Here is some good news for the renewable energy development providers. The World Bank's Chinese Renewable Energy Development Project has backed the use of PV in rural China. The project design is based on a market-driven approach to renewables, which undertakes the following:Focus on promoting commercial or near-commercial applications;Combines international advances in technology with proven Chinese low-cost production capabilities;Taps the large potential demand by lowering costs and improving products, system reliability, and consumer services. The project aims to foster development of a sustainable market for PV technologies capable of supplying electricity in an environmentally sustainable way. This provides modern energy to dispersed rural households and institutions. To achieve this,

Can renewable energy make a dent in fossil fuels?
4.2 billion. That's how many rooftops you'd have to cover with solar panels to displace a cubic mile of oil (CMO), a measure of energy consumption, according to Ripudaman Malhotra, who oversees research on fossil fuels at SRI International. The electricity captured in those hypothetical solar panels in a year (2.1 megawatts each) would roughly equal the energy in a CMO. The world consumes a little over 1 CMO of oil a year right now and about 3 CMOs of energy from all sources. Read the full story from News.com. Hattip to Laura B

Renewable Energy Utilities on the MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition Game Board
PAWTUCKET, R.I.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Recognizing the increasing importance of renewable energy sources around the world, MONOPOLY announces that it will feature “Wind Energy” and “Solar Energy” as the utilities in the upcoming MONOPOLY Here & Now: The World Edition game. The new utilities will replace the “Water Works” and “Electric Company” spaces that traditionally appear on the MONOPOLY game board.“When creating this first-ever worldwide MONOPOLY game board, we reviewed all elements of the game to ensure that it reflects today’s global perspective. Costa Rica Is 99% Powered By Renewable Energy
Costa Rica is a country rich with renewable energy. In fact, it gets about 99% of all its electrical energy from clean sources, and it's aiming to be the first country to become carbon neutral (more about that below). Some of Costa Rica's energy sources include geothermal energy, the burning of sugarcane waste and other biomass, solar and wind energy. However, the largest source of energy is hydroelectricity — its hydroelectric dams provide more than 82% of the country's electricity. But the electric needs of Costa Rica are increasing, and the government now wants to build new dams that would displace indigenous villages and flood valuable habitats. Local environmental groups are opposing the construction of new hydroelectric dams. Also, Costa Rica's efforts to minimize its own c

Government seems unsure whether it wants a domestic renewable industry or not
The UK supports an EU target that will require it to generate 15 per cent of its energy (which is likely to mean 30-40 per cent of its electricity) from renewables by 2020. The UK has a low baseline of renewable generation and the target will be stretching and expensive – which is why the [...]

      First flight from renewable energy.
Nuts picked from the Amazon rainforest helped fuel the world's first commercial airline flight powered by renewable energy.A Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet flew from London to Amsterdam with one of its fuel tanks filled with a bio-jet blend including babassu oil and coconut oil."Today marks a vital breakthrough for the whole airline industry," Virgin founder Richard Branson told reporters in a hangar at Heathrow airport prior to the flight's departure.British billionaire Branson said, however, it was unlikely the nut of the wild growing babassu palm would play a key role as airlines turn to renewable fuel sources to cut the industry's greenhouse gas emissions."We did not want to use biofuels such as corn oil which were competing with staple food sources," he said, adding he believed algae produ
