At Convertible Car Magazine we are rarely ones to get into wild speculation. The web is always full of rumours related to cars under development and concepts being brought to reality. We however prefer to keep quiet until we have some fairly solid confirmation of the reality.That said, when the totally unfounded rumour of an Audi R8 Roadster reached us we couldn't help getting our scissors out to get an idea of what it could look like. With the R8 being based on the Lamborghini Gallardo platform, of which there is a rather magnificent Spyder model, it is a distinct possibility that the popular R8 could get the same treatment. However VW group would not want to damage sales of the higher priced Lamborghini and with the likelyhood of a takeover bid by Porsche in the not too distant future, who knows what lies ahead.

It pains us to see a dead horse beaten so rigorously, but the folks at Mercedes have yet to stop. But then, they did paid a lot for that horse. The SLR project that then-Daimler-Benz undertook in partnership with its F1 racing partner, McLaren, never went as well as hoped. Sales were disappointing, and although the car’s performance put it into the upper echelons of autodom, it never succeeded at giving its competition a real run for their money. And at half a million bucks, it’s a lot of money to run for. Rather than cut their loses, Mercedes and McLaren have opted instead to turn out additional derivations. After the “standard” SLR coupe came the 722, which was widely derided for having ruined the ride with little additional benefit. A racing version, dubbed 722 GT, followed. Rumors circulated long ago that additional body-styles were under consideration – what are they talking about, a shooting brake? – but only the open-air version made it to production.

Just in time for X-mas Aston Martin has produced a very special and exclusive V8 Vantage N400 Roadster in a limited run of just 240 cars. Created in part as homage to Aston’s achievements at the Nurburgring where the V8 Vantage just competed. This ride isn’t all about elegance and refinement, horsepower from the 4.3L V8 engine has been enhanced, placing peak power to 400hp and peak torque to 420Nm. In addition to the horsepower upgrades there are new side sill designs, bonnet and side strake meshes, and clear rear lamp lenses. To celebrates Aston Martin's success in the ADAC 24-hour race at Germany's Nürburgring with the Vantage N24 race car, they have released the limited edition Aston Martin V8 Vantage N400 Roadster. The power output of the 4.3-litre V8 is increased by 20 bhp to a total of 400 bhp by engine modifications and a new free flowing exhaust.The limited edition model also benefits from a sport pack that includes lighter-weight, graphite-finished alloy wheels and stiffer springs, revised shocks and a new anti-roll bar. The improvements to the V8 Vantage N400 are intended to allow the car to break the 8-minute lap time barrier on the Nürburgring's famed North Loop. Seen here in Karussell Orange, the car will also be available in the less conspicuous Bergwerk Black or Lightning Silver. The new CEO of Tesla Motors, Michael Marks, has sent out a letter to all customers on their waiting list confirming that Tesla's engineers have recovered of most of the range that had been lost to weight increases and other engineering changes. The Roadster has now been validated on the EPA combined cycle with a range of 245 miles (252 city and 236 highway) per charge. They have also made structural improvements with one of the validation prototypes now having passed the side impact test that caused problems for an earlier version. However, prospective buyers will have to wait longer for their cars. Tesla's updated production schedule will see them only building a small number of production cars by the end of this year with the first fifty being delivered in the first quarter of 2008. Once production increases they plan to produce a further 600 cars by the end of the 2008 model year.

2007  Australian International Sydney Motor Show automakers report: Lexus is going to debut the LS 600hL luxury hybrid, the IS-F performance sedan and the LX 570 luxury off-roader at the Sydney Motor Show. The 2007 Lexus stand will encompass the brand’s complete hybrid vehicle line-up, headlined by the soon-to-be-released Lexus LS 600hL long-wheelbase luxury saloon. Lexus LS 600hL is the world’s first V8 hybrid, and the all-wheel drive also features Lexus’ most opulent interior, containing an ottoman rear seat. Other performance hybrid vehicles on the stand will include the Lexus GS 450h performance sedan and the Lexus RX 400h hybrid SUV. Mercedes-Benz will in future also market its SLR McLaren super sports car in the form of a roadster with a top. In common with Formula 1 vehicles of today, it, too, will be made of carbon fibre, a material that will endow the vehicle with a very high degree of safety as well as extreme torsional stiffness at the same high level as the coupé version. This gives rise, in combination with the racing-type chassis, to outstanding ride characteristics. The maximum speed of the new high-performance sports car, which is powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine delivering 460 kW/626 hp, is 332 km/h, therefore at the same high level as the coupé. Although, thanks to its fully retractable top, the Roadster offers undiluted open-air driving pleasure in the highest performance class, its occupants in no way lose out in terms of comfort or the vehicle's suitability for everyday use. Among changes to the ’06 line are small suspension tweaks to improve ride and handling, a six-speed manual gearbox that is standard across the line (the old 2.5i model had five gears), and a six-speed automatic with a paddle-shift manumatic available as a $1275 option. Both models now have the 3.0-liter inline-six engine that powers 3-series sedans. With the new engine — its block is a composite of aluminum and magnesium — come new names. The base 2.5i is now the 3.0i and uses the 325i engine configuration, making 215 horsepower, 31 more than the outgoing 2.5i inline-six. The old 3.0i becomes the 3.0si. Its engine receives the same upgrades as the 330i’s to produce a stout 255 horses and 220 pound-feet of torque, improvements of 30 and 6, respectively, when compared with the previous 3.0i’s

With all the changes going on at Chrysler we were concerned that the Dodge Demon roadster concept would never see the light of day. Fortunately then, design chief Trevor Creed shares our concerns. He is fighting for the car to make it through to production and recently claimed that the "conditions were right" for such a vehicle, and with Cerberus' new ownership, the private equity group could make a lot of friends inside and outside Chrysler by making the Demon a reality. Chrysler have been through three CEOs, and two ownership groups in the past 18 months so the launch of this fun little roadster, pitched as a baby Viper could be a very positive move.
