Okay this month has not exactly started off the right way for me. I hate being home in bed when music is going at Rockhoppers! Then I come back and man did I screw up! I forgot about open mic completely, shut down the shop at 5:00PM and went shopping with my daughter in law. Now granted, I did get some much needed items for the store but ..... to forget open mic completely .... BADDD BADDD RENE!!
This Saturday we are celebrating Rockhoppers birthday. It is our 3rd birthday to be exact. Dan is going to be offering a wonderful class on blogging. This will be your opportunity to learn how to show off your pictures and tell your story. Dan will show you the ins and outs of blogging and how to get your blog noticed! The cost for this class is only $10.00 and it will start at 10:00AM and last t
Kim is our newest artist here at Rockhoppers. I thought maybe you would enjoy seeing some of Kim's work.
Be sure and come check out her work this month. If you cant make it to the shop then check out her gallery listed on our blog. Thanks.

Rockhoppers is looking for some good people. Next month Rockhoppers will be building on it's projects. We are looking for people who might be interested in running small groups. Specifically, Rockhoppers would like to start a singles group and we are looking for a manager to work with Rene to schedule events that singles would be interested in do in small groups. These events cover everything fro
Ok it has been a while since I posted. I am frantically working on an altered jacket that has embroidery, crochet, lace work, macramé, bead work and cut work on it not to mention crewel work and some quilting. It is altered from a men's sport coat and at the rate I am finishing it I will have it done sometime around Christmas. I will post pics of it tomorrow since I don't have a before pic of it.
Tonight we had Eric Herman, a great, great entertainer. He is best known for his childrens shows, and the kids at Rockhoppers really enjoyed him. We got a video of a few of his numbers -- much of his set was top-secret new material, so we couldn't record it.
Eric encourages audience participation, as you can see. It was so much fun! He will come back, and we'll have him in earlier next
Tonight we had Amber Coverdale Sumrall reading from her new poetry collection: "Refuge". Amber's poetry was wonderful, grounded in reality, evocative of our youth and life in general. Thank you Amber!
Poetry on Whidbey Island.
Back in April, when I posted Eric Herman's "The Elephant Song", I never dreamed that Eric would ever play at Rockhoppers. Well, that improbable event is happening! Next Saturday, August 23rd, at 7:00pm, Eric Herman brings his Invisible Band to Rockhoppers Coffeehouse for a performance sure to please both young and old.
Eric's song "Dance Like an Animal" is my grandson's favorite -- he spo

So I haven't posted in a while and I kind of figured it was time to. I have been a little busy though so you really must excuse me. I have been among other things working on a new sign, a new logo, new business cards and some advertising campaigning. I also have been busy scheduling coffee klatches with candidates for the upcoming elections. Not to mention cooking shopping, and planning for Saturd
Michael is one of our first artists, and we've always carried his pieces. Michael also works at Rockhoppers, giving us some necessary time off during the week.
Rainy Day in the Woods
SOLD!
Michaels artwork is made of paper, paper pulp and foam board, so it's very light, even the very large pieces like this one: Rainy Day in the Woods. At 28" x 16", it is Michael's largest piece.

Cassandra played a nice set tonight -- her second album is as nice as her first! Get it from her site, here. We had a great crowd -- Rene's special dinners are getting to be known, and are always memorable. Tonight's seafood manicotti was amazing as always.
Here's the video of Cassandra's show:

A long time ago I read a biography of Vincent Van Gogh. The biography talked about a cafe that he and several authors of the day and several other artists and musicians used to meet at. They would sit for hours and discuss issues of the day. "Among his new friends Vincent counts the painters he refers to as the "artists of the Petit Boulevard" -- Toulouse-Lautrec, Signac, Bernard, and Louis Anque

Even if the construction is NOT almost done!! This has been a hard road to travel on. Here we are in the middle of summer and tourist season and well I might as well not even have the doors open. This last week we were closed to allow for the windows to be put in. Although the painting is not finished on that wall and windows have not been framed, the shop really is pretty much back in order. So we had a really good morning Saturday morning with a lot of people coming in for breakfast. It makes it really exciting when there is a lot of people because of our limited cooking abilities but we did really well this AM and everyone seemed happy. This week has been kind of an interesting week. We have started working on a new business plan and I have to say it is a challenge because of all t
Tonight Anthony Easterwood performed his first gig on Whidbey Island. What an amazing performer! Great voice, great guitar playing, and a fantastic repertoire. Anthony's voice lends itself to country music, but he incorporates pop favorites and oldies in his sets. Come see Anthony before he heads off to American Idol -- he's that good. See the videos:

So for those of you who are local.... you have seen the scaffolding go up and then come down. You have seen the mess and many of you have stayed away either assuming we are closed or wanting to stay away from the construction. The landlady has a team that is going to renovate the building. Renovation... death to an existing business until the work is finished!! I have to admit I was fai
Tonight we had Adam Shults playing his mix of classics and his own music, all in his inimitable style. I recorded his show in two sets -- he had to take a break between sets because of the heat.

Tonight we had some great, great jazz piano from Reagan Kee. Reagan will be back -- starting the 18th of May he is hosting a jazz jam session here every Sunday afternoon. Here's the video of Reagan's sets, I didn't shut the recording off in time, so there's about 1/2 hour of dead air at the end. Just ingore the dead air, OK?

From the entry screen in Town, go into the Coffee Shop. Go up the stairs on the right. Go to the library on the left, or click the red Tales & Stories book on the bottom right. Read The Journal of Captain Rockhopper. You can either read the whole book, or jump to the Newest Writin'. At the end of the Newest Writin', you will find the Captain's Quarters Key.
Don't know what I'm talking about? It's in Club Penguin, Disney's virtual world for kids and pre-teens. Captain Rockhopper is a wandering character, who gives away free and unique goodies in Club Penguin. Since his visits are rare, when he does come to 'town' every day someone surfs into Rockhoppers Daily Grind, searching for information about Captain Rockhopper in Club Penguin.
I thought I'd help them by posting the informa

So, I have to apologize for not posting lately. Dear hubby has been doing all the posts and running the shop for the last week. He gave me the wonderful gift of his cold and BOY did I GET IT! Anyway, it is leaving now and I am slowly recouping.
There are a few things to let you know about for this month. First, Mrs. Henny is going to have the facade of this building redone next week. This is a biggy for us since it means the entrance to Rockhoppers will have to be done through the back of the building instead of the front. I am told this will probably only be for next week but we will see. They need to see what kind of problems they encounter when they get into the existing facade. So there will be signs posted and please don't let the scaffolding scare you off. Parking will be along

Hey penguins! We've all been waiting for him to come, and now he's here! Rockhopper is back! He's come to the Club Penguin shore with his little rowboat, and it turns out that he attatched a motor to it he found on Rockhopper Island. Anyway, he's amazingly brought back some new items again! Anne Smidt is our featured artist for April/May. We have a number of her lovely encaustics here at Rockhoppers. Her work is both grounded in Whidbey's landscapes, and whimsical. Often very colorful, her encaustic techniques allow for great contrast and very rich color depth and saturation.

Michael Morales played tonight with Harvey Dale on guitar and Roger Lengel on percussion. Wonderful night of music, as usual at Rockhoppers. We love our local musicians, but it's especially wonderful when we get great acts from over town.
Here's the video of Michael's first set:
We also were blessed to have Kate Graves, who was joined by Pandi for a couple songs, too. Kate is another great musician from over town, making what seems to be her first trip to the island. Fantastic music!

So Rockhoppers has a new artist. Anne Smidt is a mixed media artist who does Creative Encaustic Renderings. Unlike so many other Encaustic artists Anne's work is colorful, vibrant and full of whimsy.
Anne never received formal art training, but for many years painted "functional art furniture: and acrylic "text memorabilia" on canvas. Anne spent 28 years in the high tech industry as an event planner and was surrounded by many talented, artistic people throughout her marketing career.
Anne paints to express her love for her circle of friends, Puget Sound, and her home state, Idaho. She also paints angels in loving memory of her mom, Ruby.Anne is a member of the Island Art Council and is on the committee of the Open Studio Tour on Whidbey Island.

Rockhopper Is Back:
Here is what the Club Penguin Team Said :
Hello Penguins!
This weekend marks the return of Captain Rockhopper after being gone for a while. He’s been spotted hanging around on his ship, at the beach, in the plaza, and a few other places. I hope everyone gets the chance to meet him because it’s a lot of fun!
In other news: Construction is going well in the Plaza and I think it’s going to be really cool when it’s done. Also, don’t forget to keep voting for your favorite party, it’s going to be a blast!!
Until then… Waddle on!

So we are at the start of the holiday season. We are pleased to be able to show you some wonderful new artists and their work and we hope you keep us in mind for the upcoming holidays. Art and furniture make wonderful gifts for those you love!
I hope you all can make it to Rockhoppers tomorrow night. It is a great night for music here. Jewbilee will be playing and it is a wonderful wonderful group. Their music is lively fun and new and I can guarantee you will enjoy it!
Tuesday nights have been slow here at Rockhoppers. We have a community song circle that is at this point, a very small group. I encourage all of you to come join us for this event every Tuesday at 7:00PM. It is fun and lively and we are hoping it will bring in more of our community to spend time together, laughing and singing. This is an old fashioned sing a long for those who love to sing. Dex came tonight and played his love songs. He was great! For some reason, the webcam wouldn't record his performance -- I've got to troubleshoot that problem, for sure.
I did get video from my camera, but those files are huge, and I have to edit them. Expect some videos soon.
Text about Whidbey Island goes here.
So I have been doing some exploring lately when I have a minute or two and have noticed some really fun sites. I kind of thought I would share these with you. See what you think. As with our blog, they cover a variety of subjects.
Historelli's Social Club, and History is a Weapon, and finally Dr. History. These are blogs that deal with history and are fun to explore.
Indie Craft Documentary, Illustration Art, and Judy Perez's Blog, 2007 Bead Journal Project, The Art makerS Imagination Unlimited, and we can't forget this one notcot.com These blogs all deal in art in one way or another.
Hobo Teacher Web Blog. This blog is great for giving a real look at what a teacher's world is really like. Plus this guy has an incredibly good sense of humor and actually loves his work!
Just surfing the computer here on Whidbey Island
I thought it might be a good idea to post what types of payment we accept here at Rockhoppers. We get a fair amount of international travelers, and we want to be inclusive here. Of course, we take US currency. Cash is always welcome.
We often get asked if we accept credit cards, despite having a sign on the door that says Visa/ MC. Yes, we take credit cards. I can't imagine having a business that doesn't take credit cards. We also will take your debit card, although if the amount is under $20, you have to specify that you want a debit transaction. That's because it's cheaper for us to run your card as credit than it is to run it as debit, unless you're charging more than $20.
We would like to accept Canadian money, at par, particularly since it's doing so well against the dollar. Canadian money seems like it might be a better currency than ours. The problem is that our bank makes it very complex to deal with Canadian money. So no Canadian money for now.
We also don'

Well it is turning to fall and it is time for changes so Rockhoppers is a Changin' (sorta) We welcomed three new artists into the gallery this week and their work is now on display. Pam Sanders is our featured artist this month with some wonderful bright and imaginative pieces. Pam is a very eclectic artist who has been creating since high school. She began with drawing and painting and has evolved into "anything goes".
A detail from this one:
Pam first began showing her hand sculpted polymer clay dolls and still incorporates polymer clay into her mixed media collages. Her work is best described as abstract expressionism. Myth, ancient cultures and fantasy novels are her inspirations. Pam's mixed medial collages are made with hand painted papers, and bold bright color and texture are used to create depth. Her work is fascinating and I really encourage you to come check it out since she will only be showing her till October 1st.
The next artist is an artist that was sho
We are going to have some fun this next month. Don't forget Rockhoppers new schedule and our many events. Also we are looking for groups who play bridge, pinochle and other card games to come in and play at Rockhoppers. (I do not have a gambling license so poker and other gambling games are out.) We welcome bizarre games like Killer Bunnies or Kill Dr. Lucky and we love playing most games too so if you want to play and cant find someone to play with you come to Rockhoppers for some board game fun.
OK so it is time for a new calendar. This month is perpetually slow due to vacations before school starts so our calendar is missing a few nights of live music. If you want to see if we are having music on a particular Sat. please give us a call. I will also try and e-mail everyone for updates on the music.
As with most things there may be some unexpected changes this month. I have some things in the works and am not sure when they are going to pan out but am hoping it will be soon. I will keep you appraised of any further happenings.
So here is another Thursday. Not a lot going on here, except I certainly have been busy. First there was making the flier for the Progressive Associations meeting next week, then doing the invites for the Clinton Chamber for their "meet and greet" event in the park next week, then an interview with a local paper reporter and I was interviewed for the Progressive Association as well today.
We are planning our dinner theater troupe and will have our first meeting next week for that. It starts at 5:00PM on Thursdays. Come see what we are up to or join in the fun. L will be directing us and showing us the best of improv and we will be creating an acting community that will be welcoming and fun for all it's members. It is our plan to do dinner theater at rockhoppers and then move it out to other venues including nursing homes, retirement homes, the community hall for a dinner theater and other venues as we can.
I am also finally getting my altered books going. We will start that tomor

So here we are entering May. I am so excited! To begin with.. On Wednesdays this month we have a comedian who is trying to put together a comedy night, Wednesdays here at Rockhoppers. The Park and Rec department is sponsoring an altered book group on Friday AM and on Thursdays they are sponsoring an acting class. We have live music every Saturday evening, Shawn Snyder who came and visited from Boston in January, is coming back to play the Rockhopper (he is scheduled on a Sunday!) and Clinton Days at the end of the month promises to be a HUGE event this year.I will post more on that closer to the date.
Closer to this date however is another VERY exciting event that has been scheduled at the Rockhopper. Thanks to Carolyn Tamler, we are hosting Justin Ruben from the National Organization of MoveOn.org. Justin Ruben is the Organizing Director at MoveOn.org, where he oversees MoveOn's campaign work day-to-day. In 2006 he ran Call for Change, MoveOn's successful get-out-the-vote program,
Well, we have had another semi-busy week at Rockhoppers. I have been doing a variety of things in the marketting department and sometime today I need to get my taxes done. We have had several customers come in to see the art this week and we have had some fair days. On top of that we have been dealing with Clinton Days. Clinton Days is the annual event that is sponsored by the Clinton Chamber and is held in Clinton in honor of Clinton's history and community. We are attempting to turn Clinton into a destination not just a drive-thru. So the Clinton Days events are going to occur over Memorial Day weekend. We are going to have live music in several venues, all different kinds of food, a dance Saturday evening, speakers, belly dancing, childrens carnival, pet show and parade, and the SCA is doing a demonstration or two (hopefully) on Monday. We have a memorial day presentation, a history hunt, and a live Life game that we will be playing as well as a "Scrabble" game contest and a variet
Rockhoppers welcomes the Seattle group MSM Saturday April 21. If you enjoy jazz
and are looking for a group that makes you want to move than dont miss this group. Meet the members of the band. Mike's been playing bass for a while. He's adept at metal, classic rock, blues, jazz and plays acoustic music with our own Bards of the Koad too. Mark is a well rounded drummer. He plays with Raks Fafiki on the belly dance scene, or sitting in with the local Dead Head band at a festival. Scotty plays keys like nobody's business. These guys are really good so if you miss them you will have missed a terrific evening of jazz ! The music starts at 7:00PM. SO… DO NOT BE Late!
Hi everyone,
I apologize for not blogging yesterday. I had a meeting at the Community Hall wearing one of my many many "hats". So it was kind of a busy day yesterday and not conducive to sitting at my computer.
Anyway, I wanted to let you know what is happening this weekend! MSM is coming to Rockhoppers. We will pro
I have had a fair week this week all things considered. I have walked everyday with Kimi except Monday and I have had a lot of energy and well I have gotten a lot done. I am working on scheduling things for Rockhoppers for Clinton days and that has been a big to do.. I am also responsible for scheduling things for the Progressive Association for Clinton Days so this has been a lot on my plate. I have two entertainers coming from out of town in May and have also been trying to get them scheduled and well it has been a really hectic day not to mention getting my taxes done.. dont mention them it just makes me ill and well my brochures are going out on the ferries within the next week. Well lets just say it has been busy and it is no wonder I am a little fried! But I always feel so good when a week like this occurs. I need to work on a few art ideas.. One is a small altered book. I am going to do a screen using the same idea as the book and may sell both of them together. The title is "Wo
We just got some pieces in from Mark O'Malley today. So I am posting a few of them for you to see. I have also posted pieces from Crystal Place. These pieces are part of her estate and the sale of them will help with funeral expenses. As you can see Crystal was a true artist and extremely meticulous in the work she did. She will be missed and was a true asset to the artist community. I expect we will be getting more pieces from estate over the next few weeks. It is Rockhopper's honor to be able to display these pieces. It was our honor to have known her.
So another Monday at Rockhoppers. I cannot tell you how nice it was to come home and have so many of you come in on Thursday to see how our vacation was. It truly is wonderful to be a part of this community!I have to tell you about the night before we left for Disneyland. Actually this is not a short story it is more of an anctedote. Dan and I had told our musicians and our customers that we would be skipping out of the shop early that evening and please to not think of us as rude. We had to be at the airport at 5:00AM the next morning as our flight was at 6:15. So we were going to try and get on the 9:30PM boat and spend the night at a hotel not far from the airport. The evening went wonderfully... The band was awesome (no surprise there), Mary was ready to be left by herself and everyone was ok (even encouraging us) with us leaving early... Dan (who really was like a very large kid over this trip..) had just gotten his hat and raincoat and was getting ready to push me out the door at
Erik Christensen was our Saturday night music this week. He sang, and played his fabulous Ronald Ho guitar. Erik was accompanied by Mark Strohschoin on bass, and Andrew Krus on keyboard, drums, and bass. Here's a really long clip. Enjoy!

Folk/Pop Legend Clem Floyd, Live at Rockhoppers, Saturday, February 24, 2007 at 7:00pm.Whidbey resident Clem Floyd is a bona-fide folk/pop legend. Clem was a fixture at the Avant Garde Coffeehouse in Milwaukee, the heart of the city's counter-culture in the 60's. Clem introduced his roommate and musical partner David Crosby (yes, that David Crosby) to the music of the Beatles while living in Chicago. Clem brought home "Meet the Beatles", and David was absolutely floored: "Those are folk-music changes, but it's got rock and roll back beat. You can't do that, but they did! Holy yikes!"Later, Clem would build a 43-foot Trimaran in his Hollywood backyard, and sail off to South America. When he returned to the States, he became an engineer with Union Carbide for 25 years, leaving the music industry behind. Now performing again, Clem is an amazing entertainer and musician. Come to Rockhoppers Saturday night for a wonderful concert experience, and don't forget our regular Friday Open
