According to USDA projections, U.S. farmers will plant 86 million acres of corn in 2008. And yet, this year's corn planting won't be quite enough to "feed the world" while also satisfying demand for ethanol, i.e., feeding our cars. As a commodity broker recently declared, as reported by Delta Farm Press: ... we need more corn and the volatility in the corn market will continue. I think we need a minimum of 3 million more acres of corn. Rather than foul an additional 3 million of acres of land with corn -- a land mass roughly equal to three Rhode Islands -- how about we just pull the plug on the ethanol program? Just a thought from the Grist

The Rhode Island legislature is proposing the possibility of opening medical marijuana distribution centers so patients who take the drug for medicinal purposes wouldn't have to buy it off the streets, sometimes in dangerous situations and often at a high street market value. The story was reported Wednesday in the Newport Daily News and be found by clicking here. If the legislation passes, Rhode Island would become the third American state to have "centers" that distribute medical marijuana.

The performanceJust now I had the time to look through the photos I'd taken during the opening reception of robin's exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in munich where I've been last saturday. They are just a few since I was so busy talking to all the people I met there: Sabinah (robin's "wife" girlfriend quote: "The rock behind the rhode") and parts of her family, Robin's brother and his girlfriend from Southafrica, Robin's aunt and uncle, friend's I've been to the documenta with, Perry Rubenstein (who is very charismatic - see a picture here) and many others. The familyPart of the opening reception was a performace curated by Robin showing a dancer. Unfortunately I was so late, that I only had the chance to see the performance on a screen. The "original" place was so crowded that they didn't let any more people inside. But lucky me I met Robin and could see his performance standing next to him and experience all his excitement ;-) The guy who probably signed to most catalogue
Rhode Islanders pay higher auto insurance premiums than the national average, however, you can get cheap Rhode Island auto insurance quotes if you plan ahead, shop around, and get all the discounts you qualify for. Plan Ahead When it comes time to buy a new car, insurance costs should be part of your decision-making process. Some cars simply cost a lot less to insure because they are loaded with safety features or have proven to be statistically safer. Other cars may cost more to insure because they are more attractive to thieves. Consider the cost of insurance before you buy a car so you can cheaper insurance rates. Compare Insurance Costs Insurance quotes can vary widely from one insurance company to another, so it pays to shop for the cheapest quote. This doesn't mean you have to visit or even call all the insurance agents in town - who has time for that? Instead, use insurance comparison websites to get fast and accurate quotes from multiple A-rated insurance companies. An insu
Hello, Scrappers. It's Ted from A Price Above Bip Roberts, reporting for abbreviated weekend duty. You see, my mother's side of the family - mostly successful people, albeit batsh*t crazy - are convening in Rhode Island in a few hours for discussions about how my life has gone terribly astray and various other topics of salience. As such, I won't be around much this weekend. This was last minute, though; while I can't imagine anyone out there actually pining for my 'weekend series,' I did want to make note of why I won't be around for a bit.And now, time for a shameless personal plug. My site, the aforementioned Price Above Bip Roberts, has been doing a little thing this summer called 'The 100 Most 'Influential' People in Sports," with the hook being that you don't have to be influential whatsoever to make the list. Scrap even contributed a little ditty about David Eckstein for my MLB category week.Well, next week the category is going to be "Sports Possessions," as in jerse

In addition to making a few stops at Dunkin? Donuts while in Rhode Island, there are other must dos as well. Del?s frozen lemonade is a must have! You better not leave the state before having some. And don?t worry it?s not too hard to find, it?s almost as common as Dunkin? Donuts. Next you have to try a Hot Weener. Now I?m not sure what this is, but it was pretty good. They tell me it?s not a hot dog and that it?s not any kind of sausage. They top it with some other meet, onions, and some sauce. I guess it?s a Rhode Island thing, but it still doesn?t beat a Hot Hamburger in Clanton, Alabama. Lindsay insisted that I try a slush puppy (it?s just like a slurpee, but it?s no shave ice like in Hawaii). If you make it to Bristol stop by the Bristol House of Pizza. As for some of the best pizza I?ve had it was a big thanks to Lindsay and Lauren?s mom, grilled pizza on pita bread.
Once again another thanks to U.25 magazine and thanks to Lindsay in Bristol for contacting me. There
Oddly enough, in all the times I’ve made the trek from Rhode Island to Montreal, I’ve never actually stopped in Burlington, Vermont. This was no conscious decision on my part. Perhaps it was the victim of time constraints or just never taking the time to look at a map or … well I’m not really sure.
But having talked about the small Vermont city with a few friends who’d partaken in higher education and … [ahem] higher education there, it peaked my curiosity. So this time around, K and I decided it was a perfect stopping point on our way up to the land of moose and hockey (no, I don’t really believe that stereotype about Canada. I know they have maple syrup there too).
Burlington is a little more than half way between Rhode Island and Montreal. And it’s what you might expect of a small New England city - in the same vein as Portland, Maine or Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It’s quaint and easily walkable. The nearby lake brings
Robin Rhode's show at Perry Rubenstein gallery (I've written about it earlier), new york was reviewed in the New York Times yesterday. I'm really happy for him and his family who had all been in Ney York last week to support him. The articel written by Carol Kino is really funny to read especially when you know robin (which I do ;-).For the artist, this show is something of a departure. Now 31, he has been known primarily for performances, photographs and video animations in which he interacts in a remarkably realistic fashion with a two-dimensional drawing of some everyday object, like a bicycle or a car. This time, along with the photographic work, he is offering something quite different: his first 16-millimeter film; a long video made in collaboration with a dancer and a cellist; and several editioned sculptures, including a dozen abalone shells cast in chalk and charcoal [...]Jerry Saltz has been spotted hanging around at the galleries several times. Let's see what he's goin
if you're in new york city right now please be sure to attend the opening of the robin rhode solo exhibition tomorrow evening. The Berlin based and south african born artist (a friend of mine!) presents some new work in all three of the gallery's spaces (in chelsea). This exhibition marks Rhobin's anticipated return to New York since his debut at the gallery's inaugural exhibition in 2004. Primarily known for his performance-based works, animations and photographic series, Rhode consistently employs a wide variety of media to draw upon the sub-cultural codes of hip-hop, popular sports, film, and fashion. For this exhibition, Rhode will combine elements of performance, photography, film, drawing, and sculpture in a unique expansion of his inimitable artistic vocabulary, further proving his unique ability to create narratives with the most basic and accessible materials. Here, Rhode will present four new photographic works that advance key thematic elements such as racism and identity
A while back I wrote how I think most folks are bad tourists in their own hometown. I plead guilty. There’s so much to see and do here in New England - in Providence and Rhode Island included. Yet I gloss over most of it with the dismissive thought that it’ll always be there. What’s the hurry? I can see it tomorrow, right? But why should my hometown be any less interesting or exotic simply because it’s geographically closer to me than the Taj Mahal, Angkor Wat or the Pyramids? So, starting today I’m making a concerted effort to rediscover my hometown.
For the past two years, I’ve pared down all of my daily expenses - Starbucks coffee, my Martha Stewart Living subscription, etc. Sure, I could find a $200 per month room to rent in one of the many student accommodations (read: closets) near RISD or Brown. But I decided that I want to spend my last eighteen months really loving where I live. So last October, K and I moved into an incredible con
I receive several emails yesterday after my Sherwin Williams (SHW) post on Wednesday asking how I could be so sure the lower courts decision would eventually be tossed. I am going to direct you to a paper from the Washington Legal Foundation that eviscerates the lower court's handling of the case. It a matter of "when" not "if" this ludicrous ruling will get tossed. A note: The text below (except for the comments at the end beginning with "Sherwin's stock...") is taken from the paper and I have noted here what I feel are the most important sections for those of you who do not wish to read all 34 pages.
On a cold gray February day in 2006, a jury in Rhode Island found three companies liable for creating a “public nuisance.” In that case, styled as Rhode Island v. The State claimed that the manufacturers were responsible for creating a “public nuisance” in Rhode Island during t
America's smallest state is getting into the long line of states that are looking at increasing beer and other alcohol taxes as a way to boost revenue. The Rhode Island General Assembly is expected to consider a bill this session introduced by Rep. Edwin Pacheco that would add a penny to the cost of each 12 ounce brew sold in the state. The money from the tax increase would go to fund alcohol treatment and education programs. Rep. Pacheco says that long waiting lists at treatment facilities need to be reduced.Rhode Island estimates the tax increase will raise $2.3 million.
The American Real Estate Market is huge with a vast amount of competition, getting the real estate exposure can be a hard task. In marketing property the principles stay pretty much the same worldwide, what is needed is good exposure to the right people at the right time in the right place. How can this be achieved?A good example is with Rhode Island Real Estate and the methods used to obtain sales for property and real estate in this location. One of the most important methods is to use the search engines in ensuring that the RI Homes for Sale on the website get the best possible coverage. With a competitive market place the most important and crucial step is to remain one step ahead of the competition and this can be achieved with these methods.Another primary factor is to try to differentiate your Real Estate or Property business from the competition. Providence College and the University of Rhode Island have a history of tension. However, the aggression has now spilled over to include the Rhode Island mascot, Rhody Ram. The individual behind the guise was assaulted on his way out of the bathroom. URI President Robert Carothers reported,"He was coming out of the bathroom, and he was speared. A guy ran and put his head right up under his ribs, running, and so he knocked the wind out of him and his ribs were bruised. He wasn't hurt badly. But it was the general tone of what was happening there" This is one rivalry we can get behind. When fans start using the mascot's own moves against it, that is just pure tactical genius. Imagine the possibilities. A crazed fan sticks a pitch fork up the Blue Devil's ass...a shameless spectator lifts his leg and pisses on Smokey the dog. Good times.Related:Ram Mascot Attacked At Game
The nursing shortage in the United States is really pushing entities to try drastic measures to fill in the gaps. In Rhode Island, health service organizations are going so far as to hire from overseas, shelling out the costs of a recruitment firm plus overseas relocation expenses, and even paying the costs for the foreign recruit to obtain a practicing license in the States. Does this sound like throwing money away?
