The special model, of which only 25 will be made, pays homage to the one of the most famous automotive names of all time. First built in 1906, specifically to publicise the then new Rolls-Royce 40/50 h.p. six-cylinder model, the Silver Ghost established the Rolls-Royce reputation for reliability and engineering excellence. The name was coined in 1907 by Rolls-Royce Managing Director, Claude Johnson, by virtue of its silver coachwork and its ‘extraordinary stealthiness’. The original Silver Ghost, registered AX-201, competed in the 1907 Scottish Reliability Trial, for which it won the gold medal in its class for hill climbing speed and reliability. The Silver Ghost went on in that year to break the world record for a non-stop motor run, covering a London to Glasgow route 27 times, with mileage totaling 14,371 miles

By coincidence several of the cars taking place in this event were parked at Inverewe Garden during our visit to the gardens on Wednesday 6 June. I’m sure that some car enthusiasts would have loved to see these cars at such close quarters but I’m not really into cars of any age but they were impressive grand old cars. 2007 La Concours 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom 1 Jonckheere Coupe.Colloquially referred to as "The Round Door Rolls" for obvious reasons, Belgian coachbuilder Jonckheere gave this Rolls its imposing bodywork in the mid-1930s.Having passed through the hands of several collectors (one who had the car painted with gold dust), the Phantom was treated to a full restoration several years ago and is currently owned and displayed by the Petersen Automotive Museum. The poster car for this year's Los Angeles Concours d'Elegance was a very special Rolls-Royce brought out by the nice folks at The Petersen Museum.Although we doubt anybody over at Mercedes would admit it, this car appears to be the inspiration for the Maybach Exelero show car from a couple of years ago. OK, probably not, but both are huge black coupes that seem to have been fashioned for comfortably touring the underworld. The biggest difference is that this Rolls is 80 years older than the Maybach.Officially it is a 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom I Aerodynamic Coupe with coachwork by Jonckheere, but most people call it the "Round Door" Rolls. Originally delivered to its owner wearing a more humble Hooper Cabriolet body in 1925, it was sold to the Raja of Nanpara soon after.
