The Daily Mail today screamed a few headlines about Drs Gerry and Kate McCann. A emotive comment cited " I refuse to believe the McCann's are guilty". I believe this issue is now turning into the OJ Simpson trial, a media frenzy that has the entire population hooked on the issue. The UK refuses to believe that anyone is guilty. All newspapers are taking sides. The Times though cites some independent and quite brilliant reporting on the issue. Putting all the forensics to one side, I would quite like to know whats in the intercepted emails and phonecall transcripts. Nevertheless, the news that they may have to delve into the cool 1 million to fund their legal teams ( and lawyers cost money) has not made them popular. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania has ruled that non-attorneys can represent employers at unemployment compensation hearings (full text of the opinion). Decided on April 17, 2007, this case paves the way for paralegals to represent clients at administrative hearings and at smaller judicial proceedings. The opinion stated:Simply stated, the character of the activities performed by representatives at unemployment hearings coupled with the informal nature of these proceedings, the minimal amounts at issue, and the long history of participation by non-lawyer representatives suggest that the public does not need the protection that serves as the basis for classifying certain activities to constitute the practice of law and that indeed, finding non-lawyer representatives to be engaging in the practice of law by acting in unemployment compensation proceedings would impose an unnecessary burden on the public.

The Souder-Hayhurst Debate - The first 15 minutes After watching the debate last night I decided I would post my general thoughts and then go into detail outlining the mistruths, mischaracterizations, distortions and ridiculousness of Souder's comments. Apologies for the length of this post but there's just too much to let slide. Let me start by saying that Dr Tom looked a little nervous and he could've rebutted some of Souder's positions and mischaracterizations more forcefully - something I now intend to do (hindsight is always 20/20 I know). Having said that, he still seemed more comfortable than the 12 year incumbent Souder. He also continuously stressed his military service which was an excellent strategy.
