      Riesling on Repeal Day
In stark contrast to last year, when Repeal Day elapsed without a taste of wine passing my lips, I spent yesterday, the 75th Anniversary of the abolition of prohibition, pouring some great German wines. As it happens, I was happy to be serving them alongside the men who grew them, some of the finest producers from their respective regions. While there was nary a lowlight on the evening, certain

Freedom to Protest: What Does the Proposed Repeal of Sections 132-38 of SOCPA Really Mean?
It seems another consultation on our freedom to assemble and protest is on its way. The House of Commons Joint Committee on Human Rights has just launched a 'Call for Evidence' in order 'to enquire into the human rights issues arising from policing and protest'. These are some of the questions asked:• What limits, if any, should be placed on the right to protest and why?• Should specific limitations be placed on the ability of certain groups to protest? If so, who and why?• Should the right to protest be more strictly curtailed in relation to certain geographical areas? If yes, where, why and what limits would be acceptable?• The Government proposes to repeal sections 132-8 SOCPA dealing with protest around Parliament and invites Parliament to consider whether additional

I have three simple questions for the folks at the Marin Institute, Mother's Against Drunk Driving and the other anti-alcohol groups who threaten any politician who dares to question the effectiveness of the 21 year old drinking age:(1) In the more than two decades since the drinking age switch was forced upon states by the threat of the loss of federal highway matching funds has the new law kept 18-20 year olds from drinking?(2) Is it a safer environment now that the government has pushed 18-20 year old drinking underground, without controls or supervision, and caused otherwise law abiding young adults to break the law? Repeal Day
As Joe and Dr. Debs were kind enough to remind me, today is Repeal Day – the anniversary of the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the Constitution, which ended Prohibition, on December 5, 1933. Seventy-four years later, I’ve quite inadvertently celebrated the occasion by not tasting a thing all day. I suppose stranger things have happened. Cheers to all who remembered to honor the day!

      Happy Repeal Day
Wednesday was Repeal Day, the anniversary of the end of Prohibition with the abandonment of the Eighteenth Amendment, the most dumbass tinker with the Constitution ever enacted, with the possible exception of the Sixteenth, which permits the Federal Government to pick our pockets of one-third of everything we earn. The traditional way to celebrate is to dress in garters and flapper garb and offer a toast on the twenty-first hour of the day. But I just consider it another day on which it is socially acceptable to engage in morning drinking.Besides being an achievement for booze hounds everywhere, the Twenty-first Amendment was the last victory of the states' rights crowd in modern history. The Amendment essentially said the Federal Government has no business regulating our immoral drinking habits, and left it to the states. And the states did various things. In Mississippi some counties are dry. In Washington State to get a bottle of Jack Daniels you have to go to a sterile sta

China To Repeal Travel Restrictions On HIV-Carriers
China is set to repeal immigration laws that restrict people with HIV/AIDS traveling to the country, a health ministry official and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria recently announced. The travel restrictions have been a hindrance, which block individuals who are HIV-positive from entering China to attend conferences on AIDS and is seen as reinforcing stigmas against those living with the disease. "China has decided to change its immigration laws, scrapping travel restrictions," Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund, told a news conference. "The new law, which hopefully will be passed in the coming months, will be in line with the global conventions, which recognize that travel restrictions for HIV-positive people do not have any public health value," he said. Vice Minister of Health Huang Jiefu did not give a timeline for the change, but said China was committed to making the amendment. "Modifying laws and regulation

Homosexuality Issues: To repeal S377A of the Penal Code or not?
It is interesting to note there are so many governments and individuals around the world who are still reluctant to acknowledge that gays and lesbians are “equal in dignity and rights”. Being gay or lesbian is not seen as a right but as a wrong. Homosexuality is considered a sin, or an illness, an deviation in ideology or a betrayal of one’s culture.Governments and individuals defended their stand against the repeal in the name of religion, culture, morality or public health. Homosexuals are branded “perverts” and “paedophiles”, and AIDS is labelled a “gay disease”. Homosexual relations are “anti - Christian”, anti - Islamic”etc. Wouldn’t such discrimination make this group of people “less than human”?Campaigning for lesbian and gay human rights might be seen by some as a controversial arena of human rights activism. New Hampshire Dad Attacks Boy for Having Sex With His Daughter, and the repeal of the Parental Notification Law
This is a story that has the people of New Hampshire seemingly evenly split. This is a story about a boyfriend and girlfriend who skipped school to have sex. There was a little problem here though, besides skipping school, you see the boy is seventeen and the girl is fifteen. She is six months away from the age of consent. The boy is going to be charged with sexual assault and tried as an adult. These charges are a Class A misdemeanor offense and is punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. He may also have to file as a sex offender, all though that seems unlikely, however he will be required by law to report the arrest on college and job applications.   That takes us to the second chapter of the story. When the girl didn’t show up for school a call was placed to her father. When her father found out why she skipped school he decided to take justice into his own hands. In other words, he beat the crap out of the boy after school on school property. He is als

Friday Governor Lynch made it official and signed the parental notification repeal bill. This bill repeals the law which said a MINOR has to have a parent’s permission to have an abortion. What a radical idea. Governor Lynch doesn’t believe that parents have the right to know if their daughters are acting in a dangerous way, and putting themselves at risks for diseases that are worse than pregnancy. Your daughter can’t go on a field trip with school without a permission slip, yet an abortion is okay? Anyway, I kind of got side tracked, I wanted to talk about a different issue with this bill. It’s Time to Repeal the Second Amendment According to Some Activists
Gun control is likely to be a high priority in the next administration, especially if a Democrat is elected. We have already heard the rumblings since the shootings at Virginia Tech. However now there is talk that the second amendment should be repealed, not just controlled. This quote is from Benjamin Wittes, a guest scholar at the center-left Brookings Institution Wittes, who said he has “no particular enthusiasm for the idea of a gun culture,” said that rather than try to limit gun ownership through regulation that potentially violates the Second Amendment, opponents of gun ownership should set their sights on repealing the amendment altogether. “Rather than debating the meaning of the Second Amendment, I think the appropriate debate is whether we want a Second Amendment,” Wittes said. While the idea of repealing the second amendment is absurd, at least this person has a couple of points correct here. His point that controlling guns is unconstitutional is o

      Repeal the Second Amendment
I was wondering how long it would take the Democrats to start beating the drums on gun control after the Virginia Tech shootings. I think it is more than just slightly despicable the way they will use anyone’s grief or family catastrophe to push their political agenda. They go on and on about gun control and you can never get them to answer this question: Will criminals or anyone that is determined to commit a crime say “Oh I was going to kill 30 people today but golly gee I can’t buy a gun legally so I guess I won’t do it after all..” Please. That's exactly what they are inferring and its past ludicrous. It’s a truism that when you criminalize guns only criminals will have guns. This is where they will start back pedaling and say that any reduction of guns on the street blah blah blah. I repeat the aforementioned question: Will gun control laws stop criminals from getting guns? The answer is no, it will not. Democrats fear an armed populace and for good reason. And we should ma

Is It Time to Repeal Laws Favorable to the Senecas (Indians)?
Any reasonable person can see that the Senecas are flouting the meaning of the law to gain financially.  Their scheme to hide income under the Indian Land Act is nothing more than a shell game.  This is 2007, it is time to end special treatment, especially for a group that continually shows no interest in being a part of the larger community unless there is a monetary interest.  The Senecas maintain that the annual payments to members are not dividends, but annuities tied to the 1990 Seneca Settlement Act. They also maintain the payouts are not subject to federal taxes or the control of the National Indian Gaming Commission. Each Seneca member received a payment of $4,500 last year and $6,000 this year, according to the Senecas. “These annuities are derived from the Nation’s Seneca Settlement Act funds,” Robert Odawi Power, the Senecas’ attorney, told members in the Seneca newsletter.
