How To Hire A Contractor For Home Renovations With A Home Equity Loan
Presently, and as we are all already well aware of, the housing market is clearly blanketed under quite a sizable and rather depressing shadow. There is a lingering gloom hovering over the housing market, one with seemingly no parts or any breaks within it as to let, at least, a few hopeful rays of sunshine [...]

      Nutley building: Only renovations
Remember this building I brought to your attention Thursday night? Well, it turns out the building is only going through renovations. There was no fire or any other kind of disaster at the site.Of course, given that there's an excavated oil tank on the site might have led me to realize it was just a renovation. But you never know. So, case closed on this one.

      Renovations at the New Apartment
Well, we have been busy packing, unpacking, coordinating renovations, buying furniture, accepting delivery of a washer and dryer, our mattresses, etc. I have been too busy to blog, but now things are slowing down. We are simply waiting for the furniture to be delivered. We had the wallpaper removed, the walls had to be plastered and then painted. The floors have been re-sanded and re-oiled. Now we are at a lull and we are just finishing up a long weekend. It started on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 with Queen's Day or Koninginnedag. More about that day in a separate posting upcoming shortly....Then Thursday was also a holiday here in the Netherlands, Ascencion Day or Hemelvaart. We had Friday off as a "moving day." Yes, in the Netherlands, you are entitled to 1 paid day off from work to move.

More Christmas Programs and More Renovations...
The weekend is over. That weekend? It felt like a week, maybe two weeks.I decided Saturday morning that the flooring in the main bathroom (the bathroom that was flooded when the dishwasher malfunctioned) was just too gross to live with anymore. Part of that may have been because my sister and her hubs will be here next weekend... and who wouldn't want things to look nice? I think it's been 4 years since they've been here.Anyway.I started the asking (nagging) right away Saturday morning... Unfortunately, Tim has been sticking to his "wait till January" plan. That's when I decided I would rather have concrete floors. I've seen them on HGTV... and they look really nice. Our sub floor in the bathroom is concrete, so I tore out the carpet/linoleum and the pad. Then I had trouble getting the nails out... That's when I called for help. To which my husband was not a happy camper. "it's a good thing I love you" he kept mumbling. Upon pulling out all the flooring we discovered th

Kitchen Renovations - Inspect Your Kitchen Work Daily or Live With Flaws
By: Dale GoldhawkInstalling a kitchen is a job for professionals - a whole parade of professionals. If you are having a kitchen installed, you'll see tile setters, plumbers, electricians, appliance installers, rough and finish carpenters, stone masons, and others along with the designer and project boss. However, there is a major role for the homeowner as a kitchen installation inspector. If you don't take on this role, your $25,000, $50,000 or $100,000 plus kitchen could see some serious flaws built into it.You don't have to peer over the shoulder of each worker every minute as they build and install your kitchen. You should, however, inspect the results of their work periodically through each day if you can and, certainly, at the end of each working day. Before work begins, in fact, inspect your contract with great care to see what is included and what is not. The contract should call for complete finishing of the job or spell out what is not part of the agreement. For instance, yo

      Home Renovations Update III
I thought I’d take a break from the “Investing Based on Demographics” theme for a day to give a quick update on my home renovations (as a couple of people have emailed me wondering how they're progressing). Basically, I haven’t really done much since my last update in July. However, this weekend I primed and applied the first two coats of melamine paint to our outdated kitchen cabinet doors. Three more coats will result in us having updated, new looking kitchen cabinets. The total cost for this project will be:Melamine Paint: $80New Hardware: $110 (estimate)By simply painting our existing cabinets I’ve essentially saved 1 to 2 thousand dollars, as that’s what it would cost to replace the kitchen cabinet doors with brand new ones. As I’ve already spent $880 on home updates this will bring my total spent to $1070 leaving me $930 to spend on the remaining fix ups.

Here is part of an interesting article that was written by Michael De Biasse for Fine Homebuilding Magazine regarding the massive renovation that took place at his beautiful eighty year old home: Although architect Michael De Biasse and his wife had considered a kitchen renovation for their 80-year-old home, it wasn’t until they’d spent eight years thinking out loud that the project got under way. In addition to bumping out the back wall of their house to expand the size of the kitchen, De Biasse relocated a garage to improve the home’s backyard. A new window seat provides views from the kitchen/dining area to the new backyard patio. One portion of the project involved the removal of a powder room and the conversion of a butler’s pantry to a full bath with modern amenities and a style that makes it look original to the house. Mr. DeBiasse had done a powerful renovation job at his eighty year old home and this should especially please subscribers of Fine Homebuil

      Home Renovations
I’ve recently been doing some renovations to my home in an attempt to increase its value before I sell later this year. I’ve budgeted $2000 to complete my “home makeover” and I’ll be doing all the work myself. I’ve done some reading on which areas of the house provide the most bang for your buck and as the literature suggests I’ll be concentrating most of my efforts on the kitchen and bathrooms but will be spending some time and money on the rest of the house as well. Here is a list of what I plan on doing:1. Paint dated cabinets in the kitchen2. Move and replace handles in kitchen3. Remove wallpaper in kitchen4. Replace kitchen counter tops5. Tile a kitchen backsplash6. Replace damaged trim around door in 3 rooms(dog scratched up) 7. Replace bathroom vanity, sink, faucet, mirror and 8. Stain back deck9. Clean garage10. Re-insulate garage door11. Paint from deck12. Paint entire interior of the house

Home Equity Loans for Realistic Renovations
By Anders Bylund - MortgageLoan.com It's easy to get a home equity loan to turn your home into the mansion of your dreams. But how far should you go? Home equity loans are a great way to tailor your home to your individual needs. But you don't want to go crazy and spend such a huge fortune on your renovation that it becomes impossible to sell your own personal Godzilladome. Home improvement gone awry For some examples of home improvement gone wild, look to the stars. Sports and entertainment stars, to be specific. Back in his day, MC Hammer was a prime example of luxury gone awry. Solid gold bathroom sinks and a dishwasher installed in the master bedroom don't add as much to the value of a property as you might think. We never got to see what that mansion was actually worth, as it was repossessed in bankruptcy; but chances are good that it sold for far less than the $12 million purchase price. MC got hammered. These days, it's not unusual for a rookie point

      Stadium Renovations Messing With Tradition
A little area dubbed "Tightwad Hill" which overlooks Memorial Stadium where frugal Cal fans gather to watch their Golden Bears is being threatened to obscurity. This traditional view has been in place since 1923 and has been free of charge. During winning seasons, the hill can draw up to as many as 500 fans on gameday. The Jaunt says you don't mess with tradition, as do so many faithful Cal fans. "They're screwing with tradition from the 1920s," said Marc Gantz, a Berkeley native who has been watching games on the hill since he was in elementary school. "How can they not have the foresight?" One Berkeley native and alumnus, Dan Sicular is accumulating signatures on a "Save Tightwad" petition which he plans on handing over to the UC Board of Regents. "People bring chairs, sometimes drag couches up there," said Sicular. Here's hoping that Cal backers can stop this renovation from removing such an institution.Related:Cal alum's goal-line stand for view from Tightwad HillHelp save this
