AS I finally left ‘Latium’, it dawned on me that I had failed to try their signature dish: the multi-coloured four fish ravioli. This was spectacularly remiss of me. Their potent little parcels are legendary and that dish won ‘best U.K. pasta plate’. I blame my French companion for distracting me (and fellow diners) with lewd gestures...Despite being founded by an important duo, Latium has

Monday Manna is being hosted by Joanne at An Open Book today. This is from an e-mail I received tonight:"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom shouldbe tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign landsshould be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must againlearn to work, instead of living on public assistance. " -- Marc
As I wrote in the title of this post, the Romans do it again… and again… and again. Roman cuisine is one of our favorites and Rome is one of our favorite cities to visit and eat in. This dish, gnocchi alla romana, is a dish that reminds me how versatile, creative and [...]

If you arrive in Albania and ask the driver take you to a place you want to go and he shakes his had from side to side, do not close the door and look for another driver. It will take you too much time, because in Albania, shaking head from side to side means “yes” and nodding the head up and down means “no”. Imagine an Albanian attendant’s alarm in the airport if he asks you such questi

Know what I find the hardest thing about writing these Bible notes up is? The quotations.I know how whiney this is, but copying and pasting all the quotes across from biblegateway.com, plus adding the bold html is really offputting. Probably because my left four fingers and thumb will typically be bookmarking five pages in my NIV at the time, so my right hand has to work overtime, especially wit

Actually, no - or at least not many.A recent article in the Gulf Times, based on claims by a rogue archeologist, claimed that Qatar was settled by traders from the Indus Valley, and that the Romans had settlements in Fuwarit, Jessasiya and Umm Almah. You can read the article on the Gulf Times website.I was very impressed and mentioned it to an archeologist friend - who told me that it was all rubbish. The article was based on claims by an amateur archeologist who had, shall we say, misinterpreted and exaggerated the facts.According to the Amiri Diwan website the Romans may have been in Qatar at some point - however, this seems to have been limited to a temporary fishing station. The truth is that for centuries Bahrain was more attractive to settlers, because of its fresh water springs and

Spanish villas are amongst one of the more popular accommodations, as Spain is a popular destination and the rental prices are relatively cheaper than any other region.

[Copyright notice this is my stuff and carries with it jws blogprint] Romans 6:23 tells us that ‘the wages of sin is death’. A story from China today, I believe serves to illustrate this point well:
BEIJING (Reuters) - A Chinese man dropped dead after playing Internet games for three consecutive days, state media said on Monday as China seeks to wean Internet addicts offline.
The man from the southern boomtown of Guangzhou, aged about 30, died on Saturday after being rushed to the hospital from the Internet cafe, local authorities were quoted by the Beijing News as saying.
“Police have ruled out the possibility of suicide,” the newspaper said, adding that exhaustion was the most likely cause of death. It did not say what game he was playing. (Full story)
2- The Romans have been defeated.3- In the lowest part of the earth. But after defeat they will soon be victorious.4- Between three or nine years. God’s is the imperative first and last. On that day the believers will rejoice.30-The Romans, 2-4At the time of the descent of the Quran, the Romans were practicing Christianity while the Persians were Zoroastrians. The Muslim population was grieved to hear that it was the Persians who had won the war against the Romans since Christians were monotheists. The victory of the Zoroastrians against the believers baffled the Muslims. The Quran predicted that the Romans (Byzantium) would soon become victorious and that the believers would rejoice. The expression “beda seneen” in verse 4 refers to the numbers ranging from three to nine. The number of followers of Muhammad continued to increase. Had this statement of the Quran proved to be wrong, the confidence of the followers in Muhammad would have been shaken and the number of apostates woul
Here's an interesting post by Classics Professor Mary Beard on her blog A Don's Life at The Times of London on-line.
Here are 10 things you thought you knew about the Romans but didn’t. 10 myths about the Romans exploded…!
1) JULIUS CAESAR’S LAST WORDS WERE ‘ET TU BRUTE’Well, only in Shakespeare’s version of the assassination. Probably our best ancient source is Suetonius and he records the words as (in Greek) “kai su teknon” – or “you too my child”. What this means, in fact, isn’t so clear. If it is has a question mark, it smacks of quizzical, dying desperation. Give it an exclamation mark and it becomes a threat (“they’ll get you too kid…”).
2) ROME WAS BUILT ON SEVEN HILLS.Some serious miscalculation here. Palatine, Aventine, Capitoline, Janiculan, Quirinal, Viminal, Esquiline, Caelian, Pincian, Vatican. That’s 10 for a start. Though it all depends I suppose, on what you call a hill.
3) ROMANS HAD ‘VOMITORIA’ TO BE SICK IN BETWEEN COUR
All things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.God's definition of good is that which works to transform us into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Therefore it is possible for a Christian to suffer - such as persecution- and still call it good because God promises that it IS good. If we only look at one point, there are thousands of God-honouring testimonies from Christians who were imprisoned, beaten, or martyred for their faith; of how their trust and love for Christ thrived under the pressure of suffering.

A while ago I wrote a series of posts “Thoughts on War.” It mainly involved an on going conversation with Brian (glad to have you back).
Below is a brief take of mine on the famously referenced Romans 13 from, Let the discussion begin:
“Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”
This is the first verse of the primary passage I hear cited in reference to why we should support the war. The argument I think is that quite simply God has put our president in place and therefore if our governing authorities call for something we should submit (support) it. To a large degree I find no disagreement with this argument. The struggle with this type of thinking for me comes when I start to think about who “Everyone” entails. That means an Iraqi Christian, if called to join the armed forces under Saddam, should join, and support the cause o

C.E.B. Cranfield commenting on Romans 1:16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes...Faith, in the sense in which the term is used here, can exist only as response to the gospel...For Paul, man's salvation is altogether--not almost altogether--God's work; and the faith spoken of here is the openness of the gospel which God Himself creates, the human response of surrender to the judgment and unmerited mercy of God which God himself brings about--God who not only directs the message to the hearer but also Himself lays open the hearer's heart to the message. And yet this faith, as God's work in man, is in a real sense more truly and fully the man's own personal decision than anything which he himself does of himself; for it is the expression of the freedom which God has restored to him--the freedom to obey God...The "all" emphasizes the fact that the gospel is God's power effective unto salvation for all those who thus a
