Facing Them Down: head-on or roundabout?
Two weeks, two political party conferences, two leaders' speeches. The Liberals’ watery tax and loose end waffling and wandering left it to Labour to raise the bar by standing still and speaking the common sense of our age.A week ago, Nick Clegg, already lacking gravitas, had abandoned the dignity of the lectern to waltz the podium. If you think it didn’t look absurd that’s down, quite liter

DECATUR, Ill. – Scott Thompson loves roundabouts, and not just because of their superior traffic handling capabilities. “Basically, they’re a great tool for messing with people’s heads,” said Thompson, 55, traffic engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation. “We’ve done a lot messed-up things like three-way yield signs and LED traffic arrows, but none of them [...]

Vernon Way roundabout by Municipal Square
There were a few mentions about key routes in and out of Crewe the other week. Here's a major hot spot, the roundabout midway down Vernon Way. The problem is that two lanes hit the roundabout from one side while all three exits (the bit of Vernon Way that heads past Tescos, Earle Street over the bridge and the bit that goes past the Municipal Buildings) have just a single lane. Furthermore, there are Zebra Crossings on both bits of Vernon Way! It gets congested. Especially over the Earle Street bridge. Especially when NEXT have one of their daft sales on the Grand Junction Retail Park. Gridlock. The railway bridge needs to be widened, ideally, to take traffic quickly out of town and down Macon Way. Either that or another slip road needs to be created that crosses over the railway lines before you hit the Heritage Centre. Something that would emerge halfway down Macon Way. That would improve things immensely. But all that costs money. Until then, enjoy the pleasant snap that suggests t

Irish Drivers Roundabout Way of Thinking.
Here's a post from Francie, who incidentally has a driving record just slightly better than that of Richard Hammond :-)Irish drivers, don't you just love them? For a majority of them the rules of the road is a once-off document that is studied prior to their driving test, and then banished from their memory following a successful pass. On a recent drive from Dublin to Sligo, I once again experienced the stress involved in driving on our national road network. The majority of this nation has a distinct lack of understanding for the rules of the road. Many drivers are a time-bomb on our roads waiting to go off; it's no wonder road safety is such a high topic in the news. Why don't people understand that the outside lane of a dual carriage-way or motorway is for overtaking, and drivers should only enter this lane whilst in the process of overtaking another vehicle and then re-enter the inside lane until they need to repeat this process? That means that no, you cannot hog this lane f
