Costa Rica is a country rich with renewable energy. In fact, it gets about 99% of all its electrical energy from clean sources, and it's aiming to be the first country to become carbon neutral (more about that below). Some of Costa Rica's energy sources include geothermal energy, the burning of sugarcane waste and other biomass, solar and wind energy. However, the largest source of energy is hydroelectricity — its hydroelectric dams provide more than 82% of the country's electricity. But the electric needs of Costa Rica are increasing, and the government now wants to build new dams that would displace indigenous villages and flood valuable habitats. Local environmental groups are opposing the construction of new hydroelectric dams. Also, Costa Rica's efforts to minimize its own c

Everything looked so clean, nice farm lands and beautiful architecture in places like Munster or Olsenburg, and lot of people on the bikes. Autobahn was fun, in some sections there was no speed limit and since it was still summer time, lot of bikers passed us, at the no speed limit zone of course. The interesting part of the whole trip was how environmentally friendly Germans are and two things being, self cleaning toilets and windmill farms or technically called wind turbines. Renewable energy
BiomassThis one has actually been around for quite some time - remember wood? Our forests have taken a bit of a bashing but there is actually a little more to biomass than that. Biomass has a growing following as one of the great hopes as a sustainable energy source. High energy crops grown specifically to be used as fuel are being developed. Brazil, famously, has, for some time, been squeezing energy from sugar-cane, and scientists are beginning to consider agricultural and and even animal waste products as possible fuel sources (e.g. some zoos worldwide are using "animal by-products" to keep there electricity on). But it also means we need to face the "great recycler" by contemplating the reuse of our solid waste coming from paper, food and everyday wastes, plastics, wood, glass and tyres. In our rural areas or our factory farms it meanslivestock waste and in our cities it means repurposing of sewage. Even such past burners of fossil fuel such as Russia has woken up to biomass(1). Th

Illinois sets standards for renewable energy
Via Environmental Law & Policy Center: This has been a good week for supporters of renewable energies in Illinois. Gov. Rod Blagojevich, D-Ill., signed into law a renewable energy standard that will require Illinois utilities to supply 2% of their power from renewable energy sources by 2008, 10% by 2015 and 25% by 2025. An accompanying energy efficiency portfolio standard requires utilities to reduce overall electric usage by 0.2% of demand in 2008 and 2.0% by 2015. Wind power is expected to play a major role in new renewable energy generation in the state as utilities work toward meeting the new requirements, according to the governor’s office. Illinois is the hub for many transmission lines, making connecting new wind projects to the electricity grid more affordable than in other states, the governor’s office adds. “The legislation will spark a surge in wind power construction and economic development in Illinois,” says Howard A. The US-Spain connection in renewable energy
The Wall Street Journal reflected recently on how some of Spain’s biggest renewable-energy companies have been planting their flag in the U.S., with big deals by utility Iberdrola, energy conglomerate Acciona, and wind turbine maker Gamesa. On the wind side, Acciona announced last month it has acquired exclusive rights to develop 1300MW worth of wind assets in the states of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin, USA. The development will take place through an acquisition of projects from EcoEnergy, LLC, an alternative energy solutions developer. Acciona expects to install approximately 150MW or more in 2008 from this pipeline. It will be supplying its own wind turbines for each of these development projects from its new US production facility in Iowa. As a another proof it has been busy this summer, Acciona also announced another deal, this time in solar power. UNITED STATES: Progress Energy Florida signs contract for renewable energy from biomass plant
As part of its ongoing growth in renewable energy and developing technologies, Progress Energy Florida (PEF) has signed a long-term contract to purchase electricity generated by what will be the largest waste-wood biomass plant in the nation. In the past year, Progress Energy has signed contracts to add more than 200 megawatts of renewable energy to its system. Biomass Gas & Electric, based in Atlanta, Ga., plans to build a power plant in north Florida that will use waste wood products -- such as yard trimmings, tree bark and wood knots from paper mills -- to create electricity. It will generate about 75 megawatts. The plant is expected to avoid the need to burn nearly 5 million tons of coal over the 20-year life of the contract. The plant will use gasification to create electricity. Projected commercial operation is expected to begin in 2011. It would be BG&E's third biomass power plant. Renewable Energy & Sustainability:Ohio Lawmakers Will Be Asked to Think Outside the Box
There was a comment in today's PD article on Ohio's plan to restructure energy costs as well as trying to prevent spikes in charges and provide incentives for renewable energy sources. The comment was made by State Rep. Jim McGregor: "...our only choices in Ohio are to lead in energy or experience a second rust belt period where we become an economic backwater because we missed the opportunity." The 'missed opportunities' seem to take two roads. One, missing out on a chance to be the state that brings in renewable energy companies. Secondly, missing the chance to require our existing utilities to provide a certain percentage of their energy in renewable form. Of course I like the idea but I need to ferret out people with experience to tell me what is possible here in Ohio. The little champion of renewable energy
In a moment when the big news were that the European Union leaders agreed that a fifth of its energy by 2020 will come from renewable sources, a piece from BBC News on Friday talked about a place where right now, almost 70% of its energy comes from the wind and sun. (Watch a clip with the story by clicking here) It is the region of Navarra, in Northeastern Spain, better known in the US for the “running of the bulls” in Pamplona, made famous by Hemingway. Being poor in energy resources, it bet heavily on renewable energy in the eighties.  clipped from news.bbc.co.uk Now (…), this tiny region is capable of generating more electricity from renewable sources than big EU countries like France or Poland.   This strategy has worked well, as this industry has become one of the largest in the region and, in the process, it has created a lot of jobs (4,000 in the last decade).  Image courtesy of Acciona Energia Some 1,100 windmills are dotted
