Rosetta is a Mac X technology that lets an application written for a PowerPC Mac run on an Intel Mac.
Rosetta allows applications to run as non-native binaries (complied to run only on PowerPC Macs). Rosetta runs automatically, without any kind of user interaction. The majority of Mac OS X applications for PowerPC Macs can run on an Intel Mac using Rosetta.
If an application is said to be “running translated” on an Intel Mac, it is using Rosetta and most likely is a PowerPC applicatiton (or universal binary application forced to run translated). For the user, launching a PowerPC application using Rosetta is transparent. Unlike the Classic environment, where you launched a Mac OS 9 application running under Mac OS X, there are not any visual cues to indicate that the application is translated.
