Midwinter Tales from the Riverbank - Ribblesiders Still Watching
Whilst things are quiet on the Save The Ribble front, as the Penwortham Green Belt and floodplain has been saved from the Riverworks proposals for a huge housing estate, designated instead a new Country Park by South Ribble Borough Council - exactly what local people were asking for! - and the Ribble barrage proposal "off the agenda" at Preston Borough Council - for the time being at least, Ribble

Riverbank's Fernandez blisters distance field at section championships
Runner sets top 3,200 mark this season By WILL DeBOARDwdeboard@modbee.com SACRAMENTO -- German Fernandez wanted to use the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at Friday's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Track and Field Championships as a test. Riverbank
A little known area in the Central Valley is Riverbank. Riverbank is divided into various sections, due to the Railroad Overpass going though the town. It has a small-town feel, yet has all the amenities of a larger town. One of the best theaters in the Central Valley, Galaxy 12 Theaters is located here, while home prices are very affordable. The schools provide a good-quality education, while effectively preparing students for the future of the real world. There is one major high school and one junior high and a few elementary schools. There is a large hispanic community, but the crime rate is pretty low and only minor gang issues throughout the area. Most of the restaurants are located along Patterson Road, which is the main thoroughfare for the city, and the median home price is $235,00

Catching up with Riverbank's German Fernandez
Today, we hear from one of the nation's top runners, German Fernandez of Riverbank. He is undefeated this year, claiming several course records including this past Saturday when he lowered the just freshly broken Willow Hills record of 15:56 by Del Campo's James Tracy to a jaw dropping 15:03! That victory marked German's 3rd Sac Joaquin Section championship in Div. IV making him what I believe is the first male 3 time sectional champion in any division. He will be a heavy favorite to win his 2nd State Meet Division IV race following his 2nd place finish last year to Big Bear's Chad Hall and his 1st place finish during his sophomore year in 2005. German is considered one of the favorites to win the national title this year along with Judge Memorial's (Utah) Like Puskedra.(Photo from this past Saturday is courtesy of Joe Hartman and dyestatcal.com)1) How did you get your start in running? In middle school, I ran Track and Field and noticed that I had potential and continued in

      Tales From The Riverbank...
Suddenly Summer is gone and Autumn has arrived, yet the ever-changing River Ribble and green spaces still offer us sources of rest and relaxation and contemplation...Thanks to all of you who have sent in your comments and stories and pictures and concerns, a selection of which we are including here...'A Walk by the River Ribble.Yesterday I walked by the river with my husband and little dog Skip. On our left, the river at low tide provided a feeding ground for a great variety of birds. On our right, a field of ripe golden barley, soon to be harvested. It is hard to believe that such a lovely rural area can be so close to a city. The river, the fields, the banks of the river with a rich variety of wild flowers, give the whole area a feeling of peace and rural tranquillity. On our walk we met many people like ourselves enjoying the calming influence of a little bit of rural England. This is the area on which Preston City Council are planning to build a large number of houses, plus

      Vietnam Riverbank apartments attractive, expensive
Marc Townsend, Executive Manager of CB Richard Ellis real estate consulting company, said: “In the next three to four years, the need for housing of Vietnamese people will rise highly, especially for apartments fronting rivers. The price of this kind of apartment may fluctuate between US$3,000 to $4,000/sq.m.” The price of riverbank apartments in HCM City depends on the infrastructure of each project. In the South Saigon area, apartments of the Him Lam-Kenh Te project currently have the highest prices, ranging from VND21-22 million ($1,300-1,370)/sq.m.

Tales and Pictures from the Riverbank
A visitor to Penwortham, Chris from Norfolk, sent in these pictures, saying he is so impressed by the beauty, and peace and quiet of the River and green spaces in the Broadgate, Penwortham, and Frenchwood areas which run along the beautiful River Ribble, he is looking to move here as soon as he can - as he says, 'Where else can people boast of having all this unspoilt beauty on their doorstep?'...Birds at low tide sunning themselves on the exposed stones of the river bed......and other Ribblesiders can be seen on the exposed flats of low tide enjoying this beautiful summer weather too...Ribbleside - space to breathe! Thanks Chris! The appreciation of the power and beauty and environmental integrity of the River Ribble, and the threat facing this magnificent agent of Nature, has caused many local residents to reflect on how they feel about the irreplaceable value of this area, and its own vital existence beyond the narrow and ill-conceived aims of economic gain.Aidan of Frenchwood sent

      Tales from the Riverbank
In keeping with the nautical them set by the Riversway Maritime Festival at the weekend, we couldn't resist this hilarous and also moving account of a canoe trip down the Ribble which Preston Ribblesider Darren told us about last summer, and, finally responding to our requests for a blog article about the trip at the time, sent it in to us this morning...' Mice 'n' MenLast summer, around about this time, my friend Neil and myself decided to take a canoe trip on the river. The mission was to head out toward the estuary near Lytham returning on the incoming tide alive and still smiling. We borrowed an old, battered, 12 foot Canadian canoe from a friend and headed to the concrete launch next to the sea cadets on strand road. With paddle in one hand and canoe in the other we tiptoed down the bank avoiding the dog turds and broken glass. After wading through a few feet of off -white scum we boarded our vessel and set forth. It was midday, not a cloud in the sky and the sun was beating do

      Tales From the Riverbank
More Ribbleside photographs, poetry and comments sent in by residents and Ribble-lovers... including a poem from the late 16th century...The Ribble's silt-laden spate waters at low tide rushing beneath Old Penwortham Bridge by Jabberwocky."We could hear the sound of the water as we approached the river and we took our time watching the river and the birds as we always do, and the fresh spring breeze blew the sound of the water over us. Tales from the Riverbank: Bob's Tale
Our earliest readers will remember Bob's extraordinary tale of how his life and career were very literally intertwined with the Ribble's Broadgate mudflats from the May 06 Tales From The Riverbank, and Bob has written to us about his recent return to the Ribble mudflats in Broadgate..."Good afternoon,I have just been looking at your blog of the rough weather on the river. This morning, on impulse, I climbed over the wall at Broadgate and made my first return to the river bed in forty-eight years. I took these pictures which shows that the river is not always a dirty muddy place. No doubt the storm water cleaned it all up, but I had an nostalgic half-hour walking up the river bed toward the New Bridge before the incoming tide made me turn back.On my return home, I wrote a one-page article on the river, opposing the barrage & contacted the Lancashire Evening Post asking if they would like to publish it. They have not replied yet... but here it is for the blog...THE RIVER RIBBLE, BROADG

      Views from the Riverbank
Thanks to everyone who sends in their comments, pictures and stories, more of which are here... the photos were taken over a short few weeks this Autumn, showing the Ribble in all her glorious variety! And we heard a very interesting story the other day about a popular local past-time in the 1920s or 30s of people jumping in the Ribble in their swimming costumes at the Docks on the out-going tide, and swimming to Lytham! If anyone has any stories about this or any other Tales from the Riverbank, we'd love to hear from you! This is a splendid view of the Ribble, from Ian, during an autumnal sunset... Redshank have returned to the mudflats in Broadgate and Penwortham - as have Teal, Shelduck, and Knot, amongst a number of other over-wintering species. JB. "We have lived by the river for 17 years now. We and all our neighbours love it here, largely due to the wildlife, smells of the river, the beautiful views from our living room windows and changing seasons. Not many people hav
