Research firm NPD has been tracking the meteoric rise of iTunes among music retailers since it broke the top ten sellers in the third quarter 2005. It entered the rankings at number seven behind Circuit City, FYE, Amazon.com, Target, Best Buy, and Wal-Mart. Data from NPD, which tracks retail sales in the US, showed that by the first quarter of 2007, iTunes had upset all but Wal-Mart and Best Buy, establishing a comfortable position in third. The Retailer's Role In Quality Retailing
By: fibre2fashion The Indian retail industry is thriving today. There is stiff competition among Indian and foreign retailers to attract customers and retain them. In this tug-of-war, quality retailing has emerged as the solution. The retailer who provides quality products and services along with a quality shopping experience succeeds in the long run.The quality of the product offered by the retailer has two aspects – the perceived quality and the actual quality. Perceived quality or point of sale quality refers to the image that the customer has about the product while buying it. The actual quality or the point of use quality is the quality of the product that the consumer experiences while using it. The retailer plays a very important role in building up perceived quality with the use of attractive display. The retailer is in direct contact with the customers and so he can play a significant part in helping the manufacturer reduce the gap between actual and perceived quality. The r

Most e-commerce websites focus on increasing their traffic rate, but it’s just as important to convert this traffic into actual customers. After all what is the point oh attracting visitors who make no or very few purchases. We aren’t talking here just about products, we are talking about services too. This is the point of view shared by Jack Love, Publisher of Internet Retailer Magazine. He states that : If your web site is converting to buyers 3% of shoppers who visit it, congratulations—you’re hitting the average conversion rate for retail web sites. But think how much more money your site would make if you could just double that rate. You’d get twice the online revenue from the same number of visitors, same investment in marketing, and same web staff. The incremental ROI would go off the charts.[…]  We think doubling of conversion rates should be an indus

Fine Wine Retailer Found a Way to Offset its Co2
In an article from Small Biz, an online winery found a way to offset its carbon emissions and boost its eco-cred. J.J. Buckley Fine Wines, an online wine retailer, based in Oakland, California wanted to offset all (if not most) of its co2 emissions and in order to do this, first they had to find out how much was their annual greenhouse gas output. It took them all of two months to find this out, with the help of FedEx and UPS they were able to determine the energy output of their wine bottle shipments. They then looked into their warehouse and headquarters operations and what emissions were being created there. In all they pay CarbonFund.org, a carbon reduction organization, $2,000 monthly to offset a great deal of their Co2 emissions and besides being socially-responsible, this also helps set them apart from their competition. Amazon Invests in Indie Music Retailer
Amazon is one of the first investors in a service called Amie Street. They sell digital music for indie bands. Here’s an interesting business model. You can download a song free at first but the more popular the song gets the more you will pay per download. Up to 98 cents maximum that is. It doesn’t say how much the artists will make. You can earn credits for downloads by recommending songs to other people and getting them to download indie music. The startup is a bit of an indie company themselves. It was founded in 2006 by three Brown University students. Amazon is going to compete with iTunes soon by launching its own music store sometime this year. Well at least you know that indie music downloads on EZ-Tracks are always free. Look at our selection of indie music - and yes, share your favorites with friends!

      Clothing retailer for refugees
The Japanese owned and run design house Uniqlo have come up with a unique idea in order for them to get onto the green bandwagon. The company who have branches in the Japan, UK and the USA are making space available in their stores for people to bring their old and discarded cloths and shoes, these are then sent to a depot where they can be distributed to refugee camps, where the clothing will be needed urgently, as but by their nature these people come into our countries with literally only the clothes that they are standing up in. Not all of the clothing will be desired, as some items are bound to be unbearable, but these will not go to waste as they will be recycled for fuels or even insulation products. Another Sunny Summer Season Retailer
Although it’s currently trading at an expensive, growth style P/E of 35.1x this year’s earnings, Oakley (OO) is still another great way to play the Summer season. Consumers rush to the stores and buy up on the “must have” sunglasses, and Oakley is one of the best ways to play the future retail success. Just off of the 52 week high of $25.50, which was set on 4/20/07, the stock closed down $-0.42 to end at $24.55 per share. The stock is trading off of recent lows set in March and early April of about $20. The main reason behind the move is directly related to Oakley’s first quarter results that came in well above estimates. Earnings came in at 8 cents per share versus consensus estimates of 3 cents per share. Sales climbed to $199.2 million from $151.7 million. The only truly negative sentiment connected to the stock is the CEO’s majority stake in the company, and the inability for investor influence on the company. Ultimately, all the decisions are

It is announcing its Q4 and year-end results this Thursday and I think you should buy this stock ahead of the earnings. Here is why:DSW specializes in designer footwear and buys from over 300 brands including Kenneth Cole, Via Spiga, Calvin Klein, Gucci and Addidas. Their business model allows them to sell such footwear at 20% to 50% less than department stores. The company's inventory system allows it to sell 80% of its inventory without markdowns and keep the merchandise turn-over at over 4 times a year, double the turn-over at department stores. A typical store carries over 30,000 pairs of shoes and runs a successful loyalty program with over 6 million members. In addition to its own stores, DSW runs 240 leased departments for other retailers, including Stein Mart. In fact, starting January, DSW became the exclusive

      A Great Retailer...
Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) is very good at what they do. I am clearly not their customer and that's OK. If I only bought apparel retailer stocks that appeal to your average late 30s professional dad, I would be limited to a very short list.ANF showed up in my latest shrinking P/E ratio screen. This time I focused on stocks that have performed well the past year but, at the same time, have seen a steady decline in their P/E ratio. ANF's stock price is up 34% in the past year, but it should probably be up even more than that. The industry average P/E ratio is around 20 while ANF is valued at a puny forward P/E of just 14. This despite the fact that ANF is growing revenues and earnings much more quickly than the industry average. Not to mention that ANF has better margins than the industry average and a very healthy balance sheet.I haven't forgotten that the focus of this portfolio is supposed to be short term and technically-based picks. And, wouldn't you know it- I love ANF'

A one-time London cabbie and hotel cleaner who now runs one of the most profitable retailers in the Middle East, has emerged as a possible contender in the £2bn battle for fashion chain New Look, reports the Sunday Times. The Friendly Local Retailer Myth.
All "friendly local retailers", are local but not all "friendly local retailers" are friendly. I was just over on GVs catching up with various gardening blogs when I came across an entry by Trey, owner of The Golden Gecko Garden Center. On his blog (thegoldengecko.blogspot.com) he's criticizing Home Depot for their latest ad campaign that tries to brand HD as the "friendly local retailer." I'm not sure Trey has much to worry about because I don't think anyone will ever really buy into the idea, but what I don't agree with is how he puts local retailers on a pedestal. In my 29 years I've only been in one local retailer that lived up to the myth of the "friendly local retailer." It was a few years back and it was a garden center in N. Arizona and the proprietors of the place where straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting and treated me like I was royalty even though I was only there to buy a couple of plugs for a container garden. They even laughed at my dumb joke of just being the
