Responsible Parenting in Modern TimesThe advent of the new millennium has brought with it a large number of technological achievements that have made people’s lives easier. Unfortunately, it has made our lives so easy that it became second nature to delegate most tedious and manual tasks to machines and equipment, which is not a bad thing except in cases where even parental responsibility falls

Close to 45 million American families own a pet dog. As a pet, dogs the number one most favorite pet and just behind them are cats and birds as the country's preferred pet and companion. With the increasing number of families that choose to adopt a dog of varying breeds, there's also been an entire industry that's sprung about to support this demand. But there's more to owning a dog and caring for it than fancy toys, stylish dog beds and other paraphernalia. A dog owner needs to not only take care of his dog and look after his basic needs, but also be a responsible dog owner. Here are some things you can do as a responsible dog owner to give your pet the best life he can have, while also making sure that your neighbors aren't disturbed by him. Be aware of your dog's health. This doesn't me

Someone thinks so..... Is Michelle Obama responsible for the Jeremiah Wright fiasco? - By Christopher Hitchens - Slate Magazine What can it be that has kept Obama in Wright's pews, and at Wright's mercy, for so long and at such a heavy cost to his aspirations? Even if he pulls off a mathematical nomination victory, he has completely lost the first, fine, careless rapture of a post-racial and post-resentment political movement and mired us again in all the old rubbish that predates Dr. King. What a sad thing to behold. And how come? I think we can exclude any covert sympathy on Obama's part for Wright's views or style—he has proved time and again that he is not like that, and even his own little nods to "Minister" Farrakhan can probably be excused as a silly form of Chicago South Side po

In what seems to be a deceptive maneuver to many in both the medical and the publishing fields, Merck acknowledged that it has been known to hire outside professional writers to develop research-related documents that eventually get published under the name of reputable leaders in the medical community. Critics are expressing doubt about the validity of the research and about the actual involvement of the scientists listed as authors of the papers. One especially galling example is that of the paper being developed as solid academic research but the lead writer is listed as “External author.”
Dr. Joseph S. Ross, of New York’s Mount Sinai School of Medicine, came across the apparently ghostwritten research studies while reviewing documents related to lawsuits filed against

We all know that parenting is a very hard task and an endless obligation. I am a father for almost 12 years and I can say that it is more than being a good provider. But responsible parenting can also be applied to blogging and doing this can make us more effective as a blogger. Although some of you are not yet parents, I believe you still can understand their duties and apply them when you are blogging. By enumerating some of their major responsibilities, let us find out how they can be useful towards effective blogging.Proper CommunicationThis is more than just a simple conversation. From a North County Times story as noted on the L.A. Tell me, however does stripping in a movie make you a mature, responsible actress? Apparently Lindsey Lohan thinks so, the daft sucker! You would think that women like Dame Judi Dench and Helen Mirren were crazy to take the long hard route to superstardom ignoring something like stripping for their roles which could have made them respectable actors.Lilo actually went and replicated Marilyn Monroe’s photo shoot as well on the February cover of New York. Now Marilyn Monroe may not be though of as a mature actress but what she did have going for her was oodles of charisma and beauty that was nearly flawless. The world gasped when Lohan attempted to copy this timeless beauty. No amount of cosmetic surgery would be able to make Lindsey Lohan equal to a Helen Mirren or a Marilyn Monroe. Why? B
The organism largely responsible for chronic bad breath, or halitosis, is Solobacterium moorei.
Persistent bad breath is often caused by the breakdown of bacteria in the mouth, which produces foul-smelling sulfur compounds. A study of 21 people with chronic bad breath and 36 subjects without the problem found that S. moorei was present in every patient who had halitosis. Only four of the people without bad breath had the bug -- and those four all had periodontitis, an infection of the gums that can also lead to chronically bad breath.
The same team of investigators also found that brushing twice a day with antibacterial toothpaste and using a toothbrush with a built-in tongue scraper can eliminate chronic bad breath.
Who bears the responsibility for testing changes in your organization?
It seems like a simple question, but answering it depends on a number of variables. When we have asked this question at IT’s About Uptime, we have received a number of questions in response:
What system is being changed?
What type of change needs to be made?
Is the [...]

If you're like a lot of people living in the U.S. today, you probably haven't saved nearly as much as you can or should at this point in your life. Whatever the reason may be -- and there are plenty of reasons or excuses -- saving money is a discipline that too many of us have ignored, forgotten, or never learned. Overall, the working population in our country has recently been experiencing a negative annual savings rate. A negative savings rate simply means we are spending more money than we earn, and we're borrowing the money to make up for the shortfall. The U.S. economy has long been known and admired as one of the greatest consumer economies in the world. We are privileged to live in "the land of opportunity." But we have also become accustomed to believing that opportunity is somethi

The lash inflicted by this scourge currently threatens the national security interests of great states like the United States of America.

Alan Colmes asked an interesting question in the interview of Jerald Aust as it pertained to the controversy with Barack Obama’s pastor. Is Obama responsible or accountable for what Jeremiah Wright said? As I said Jerald Aust mostly danced around it not wanting to get dragged into that. I’ll take a stab at it though. Of course Barack is not responsible. He didn’t speak the words. He is not accountable in the same sense. However it strains credulity to believe, as Barack states, that he had no idea those statements were said and that Mr. Wright held those views. He’s been a member there for over 20 years, was married by him and had his daughters baptized by him. It’s simply unbelievable that he had no idea. In the sense that it is reasonable to believe that someone who listened to

Teaching responsibility is one of the most difficult aspects of parenting. It is here that parents most often worry about the dilemma of stifling individual choice versus inculcating values and habits that lead to appropriate behavior. The political parallel of that dilemma is the reasonable desire for maximum individual freedom, but the need that arises to respect the rights of others. The way out of the dilemma is to recognize that healthy self-interest and respect for others not only do not conflict but reinforce one another.Being 'responsible' in the most fundamental sense of that term means 'being the cause of or the agent that produced some effect'. Recognizing that the causes we initiate lead to good or bad consequences is part of a view of responsibility called 'logical consequences'.Connecting the child's chosen actions with consequences for the child allows him or her to make the connection by choice, rather than being imposed from the outside. When that is done, the co

But, did you know that a passenger who knowingly rides with an intoxicated person can be held responsible for the passenger's own injuries or death arising from a drunk driving accident?
Yes, it's true. A case decided last October by the Washington Court of Appeals affirmed a jury's decision to hold a passenger 35% responsible for her own injuries after accepting a ride from a driver she knew to have consumed alcohol earlier in the evening.
In the case of Hickly v. Bare, 135 Wn. App. 676 (October 2006), the driver admitted to consuming at least

Think back. Remember awhile back when we had that story about the old woman that attacked a Comcast office with a hammer because they wouldn’t switch her phone service over to Verizon? Go on, click the link if you want the details, I’ll wait.
The woman, Mona Shaw, appeared on Good Morning America today according to Consumerist. Not too exciting right? Comcast might not have thought so either, because Comcast cable subscribers in Shaw’s hometown are saying that ABC went black on them during the piece.
Coincidence? Why, surely.

There is no time like the Holiday Season to really instill some monetary values into our children. As soon as those letters to Santa start getting drawn up, we know we haven't got a chance. Ponies, Xbox, Plasma TVs, whatever big ticket item that the kids want, we can never get, so how do we teach them about this? How can this be a learning experience? The best defense is to start with your kids early on, by 3 or 4, they are ready to start understanding money and costs, but even if you are starting later, all kids can benefit from an understanding of finance and money. Most kids will understand money better if they have some of there own. If your kids aren't already getting an allowance, start now. A good rule of thumb is .50$ for each year of age per week. Please, make your kids do SOMETHING for that money, they need to understand that it is EARNED. Make them save a portion of it in a piggy bank or in a real bank savings account, so they can learn that it will grow over time. The idea

It's probably the first thing that most parents will say whentheir kids ask for a family pet, especially a dog? Most of uswith dogs in the family have either said it, or can recall itbeing said to us some time ago. But it's safe to say thatquestion isn't just for kids. Any dog owner, or a potentialcanine parent, should ask this of themselves. The thing is, eventhough the World Wide Web is a great tool for researching "allthings doggy", oftentimes too much information can beoverwhelming. You've probably come across lists of 100 (or more)tips for responsible dog ownership. As dog lovers, we think the abundance of resources on doggyownership is great, but we also come from the school of keepingit simple. Because even though there are definitely somestandards of care to uphold, many issues relating to dog careare relative and depend on breed a
Well, he beat it anyway. And it took him about five minutes, too. In what turned out to be not all too much of a cipher challenge after all, something called the Cipher Challenge has come to a screeching halt.
Competing against the famous British code-breaking Colossus computer, which took a full 14 years to rebuild and get up-and-running again, amateur code breakers were put up against the world’s first programmable digital computer in a contest to see who would be fastest at breaking an encrypted message generated by the original Lorenz cipher machine used by the German High Command during World War II. Well the results were, let us say, sub-optimal. At least for Mr. Colossus they were. He got KO-ed, lost big time, got the tubes knocked out of him. And he lost to somebody using some homemade computer code, too, somebody who calls himself Joachim Schüth, of all names, who lives in a country called Germany, of all places. Why that sneaky little German computer geek freak, or
We salute you, Veterans. We acknowledge what you poured out on behalf of our country. Today we'll try to "grow up" and soberly recognize that so much of what we have and enjoy- peace and safety- you all played a part in delivering it to us.Yesterday at church, our pastor asked all veterans to stand so we could honor them. In the row ahead of me, a young man was sitting next to two older gentlemen. These two older men, veterans, shakily tried to stand up. One started to stand but almost fell back, and the young man next to him reached out, put an arm behind him, and helped raise him up to standing position. He kept his arm there, protectively, supportively, lest the veteran start to fall backwards. You have the right to be a bit unsteady on your feet when you've lived a long life, fought in wars, done your part to bring a measure of peace to this world, or even to just your tiny corner of the world. But it's time to stop falling backwards if age, exhaustion, valor and courageous acts

My blogging friend Lewis has raised some very interesting questions about the need to do more about education in this country."So where is the outcry? Why isn't education more of a rallying cry for new ideas, better teachers, better pay for good teachers and involved parents? What can be done to change the coarse (sic) of what appears to be a cultural crisis? What can we do to make a difference in education?"My first question back is: Why is it my responsibility to help those who do not want to try? We all think slavery is wrong, and it is, so we cannot force someone to learn who does not want to. Maybe we need to make parents responsible for their kids entire life support. Then they might push them a little harder. If you have to pay when your kids wreck the car you make sure they have insurance, training, and know what happens if they mess-up. I went to school. I studied hard. No one forced me to get a good education. I ended up with a PhD in biology from Caltech. Ther

Jen, over at Fuzzy Logic, has started giving out a new award, The Responsible Pet Blogger award, and I’m honored to be one of the first bloggers named as a Responsible Pet Blogger.
Here’s what Jen says about why she started the award:
What does it mean to be a responsible pet blogger? Well, here is my opinion. It means that when you write a post for your blog, as a guest blogger or write a comment on someone else’s blog, you do so with respect for all creatures. It may mean that you strive to educate others on your pet “ownership”, or that you share your life with your animals on your blog.
It means that you understand that pet parenting means different things to different people and that there is more that one way to care for our animal companions.
Check out Fuzzy Logic to read more about the Responsible Blogger Award and to see who else is on the list.
Thanks, Jen!

It was only a matter of time before a politician , and I would have correctly guessed a Democrat, would blame global warming for the wildfires in California. Today Harry Reid did just that.
“One reason why we have the fires in California is global warming,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Tuesday, stressing the need to pass the Democrats’ comprehensive energy package.
If we only pass the Democrats plan we will have no more fires. This man is disgraceful, can you imagine using something like this to push a political agenda? With so many people losing everything they own, and so many others facing the horror that they may also lose everything, Harry Reid thinks this is a great opportunity to push his agenda.
Harry Reid placed his Democrat agenda ahead of the people who are suffering. Isn’t the Democrat party supposed to be the party of the little people? It sounds like they care more about votes here, screw the people that lost their homes, we h

They say, if you don't know how to take care of a dog,you won't be a good parent to your children at all. Probably, such a strong phrase to prove but don't doubt it, when you havea dog for a pet, responsibilities and expenses in keeping yourpet healthy and happy are two fundamentals that you always needto bring about towards your pet dog. The questions that you ask yourself prior to owning a dog willfill the responsibilities needed to keep one. They are not justanimals, these creatures need understanding, attention and love.Unless you have time for your dog, don't just instantaneouslybuy or adopt one if you are not ready to share your time withyour pet. Aside from giving a dog its food and bath, are you up for thedaily walks that your dog will need? People who tend to fall fora puppy's cuteness alone fails to look
Shortly after leaving my consulting job I got a position within the same industry that required much less travel. After a few months at my new job an old work acquaintance (let’s call him David) contacted me to see how I was doing. I explained that I liked the new position with this smaller company and he asked if I could get him an interview.
David said he was a newlywed now and had a baby on the way. He needed to slow or eliminate his traveling. He said that he really needed a new job as soon as possible because he would have to quit the consulting lifestyle when the baby came in just a few months. He sounded like he really needed help. His resume looked good so I agreed to pass along it along to my new boss.
Mistake #1 - Passing along a resume for a guy I barely knew to my brand new employer.
I told my manager that I hadn’t worked with David much but the experience I did have working with him was positive. My manager reviewed the resume, noticed he
Last January here in Denver we endured a miserable series of storms and much higher than usual snowfall. About 45 miles north of Denver on a county road that’s half exurb/half country, high schoolers Tyler Carron and Nikko Landeros had the unfortunate luck of a flat tire on their Isuzu Trooper, and found themselves wrenching off lug nuts in the dark, cold night. Tragically, classmate Michelle Berra then careens into the back of the Trooper. All survived, but Carron and Landeros both lost their legs.
Today I read this headline in the Rocky Mountain News: “Teens who lost legs in accident sue Isuzu”
I immediately thought “poor distraught family needs someone to sue” and labeled them as wanting someone to blame and angrily searching for trivial design flaws. You constantly hear stories of teens driving carelessly, distracted by other occupants, and injuring and killing each other, pedestrians, and cyclists. To me, the many many teen driving a

From Ryan Garko's blog (Ryan Garko has a blog?), he takes credit for Peralta homering last night.I’ll take credit for Jhonny’s homer. I told him to move up in the box, because some of Wakefield’s knuckleballs were just downright nasty and down in the zone. I told him to move up, and he just laughed. I don’t usually give guys tips on days I’m not playing, but I sometimes do with Jhonny, just because we talk about hitting a lot. But I usually don’t want to bother guys when they’re locked in. When I’m not playing, I kind of live through Jhonny, because I know he’s trying to go deep with every swing, just like me. And he did it tonight. I loved it. It seems like every game I don’t play, he goes deep. I get to mess around with him and towel him off and give him a cup of water.Spellcheck no likey Jhonny.I'm sure that Eric Wedge loves the fact that Jhonny and Ryan are "trying to go deep with every swing."(HT: FanIQ Sports Blog)STUB HUB: The Safe Way to Buy & Sell Tickets
