Cet article montre quelques exemples concrets de réécriture d'urls grâce au module mod_rewrite du serveur web Apache.
Je pars ici du principe que le module est correctement installé sur le serveur et chargé en mémoire. Pour ceux qui ne sont pas sur un serveur dédié, sachez que la plupart des hébergeurs mutualisés propose cette option.
La configuration de mod_rewrite peut être mise à deux endroits différents. Soit directement dans la configuration du serveur, soit dans le fichier .htaccess du répertoire du site. Cette dernière solution sera généralement utilisée dans le cas d'un hébergement mutualisé.
Pour pouvoir se servir de la réécriture des urls, il faudra avant toute chose activer l'utilisation de ce module en ajoutant les lignes suivantes :

As some of you know, I completely changed the URL structure of this blog. I only got away with it because the this is a relatively recent blog and I don’t have that many inbound to specific posts yet.
For those of you who have well established Blogs/websites, and don’t have a lot of technical knowledge, or are not familiar with the Apache Mod_rewrite this might come in handy.
Principle nº 1: Don’t move posts unless it’s absolutely necessary.
If you have you have no choice, I suggest you go for a simple Mod_rewrite redirect that will do a clean redirect to the new location of the old post.
Simple .HTACCESS redirect:
1. Obtain all of the old Urls
2. Open your notepad and add the following line of code
Redirect 301 /old.php http://www.yoursite.com/newurl.php
3. Save the file and name it: .htaccess
4. Upload it to your server.
Redirection Rewriting a Rule
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^old.php$ newurl.php

As previously mentioned, the search engines see http://www.newmediaist.com and http://www.newmediaist.com/index.php as two different pages (although they may lead to the same content). This means that although they are actually the exact same content, from the search engine’s perspective both / and /index.php have their own ranking criteria (also known as “link juice” - backlinks, pagerank, etc…)
Now we don’t want to split up “link juice” between two pages, so we need to either 301 redirect all requests for /index.php to /, or visa versa. This can be done by a fairly simple addition to the .htaccess file.

I recently switched my hosting to NetFirms, as they are one of the few Canadian web hosting companies which allow you to host a number of domains on a single shared hosting account for free.
Netfirms does have its weaknesses though. Specifically, their mod_rewrite implementation is somewhat funky, resulting in almost every script needing a rewritten .htaccess file to get search engine friendly URLs working properly.
One script which has problems with Netfirms is Wordpress. If you are a Netfirms customer and can not get your Wordpress search engine friendly URLs to work properly, give the following .htaccess file a try

The most popular tool for URL optimization is the module mod_rewrite for the Apache web server. But mod_rewrite is notorious for its complexity. Even experienced programmers sometimes cannot understand it.
