      Reuse Existing Foundation?
Hi Richard! My wife found a property in a neighborhood she is particularly fond of but the house is trashed. Additionally, the additions that have been done over the years look like they were done with no thought to aesthetics or function. Our question is is it unreasonable to tear down the house and reuse the existing foundation? Does the cost of saving on the foundation outweigh the cost of having

      Reuse Fallen Leaves in Autumn
The Fall has arrived in many parts of the country. This means apple cider, pumpkin pie, acorn squash, cooler weather and, of course, thousands of falling leaves. Leaves may be beautiful when they're turning bright orange, yellow and red, but the beauty wears off when they're covering your lawn. Is there a way to reuse these leaves rather than bundle them up and send them to the dump? Yes.

      Hospitals Reuse One-Shot Medical Devices
In an attempt to cut costs and reduce medical waste, many hospitals are recycling single-use medical devices ranging from scissors and scrubs to the blades surgeons use to saw through bones. The practice is legal as long as certain FDA guidelines are followed. But the practice has raised concerns about safety. Medical device makers say their single-use products pose a higher risk of failure and harm when recycled. Products labeled for single use are usually not designed to hold up to harsh sterilization chemicals and processes. Even when the devices are sterilized, blood, tissue or other bodily fluids remaining on porous surfaces could allow transmission of viral and bacterial infections, according to device makers.

Make Less Waste in San Francisco this Holiday Season - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
San Francisco may recycle more of its waste than any City in the US - resulting in 65% overall diversion of waste from the landfill. But during the holiday season, even San Franciscans are prone to create their (more than) fair share of excess waste. I don’t remember where I read this, so don’t quote me on this… but I believe that in the U.S., we create up to 4 tons of waste just from the wrapping and packaging of holiday presents every year. That figure doesn’t even take into account the gazillions of toys that break the day after Christmas or the kazillions of somewhat useless gifts that are given and sit on a shelf until they eventually end up in the trash can. But, there are lots of ways that you can help be a part of the solution and not the problem. Here’s just a few ideas: Send e-cards this year - Sending electronic greetings can greatly reduce the amount of paper that gets wasted during the holidays. While they may seem less person

      Moby à l’origine d’une initiative généreuse

Green Design - Reuse and Rejuvenate
As mentioned in my previous post, there are other great ways to reuse and rejuvenate, this time, decorative items, in the kitchen! I've seen many well worn tables and chairs in my time, dining furnishings that have done their job, taken a beating, and often, are best retired, to be donated or handed down to others for renewed appreciation.  Therefore, again, the answer is not always to buy new! Instead, buy a new table and antique chairs, or vice versa. Look at these beauties that jumped into my email today, from 1st dibs.com.   Same for lighting...the hunt is what's fun. In thrift shops, flea markets, special antique events, shops, on vacation. Consider buying vintage, antique, for a natural patina an item can only get from time.  Take a look at this image of a kitchen I designed with vintage lighting and tell me it doesn't enhance the whole kitchen! 10 Ways to Reduce And Reuse
October 15th is Blog Action Day, when thousands of bloggers band together to write about a single important issue: the environment. A Penny Closer decided to join in the effort to help raise awareness in our own little way; by showing how frugality and earth-friendly actions often go hand in hand. Reducing your household waste not only helps the environment but it can help save you money, too. Imagine how much money and garbage bin space you might save if you could use items you typically dispose of to fill a household need. Even the act of throwing away trash can cost money! For instance, some places may charge you for throwing away more garbage than their preset amount, not to mention the added expense of having to buy more garbage bags. If everyone would find ways to reuse the things they would normally throw away, or choose durability over the convenience of disposability, we could make a real difference. Not only would we be helping the environment by reducing our impact on l

Plastic, part one: you CAN reuse plastic water bottles!
Glenn and Jeremy have recently posted about the hypocrisy of bottled water. This is something that has been on my mind a lot recently as well. I did a post last summer about bottled water vs. tap in linke to a great article in E Magazine. To recap: it has been determined in studies that bottled water has no great nutritional value than tap; for the price of one bottle of Evian you get 1,000 gallons of tap water; every year 1.5 million barrels of oil are used to make plastic water bottles; and only five percent of plastic water bottles are recycled. After reading the article, I vowed to stop drinking bottled water. I ordered a reusable water bottle online only to find that the filter contained some bad chemicals and it was only for emergency use. I gave up and since then have done, well, nothing. But those downhere guys got me fired up again. Jeremy concluded that he would reuse his plastic water bottles. I got ready to warn him. I had read in several different places tha

To reuse potting soil or not?
There is a debate waging in gardening circles over the common practice of discarding potting soil in favour of fresh material every time a gardener transplants or repots a plant. Even Marie Iannotti is polling gardeners as to their use and re-use of potting mix. Jeff Ball from Gardening and Yardening has rebutted the timeless advice offered by many a gardening expert, instead choosing to renew his potting mix and reuse it. But is it wise to counter expert opinion and go against the grain of traditional thinking? At AllExperts.com, another subsidiary of About.com, resident gardening expert James L. Crowder is an obvious proponent of dumping used potting mix and advising gardeners to use fresh. In one piece of advice to a fellow gardener who was requesting suggestions for a struggling tree, Crowder finishes his response with "If you can repot it, throw away the old soil, don't reuse it.". Without reading the question one might assume that the querying gardener has soil-borne problem

We just had snow last week and now this week we hit 72 degrees. Yeah!.The only problem is that now the mosquitoes are already out looking for blood.Definitely need to add "Off" to my grocery list.Well, I moved my log in link to the middle of the homepage of Grocerywiz.com. My hope is that this will remind visitors to log in when they first get to the site so they can reuse their last saved grocery list.I'm worried that visitors will forget to log in and and have to start with a new list from scratch. The whole idea of logging into the site is to be able to save the list for the next time you have to go to the store.I know how easy it is to forget to log in into the site. I have done it many times. Worst yet, I will have half my list created and realize I haven't logged in yet, bummer.

      Reuse, Reduce, Recycle
My block has a recycle chute, which is just next to the usual rubbish chute. It is finally in operation on 6 December, after months of very noisy works. It’s so convenient now! I don’t have to collect all the recyclables at home and wait for the collection center staff to come every 2 or 3 weeks.I found out that we are the ONLY block in Singapore to have this recycle chute. If I did hear correctly, for the region too! It’s a pioneer project. Just like the rubbish chute we have in the estate. It’s a pioneer project too. The refuse truck doesn’t come to collect the waste. It’s being sucked out to somewhere else. Good huh? No foul smell.哥哥 asked me about the recycle chute and I told him, we must help protect the environment by throwing recyclables in that chute. Guess what he said? “Oh! I know already! Reuse, Reduce, Recycle! Bob (the builder) taught me already!”
