister and I headed over to Santorini on a ferry from Athens as we had heard it was the most spectacular of the Greece’s islands. We had seen all the pictures of the white washed churches with the blue dome roofs and breathtaking views of the caldera and we wanted to experience it for ourselves. We left our hostel in Athens to head off to the ferry terminal and upon picking up our bags from the luggage room, bumped into two guys who were also heading to Santorini on the 10:00pm ferry. We were told it was best to get the night ferry as we could save on paying for a night’s accommodation (not that sleeping on a park bench on the deck was particularly comfortable). After a relatively sleepless night we arrived into Santorini around 6am the following morning, and what a sight it was to behold. As we ste

      Santorini
Santorini is a small, circular archipelago of volcanic islands located in southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km south-east from Greece’s mainland. It is also known as Thera (or Thira). It is the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km² (28 mi²), and in 2001 had an estimated population of 13,600. Santorini is essentially what has been left from an enormous volcanic explosion which destroyed the settlements thereon and led to the creation of the current geological caldera. Its spectacular natural beauty along with its eminent nightlife make the island one of Europe’s top tourist hotspots. Coordinates: 36°24′N 25°24′E
