Rod Blagojevich, D-Ill., signed into law a renewable energy standard that will require Illinois utilities to supply 2% of their power from renewable energy sources by 2008, 10% by 2015 and 25% by 2025. An accompanying energy efficiency portfolio standard requires utilities to reduce overall electric usage by 0.2% of demand in 2008 and 2.0% by 2015.
Wind power is expected to play a major role in new renewable energy generation in the state as utilities work toward meeting the new requirements, according to the governor’s office. Illinois is the hub for many transmission lines, making connecting new wind projects to the electricity grid more affordable than in other states, the governor’s office adds.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Declaring a new direction in energy policy, the House on Saturday approved $16 billion in taxes on oil companies, while providing billions of dollars in tax breaks and incentives for renewable energy and conservation efforts.
Republican opponents said the legislation ignored the need to produce more domestic oil, natural gas and coal. One GOP lawmaker bemoaned ”the pure venom … against the oil and gas industry.”
The House passed the tax provisions by a vote of 221-189. Earlier it had approved, 241-172, a companion energy package aimed at boosting energy efficiency and expanding use of biofuels, wind power and other renewable energy sources.
”We are turning to the future,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The two bills, passed at an unusual Saturday session as lawmakers prepared to leave town for their monthlong summer recess, will be merged with legislation passed by the Senate in June.

The Wall Street Journal reflected recently on how some of Spain’s biggest renewable-energy companies have been planting their flag in the U.S., with big deals by utility Iberdrola, energy conglomerate Acciona, and wind turbine maker Gamesa.
On the wind side, Acciona announced last month it has acquired exclusive rights to develop 1300MW worth of wind assets in the states of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, USA. The development will take place through an acquisition of projects from EcoEnergy, LLC, an alternative energy solutions developer. Acciona expects to install approximately 150MW or more in 2008 from this pipeline. It will be supplying its own wind turbines for each of these development projects from its new US production facility in Iowa.

As part of its ongoing growth in renewable energy and developing technologies, Progress Energy Florida (PEF) has signed a long-term contract to purchase electricity generated by what will be the largest waste-wood biomass plant in the nation. In the past year, Progress Energy has signed contracts to add more than 200 megawatts of renewable energy to its system. Biomass Gas & Electric, based in Atlanta, Ga., plans to build a power plant in north Florida that will use waste wood products -- such as yard trimmings, tree bark and wood knots from paper mills -- to create electricity. It will generate about 75 megawatts. The plant is expected to avoid the need to burn nearly 5 million tons of coal over the 20-year life of the contract. The plant will use gasification to create electricity. Projected commercial operation is expected to begin in 2011. It would be BG&E's third biomass power plant. Germany just made an ambitious announcement that it aims to have 45% of all its energy come from renewable sources. They are looking at a variety of options, including solar, wind and geo-thermal energy in order to meet this goal.
The EU as a whole agreed to a goal of 20% renewable energy sources by 2020. Germany is definitely hauling out the big guns by declaring it will top this!
Germany also hopes that this move will increase employment and help the German economy. There are now over 214,000 jobs in the renewable energy sector and thousands more are expected to come up as Germany looks to accomplish this green goal.

There was a comment in today's PD article on Ohio's plan to restructure energy costs as well as trying to prevent spikes in charges and provide incentives for renewable energy sources. The comment was made by State Rep. Jim McGregor: "...our only choices in Ohio are to lead in energy or experience a second rust belt period where we become an economic backwater because we missed the opportunity." The 'missed opportunities' seem to take two roads. One, missing out on a chance to be the state that brings in renewable energy companies. Secondly, missing the chance to require our existing utilities to provide a certain percentage of their energy in renewable form. Energy sources are the next best thing that people will look forward to in the coming years. Other than being an answer towards reducing the harmful and polluted atmosphere that our environment is encountering, renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy are the way to go.
