The Job I Leave Off My Resume: Chapter 4
This is a 4 part series (yes, I know at first I said 5 part . . . I have paragraph counting issues apparently) about a job I once had as a nurse in an abortion clinic. This is not meant to be a political statement or a forum for debate, only a recording of my experiences. Of course this is a sensitive subject, and I respect everyone's views. As I got into the routine of working at the clinic I was actually proud of the job I did. I was making a difference in what kind of experience these women had, and helping them through it. There will always be termination of pregnancy, legally and safely . . . or not. There is no reason for it to be more of a terrifying painful experience than necessary. I discovered though that I needed to let go of my own preconceptions about women who have abort

Resume Writing in the Computer Age
In this modern age of computers, resume writing had never been faster and more efficient. Gone were the days when you had to go to the post office to mail an application. All you ever do is sit in your computer, upload your resume using the employer's web site or send your resume to them by email. Nowadays, sending your resume by mail or fax has virtually become non-existent as most employers now opt to use programs to scan submitted resumes to determine whether you are a match for an available position. Still, resume print-outs are needed during interviews making it absolutely necessary that the emailed format and print-out are presentable. More people are familiar with the conventional resume format, but when it comes to using electronic resumes are at a loss. Resume Writing Tips When S

This is a 5 part series about a job I once had as a nurse in an abortion clinic. This is not meant to be a political statement or a forum for debate, only a recording of my experiences. Of course this is a sensitive subject, and I respect everyone's views. I quickly learned that the clinic was a pretty informal environment. My first staff meeting was opened with a fellow nurse asking "We need to be more consistent around here in recognizing each other's milestones, I mean, who do I need to screw around here to get a birthday cake?"I adored her immediately. The predominant feeling in the clinic was one of concern for the patients. At the hospital I found some health care workers cared, others did not. At the clinic every decision that was made was first considered from the patient's point

Great news for Chef Symon and Cleveland in general, but what does this have to do with employment law? According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the Food Network fired the show's prior host for resume fraud: Symon is stepping in at "Dinner: Impossible" after the St. Petersburg Times revealed in early February that original host Robert Irvine exaggerated a wee bit on his resume. Like that bit about cooking for England's royal family. And being a White House chef, among other things. Resume fraud is a big problem for employers that largely goes undetected. Business Resume Tips
For most job-seekers, the resume is the only way to get your foot in the door. Unfortunately, the employer probably gets so many resumes, that he barely has time to read through them all. This makes getting a foot in the door extremely difficult. What usually happens is that human resources will do an initial screening of all resumes sent in. Those that pass the initial HR screening may go to the hiring manager, who will scan the resumes and pick out the ones that seem to be a good fit for his needs. After this process, a more thorough screening will be done to select candidates that might be called for a phone interview. Once a job-seeker gets that phone call, the importance and weight of the resume starts to drop in comparison with the more personal communications. Therefore, the goal of

Why You Need To Use A Resume Instead Of A Job Application
A resume is needed over the job application is because it is a presentation of who you are. In short, it is an advertisement. You are the product. It includes achievements instead of just "duties" and provides a lot more room for your information compared to the small section found on a job application form. A job application includes information that would not be appropriate to list on a resume such as references, reasons for leaving a job, salary information and mailing addresses for each employer, to name a few. Resumes have been in existence for several decades, probably right after WWII, and were certainly a lot less complicated than they are these days. They were not as much of a critical part of the job search process as they are now. Many jobs, such as blue-collar trades, nurse

Those are just two of the signs that you probably need a new resume, but there are many more. You need a new resume when you: 1. Graduate from college. 2. Change careers. 3. Formatting a Resume for Internships
Everyone has an opinion about formatting a resume. Some people like education listed at the top; some like education listed at the bottom. Some like hobbies included; some don’t. Here are the important points no matter what resume format you use: 1) Make sure that your resume has no spelling or grammar mistakes. 2) Only capitalize proper nouns. 3) Have someone unfamiliar with your information read your resume to ensure that everything makes sense. 4) Go for ease of reading above all else – don’t use several different fonts and other fancy elements that muddy the readability. 5) If you have a passion, there should be items on your resume that indicate this passion. 6) Mak

Your Resume: A Job By Any Other Name …
This weekend I saw the new movie “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.” In the movie a destitute governess plays along as if she is the person sent to fill the position of social secretary to a young woman. What’s interesting about the switch from governess to social secretary is that the skills Miss Pettigrew uses are basically the same in both jobs: applying common sense to the organization and behavior of someone else who – either due to a very young age or to a particular personality – is incapable of doing these things for herself/himself. This re-direction of the same skills has much to do with your figuring out how skills you now have – from photocopying book manuscripts to entering expenditures in a computer program – can be applied in a new job or situation that yo

      Career: Internship Resume 101
In the previous post in the career section I have tried to outline the difference between a Resume and a CV. Now its time to know a little bit more about 'resumes'. For a revision purpose a resume is a document, usually one page in length which serves as an introduction to prospective employers. A Curriculum Vita on the other hand is much more descriptive and is usually at least 3 pages in length.Internship Resume vs Normal ResumeNow, whenever students search for sample resumes online they find themselves baffled. That is because they actually look at normal resumes and not internship resumes. Normal resumes are meant for individuals who already have a good amount of work experience. However, we cannot expect that fresh graduates would have that much work experience. So fresh graduates usu

      Career: CV vs Resume
It is surprising that being a Business Administration student I did not know the difference between a CV and a resume until some time ago. Then I decided to ask my friends about this, and know what, none of them knew the difference.Basically the primary differences between a resume and a curriculum vitae (CV) are the length, what is included and what each is used for. A resume is a one or two page summary of your skills, experience and education. While a resume is brief and concise - no more than a page or two, a Curriculum Vitae is a longer (at least two page) and more detailed synopsis.A Curriculum Vitae includes a summary of your educational and academic backgrounds as well as teaching and research experience, publications, presentations, awards, honors, affiliations and other details.

When Your Company Got Acquired, You May Want to Be Getting Your Resume Out There.
In the current market, its not unusual to see companies acquired by another. What should employee of acquired company has to concern about is also important. Typically when a larger company buys a smaller company it is because the smaller company has an asset that the larger company wants. The typical scenario is that the larger company takes over, integrates the acquired technology badly into their business and fires most of the better employees in the smaller company. Management can pretty much do what ever they want. How they do it mostly depends on the type of take over. In many cases they eliminate whole departments which gives them the reason for laying off or firing workers - no longer a need for them. They can always open a new department with a different title but provides the same functions, just with new people. Not being a hostile take over, that may not be the case. How to write a winning resume!!!
Resume writing is a very difficult task. I can safely say so after having created many for my own job hunts as well as my graduate school applications! Just to bring everybody out of their cozy little beds (taking cue from the previous post), experts say that one should never try and follow the normal rules which define the art of resume writing (particularly those which you get to hear through the grapevine). The biggest challenge is to realize the simple fact that at present, the resumes that we have are probably grossly inadequate to foment a winning impression. So simply scrap them and start anew. A resume should be treated like an advertisement. It has to serve its purpose of getting you your dream job interview call or your admission into an educational program....without that, it is just a piece of waste paper or worthless word document which most definitely belongs to the recycle bin! Most often, the resume acts as the best possible means to showcase your communication skills.
