Failing to disclose such large sums of money in conflict-of-interest forms is a violation of federal law, and if the National Institutes of Health (NIH) applies existing rules and regulations in responding to these charges, it could deny all future grants to the organization that provided additional funding to Dr. Biederman: Massachusetts General Hospital, which administered $287 million in g

Schwarz-Christoffel Formula, 140-year-old Math Problem Solved by Researcher
Key additions by Professor Darren Crowdy to the Schwarz-Christoffel Formula helped solved the 140-year-old Math problem.A formula, now known as the Schwarz-Christoffel formula, was developed by two mathematicians in the mid-19th century to enable them to carry out this kind of mapping. However, for 140 years there has been a deficiency in this formula: it only worked for shapes that did not contain any holes or irregularities. Now Professor Crowdy has made additions to the famous Schwarz-Christoffel formula which mean it can be used for these more complicated shapes. He explains the significance of his work, saying:"This formula is an essential piece of mathematical kit which is used the world over. Now, with my additions to it, it can be used in far more complex scenarios than before. In i

Psychiatry Weekly “Clearly,” Dr. Leibenluft says, “some children do meet the DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder. However, these children are relatively rare. Far more common, perhaps as many as 3% of children in the community, are those who are extremely irritable and have ADHD-like symptoms, but don’t meet the DSM-IV criteria for bipolar disorder. A diagnosis of bipolar disorder requires distinct manic episodes, during which time one’s mood is altered, sleep and activity patterns change, and there are differences in reward-seeking behavior. Arab children prone to obesity, Australian researcher says
Sydney - We have always known that obesity is a class issue: Australian children from low-income families are twice as likely to be very fat as children from high-income families. What's become clear from a Sydney University study is the link between obesity and some ethnic groups: Australian children of Middle Eastern ancestry are four times more likely to be very fat than those from white families. "It really was quite a clear relationship," said lead researcher Jenny O'Dea, noting that Pacific Islander children were more likely to be very fat than even Arab children and that Aboriginal and southern European children were twice as likely to be rotund. Her study, based on a sample of 8,500 children aged six to 18 years, is the first in Australia to measure social class, ethnicity and obesity. Almost one in 10 children from low-income families were obese compared with around one in 20 in high-income families. A full 17 per cent of children of Middle Eastern et

When It Comes To Walking, It’s All Good, Says Mayo Clinic Researcher
These days, it’s easy for people to get confused about exercise — how many minutes a day should they spend working out, for how long and at what exertion level? Conflicting facts and opinions abound, but one Mayo Clinic physician says the bottom line is this: walking is good, whether the outcome measurement is blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems or mental health. “Getting out there and taking a walk is what it’s all about,” says James Levine, M.D., Ph.D., and a Mayo Clinic expert on obesity. “You don’t have to join a gym, you don’t have to check your pulse. You just have to switch off the TV, get off the sofa and go for a walk.” The health benefit associated with walking is the subject of Dr. Levine’s editorial in the July issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. Researcher to Demonstrate Vista Attacks
During a training session called "Understanding Stealth Malware" at the Black Hat event in Las Vegas, Joanna Rutkowska, a security researcher known for picking apart the security mechanisms built into Windows, is to demonstrate new ways for hackers to invade Windows Vista. Rutkowska said she is aware of the need for discretion: "For ethical reasons we want to limit the availability of this course to only 'legitimate' companies." The training is aimed at security and OS developers, forensic investigators and penetration testers, Rutkowska said. Earlier this spring, Rutkowska demonstrated several methods that sophisticated rootkits can use to hide from even the most reliable detection method currently available – hardware-based products that read a system's RAM. The demonstration will cover such methods, but will be more comprehensive, including unpublished techniques, implementation details, new code and sample rootkits. The target will be Windows but will also focus on the 64-

ONCONASE(R) has Potential as Chemopreventive Agent in Mesothelioma, Reports World-Renowned Mesothelioma Researcher at AACR Annual Meeting
BLOOMFIELD, N.J., April 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ONCONASE (ranpirnase), Alfacell Corporation's lead drug candidate, may have potential as a chemopreventive agent, according to world-renowned mesothelioma researcher Michele Carbone M.D., Ph.D., at this week's American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting. In a series of poster presentations, Dr. Carbone highlighted the growing worldwide problem of asbestos exposure and its link to malignant mesothelioma. Dr. Carbone presented data that show the early detection in patients at high risk for developing malignant mesothelioma is becoming more prevalent via the presence of certain biological markers in blood samples. Furthermore, he pointed out that ONCONASE's favorable toxicity profile and its well-documented mechanism of action, which directly affects the pathway that has been shown to cause asbestos carcinogenesis, position ONCONASE for potential early administration to populations "at-risk" for mesothelioma. If cli

Michigan Researcher Hopes to Unlock Evolutionary Secrets
Roughly 2 1/2 billion years ago, some algae began to photosynthesize, an astonishing development that led to the creation of plants and a myriad of complex life forms, including, incidentally, mankind.Today, Eric Linton, a Central Michigan University assistant professor of biology, is studying the gene makeup of single-celled euglenoids - single-celled organisms that acquired the ability to photosynthesize from algae - to learn whether that evolutionary step was a single hallmark moment or a series of events over time.Eventually, Linton hopes to learn whether dormant genes that once controlled photosynthesis in certain euglenoids can reactivate, shedding light on whether scientists can jumpstart long-dormant genes in other organisms, such as in humans to fight a host of diseases. With a 354,000 dollar grant from the National Science Foundation, Linton has begun a three-year project to perform complete genome sequencing of six forms of euglenoids, some of which long ago lost the ability
