      Road Trip: Part 3
Our master plan was to make it home to Texas by early evening. Another 900 miles remained from Holbrook. No problem....We left the WigWam in the rear view mirror and headed east.We couldn't drive across northern Arizona and not see either the Grand Canyon or The Petrified Forest / Painted Desert. We voted on the the latter since we had both seen the Grand Canyon before. Growing up in Arizona I had been there a bunch of times and had even hiked to the bottom and camped there once in high school. The Petrified Forest is only about 20 miles east of Holbrook. At 7 AM we were the only ones there. It was nice not being stuck behind a long line of cars full of tourists.Additionally, the colors at sunrise were awesome. The journey from Picton to Christchurch took about 5 hours, such a long drive!InterislanderFor a comparison, I think the scenery in South Island is more breathtaking than North Island. The Southern Alps stands up above all. North Island is more lively and developed. Road Trip Travel Inspires the World's Most Boring Video Game
On November 23, 2007, a group of Canadians sat down to raise money for a children's charity via a gaming marathon. Nothing novel about that you might think, except that the game they'll play, "Desert Bus", is so boring it's never been officially released. The road trip travel game comprises an 8 hour drive in real time with no rest breaks, no pause button (so you can't go grab a snooze), and no pleasant scenery or screaming police sirens to break the monotony. Yes, that's right: just 8 straight, long hours of driving through bleak highway. Once the player reaches Vegas, he scores the princely sum of one point at which point he turns around and heads back to Tucson - another long 8 hour journey - to be awarded, you guessed it, another point. The Canadian comedy group LoadingReadyRun kicked off their marathon last month and two days later, had already overshot their target of $5000 by clocking in at $8000 for the charity Child's Play. The marathon was broadcast

      Road Trip 2008 - Cancelled
Z and I have decided to cancel (or rather, postpone once again) our 2008 road trip. The plan was two weeks in the Southwest - Arizona, New Mexico, Grand Canyon, Four Corners, Meteor Crater, etc. Instead we’ll be visiting Astroland at New York’s Coney Island for a week (or so). The trip to New York is too expensive in terms of both gas and time to make it a road trip in 2008. With two full years of anticipation for this grand two week road trip why would we up and cancel it? One word: history. Here’s a bit of that history, courtesy of Wikipedia- The original Switchback Railway at Coney Island was the first roller coaster designed as an amusement ride in America. It was designed by LaMarcus Adna Thompson in 1881 and constructed in 1884.[1] It appears that Thompson based his design, at least in part, on the Mauch Chunk Switchback Gravity Railroad which was a coal-mining train that had started carrying passengers as a thrill ride in 1827.

      Huell Howser's Road Trip
I just love that guy. I think this is partly due to the fact that he travels all over MY state and shows me cool things to photograph. The other day I caught an episode on the City of Orange, of all places. I lived there many, many moons ago (but not near the Circle) and never knew any of the details shown on "Road Trip." I'm now planning to spend some time there soon and photograph some of the very cool areas he showed me -- er, um, everyone. While thinking about following my heart (photographically) I mentioned that I would be taking, and posting, more beach and coastal images. I've expanded this goal and have now decided to try and post an Orange County image every day. I want people everywhere to see why Orange County is such a perfect place to live. I mean, I know we have the most beautiful beaches in the world, but there are so many more diverse, and very cool, things to see here. So, stand by, and check back often for lots of Orange County images! (And, yes, especially t

      Road Trip
Before kids it used to be so easy to throw a few things in a suitcase and head out on the road.  After having kids going on a road trip is a whole other ball game.  The sheer amount of things you need to pack can be staggering.  If you forget something important like a favorite blanket or toy you are in big trouble. After weeks of planning and days of procrastination we have the car loaded.  We have packed toys, snacks, special drinks and the DVD player (to be brought out in cases of extreme emergency) for entertainment.  I am hoping that I have packed enough of the right kinds of clothing so that the kids will be properly dresses and not too hot or too cold.  I am praying that I did not forget anything that is not critical. We are off for a few weeks at my parent’s house.  My youngest sister is getting married, so there are going to be an assortment of odd relatives in town.   I am hoping that I manage to keep my sanity intact.  Wish me luck!

      Road Trip: Sturgis, South Dakota
I did not go on this trip, but I'm sharing pictures taken by Doug and his friend, John, as they rode their motorcycles across Minnesota and South Dakota to this year's motorcycle rally in Sturgis.DougJohnYes, the guys did wear protective jackets and helmets. It was very hot, though, so when they stopped at different places, they immediately took off their gear. In some places, the temperature was over 100°F.SturgisHill CityOf course, now I wish I had gone because I'm thinking about all the pictures I could have taken. On the other hand, riding across Minnesota and South Dakota on the back of Doug's bike doesn't sound too comfortable.

      Road trip map
After some fiddling around with Google Maps I've managed to come up with a little map of our journey through France and Spain. It would be way cool if somebody came up with a web app that could be used by normal people to do this kind of thing...

My Road Trip Out of Camelot
I grew up a Navy brat. That is, my father was a career man in the U.S. Navy. Air Traffic Controlman, to be specific. His tours of duty were 18 months at a time, and except for a couple of impractical overseas assignments (Vietnam, Iceland), the entire family went along for the ride. This resulted in a lot of road trips and even a handful of trans-ocean boat trips and cross-country airline flights. It was the road trips that I enjoyed the most. We often got 2 weeks to travel, and my dad enjoyed spending as much of that time exploring the side roads. The best trip – in my opinion – was the road trip from NY to CA in the early 1960’s. Dad didn’t even grumble about the high cost of gas (30 cents a gallon), since the Navy paid. The bonus for us kids: we got off from school for 2 weeks. We didn’t really “rough it,” for the most part. We hauled a rented Airstream Bambi, a 16-foot broom closet on wheels. It meant we had a tiny kitchen and even smaller bathro

      Road Trip !
It's the start of the new semester...it looks like I'll be teaching 2 new courses and that makes it crunch time. Add to that a long-standing weekend date with my in-laws in this place...and I'm not sure how much blogging I'll be able to fit in this week.In the mean time, amuse yourself with the new college ratings from U S News and World Report.

MIDDLE AGED ROAD TRIPBy Rick Kaempfer & Dave Stern & Dane Placko Because tomorrow is the 30th anniversary of Elvis' death, we're re-running the piece about our recent trip to Memphis. We hope you enjoy it.Let us set the stage.Rick had to go to Memphis for a media conference. He knew that Dave badly needed to get out of town (he has three little girls including twin one-year-olds), and they both knew that fellow college buddy Dane would be game for coming along. So…after getting approval from mildly disapproving spouses…the plans were made for an old fashioned boy’s road trip.Of course, it wasn’t technically a road trip in the old-fashioned sense of the word. The idea of driving, for instance, was abandoned pretty quickly when Dave and Dane pointed out to the clueless Rick that Memphis was not “about four hours” away from Chicago.Other than that, it was exactly like a traditional hard-core partying road trip…*In the airport, Dane had all of his hair products confiscated

      Road trip
It all started when my brother read Trek by Paul Stewart. The book describes the story of four people attempting to cross Africa (including the Sahara) in a Morris Minor during the 50s. Unfortunately it all ended in tragedy. Oddly enough, due to this story, we head out on Thursday on a road trip of our own. Not quite as dangerous as crossing the Sahara (although by all accounts, thanks to GPS, even that journey is much less risky than in the past), we're heading off to Spain to see my dad. The original plan was to go in a Rover P4, but the demands of teenagers mean we have to go in an air-conditioned people carrier. From a personal perspective, I also see this as part of the slow travel movement. I haven't worked out the figures but I'm hoping this will be better for the environment than flying (although staying at home would be even better of course) and will be much more fun than being crammed on an EasyJet plane. So move along, there won't be anything to see&

Yea, but how are they on a road trip?
A recent study found the average Canadian walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found Canadians drink, on average, 22 gallons of beer a year. That means, on average, Canadians get about 41 miles to the gallon. Kind Of Makes You Proud To Be Canadian, eh!Your "always with the stupid shit, eh!" scribe;Allan W Janssen

      Free California road trip guide
Twelve road trip itineraries are detailed in the California Drives magazine. Each focuses on a regional theme, for instance "deserts," "gold country," or "inland empire" (which I've always thought sounded way cooler than it is). The itineraries range in length from two to eight days and from 100 to 785 miles.

      Road Trip to South Dakota
National Geographic Traveler is the only magazine I subscribe to, and when it comes in the mail I check the contents immediately. What destinations did they write about this time? The newest issue came with several good articles, including "Zigzagging the Black Hills".I smiled when I read the article because it reminded me of our first big road trip with the boys (they were 6, 4 and almost 2 years old), although our itinerary varied a bit from Traveler's. It was a 9 hour drive from our house to Badlands National Park with 1 hour stops in Sioux Falls for a picnic lunch and in Mitchell to visit the Corn Palace. We arrived in the Badlands in time for a short hike before dinner. We decided to hike the window trail near the northeast entrance. The boys loved the climbing, and we had to hold on to our youngest who thought he could do whatever his brothers did. After dinner we did some more exploring. The striped sandstone hills were amazing to see as the sun set. If you don't have y

(Update - Info: 5/16) Road Trip Anyone?
Update: 5/16 It looks like it will be the first week of June for anyone who would like to go to Singing Oakes Gardens for a day of shooting. Daylilies needs a good week of warm/hot weather for the blooms to be at their best, and from looking at what is going on in my own garden, I am predicting the first Saturday in June for peak bloom. Have talked to Peg about a group showing up and spending a day, and she is fine with it. There will probably be a limit of about 12 individuals. So, … the first 12 who sends me a e-mail gets a slot. And, … it does not cost a thing! (Way cool) Will post a bit more on this get-together in the next 4 to 5 days. ** My e-mail address is in the toolbar to the right. You can go to the “search box” over on the right hand side, type in the word “daylily”, and you can see some of the images posted in this journal and/or info having to do with the daylily. __________________________________________ While Paul Lester and I we

      Road Trip
We're about to embark on our third official road trip since "babies make six". They've all been to Kentucky to see my side of the family. All of Clif's family lives close to us. This time our trip is for a party. My nephew is turning 1 this weekend. The trip is about 6 hours without kids and can vary from 6.5 - 8 hours with kids. Do you have any idea what it's like to pack and travel with 4 kids ages 3 and under?Yep. It's some kind of feat. I feel like an airline hostess for the entire trip.I have the rest of tonight and a few hours tomorrow night to pull this off. I would have had most of today, but we have 3 sick babies. Two of them went to the doctor today and got their little throats swabbed. They have an unnamed virus that is going around. Thank goodness it's not strep. However, last night was not fun. Tyler had been clingy and cranky all afternoon and evening, so he went to bed really early and ahead of his siblings. That never happens! Lauren woke up crying at 9pm and with

Road Trip (...well plane trip to Florida)!!
Two weeks ago Chrissy and I (Emilie) packed up the babies (and all their clothes, their strollers, their car seats and a further 24 kg of luggage) and went to Florida. A last minute deal to Orlando was more than we could resist, so with Mickey calling our names we headed South.Chrissy and Emma have been our most frequent playmates these past few months. What better way to mark the end of my maternity leave then by spending a week in the sun with our best pals. Chrissy's sister, Carolyn, and her friend Michelle, joined us with their two babies as well. It was a baby bonanza! We spent our days either shopping, or lazing by the pool and one day we even drove to Tampa to check out the zoo. A fantastic time was had by all.
