Reboot or Shutdown from Remote Desktop Connection
If you have ever feel frustrated because you have been unable to reboot a machine from a remote location (using Microsoft’s own RDC), here’s a solution. Windows Tip: Access The Windows Security Window In a Remote Desktop Connection (Control-Alt-Delete Doesn't Work)
I get asked often how to bring up the security box (control alt + delete) in remote desktop and here is the answer:To use Control + Alt + Delete in a Remote Desktop Connection terminal, use Ctrl + Alt + End instead.I tested it and it worked beautifully on two XP machines, 1 2003 server but on remoting in (What I can't make up words??) to my Windows XP Pro SP2 Laptop it only brought up the task manager. Any ideas? And for those of you that don't know Control - Shift -Escape opens you directly to the task manager. And you can alt + tab through tabs on your remote desktop if it is opened full screen.Got some good shortcuts for us? Tips at askTheAdmin dot com!I am off to my data center today. Should be interesting as we prepare for upcoming upgrades._TheShortcutingAdmiN_Check out our RSS feed.

Remote desktop to a Windows XP PC from Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows Vista adds several layers of system security above and beyond what was used in Windows XP. In general, that is a good thing. However, those added layers of security sometimes interfere with an end user’s experience. The Remote Desktop Application is one example. Completing a remote desktop connection to a PC running Windows XP from another PC running Vista can be

Rebooting a Windows XP computer using Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
We are frequently involved in projects with small and medium sized organisations. Due to the size of these organisations often the network infrastructure available is limited as a result of smaller budgets than their larger competitors. One side effect of this reduced budget is that our clients sometimes need hardware and software to function in ways it is not exactly designed for. One example of this is often not being able to afford the licence fee for Windows Server and instead to use Windows XP Professional or even Windows XP Home to run a central file, print or database server. Clearly this approach would not work for a Microsoft Active Directory Domain Controller but can be used for many other types of server and there are times where there is no other option. There are two usability downsides to be aware of for remote administration when taking the decision to use Microsoft Windows XP instead of Windows Server. The first is that Windows XP Professional when accessed through Remo

How to lock computer in Remote Desktop Connection?
I really love the Windows Remote Desktop Connection. No matter what critics are saying, Microsoft usually deliver the best in the software business. When I remote to the server, sometimes I want to leave for a while and I want that computer to be locked. I've tried Windows+L, but it's not working anymore. So I googled about it. Now I've got the solution. It is quite easy to do that. Simply create shortcut as follow.Right click on the DesktopChoose New -->> ShortcutsAnd then in the dialog box type the followingrundll32 user32.dll,LockWorkStationAfter that give the shortcut whatever name you like. How to allow users to remote desktop in Windows 2003
In Windows 2003, I've created an ordinary user account and then I've add that account in to Remote Desktop Users group already as in the following picture. But when I login remotely, I've got the following error. To log on to this remote computer, you must be granted the Allow log on through Terminal Services right. By default, members of the Remote Desktop Users group have this right. If you are not a member of the remote desktop users gruop or another group that has this right, or if the remote desktop user group does not have this right, you must be granted this right manually.I'm sure if you got this error you'll feel frustrated like I did. How can you manually grant this user right to remote desktop? Okay, it's not that difficult. * First Go to -->> Administrative Tools -->> Terminal Services Configuration * And then Choose Connection and in the right panel right click on RDP-tcp * And then choose Properties. In the Permissions tab, add the users you want.

Remote Desktop Support Increases Efficiency and Speed of IT Support
Until the beginning of 2006, Precision IT supported their customers through various LAN-based remote control solutions. While this setup worked well for issues within networks to which Precision IT had administrative access, it did not enable them to support customers at remote locations or while customers were traveling. After trying several solutions, Precision IT purchased the B200TM, Bomgar’s small business remote desktop support appliance model. (more…)

Windows Vista Remote Desktop Authentication Certificate Error
For some time now I’ve been trying to use Windows Vistas Remote Desktop Connection Application to remotely connect from one Computer with Windows Vista Ultimate installed to another Computer with Windows Vista Ultimate installed on the same local area network and workgroup. But every time I try to connect to the other PC from either the first or second PC I get the following message: “The authentication certificate received from the remote computer has expired or it not valid.” And the thing is I’ve tried pretty much everything from Windows Vista’s Online Help (here) to a Windows Vista Remote Desktop Connection Authentication FAQ post by the Terminal Services Team (here) and lots more… and still no luck! So I’m hoping that someone can help me out here, there has to be someone that has experienced exactly (or very similar) the same problem as me and managed to fix it. Thanks in advance for everyone’s help.

CrossLoop - Remote Desktop that's Grandma proof
It’s been a long time since I’ve found it necessary to use a remote desktop application, and when I did, I found then slow and the performance was poor. But that was a long time ago. I haven’t used them with my clients for the past few years because they were technically difficult for “Joe Soap” (remember him?) to configure and use. CrossLoop is the application that should bring me back into the remote desktop fold: CrossLoop is a FREE secure screen sharing utility designed for people of all technical skill levels. CrossLoop extends the boundaries of traditional screen sharing by enabling non-technical users to get connected from anywhere on the Internet in seconds without changing any firewall or router settings. It only takes a few minutes to setup and no signup is required. Best thing is, it does exactly what it says on the tin. I buzzed Alec in the Philippines this morning and we had a session up and running in about 3 minutes, including downloading th
