The fine folks at This Old House asked me to share quite the kitchen remodeling success story with you. A young couple with children recently remodeled their 1970's style kitchen into a beautiful new kitchen on a $6,000 budget! They were able to accomplish the amazing kitchen remodel by finding great deals on Craigslist and local shops along with doing most of the work themselves. I know what kitc

I received a copy of Remodel magazine in the mail today, a Better Homes & Gardens Special Interest Publication. I'm definitely psychic, that's a fact, but I never know why I'm getting these thoughts! It's been forever since this project of mine was shot by BH&G. A long time has passed. The funny thing is, they were in such a rush to shoot it. Maybe they shot it a year and a half ago? Anyway, what

My wife and I agreed long ago that our bathroom is in really sad shape and needs remodeled very badly. However neither her nor I can see the sense in paying someone thousands of dollars to do it. Being a handy guy who put himself through college working in building maintenance, I figured I could tackle it, do some cosmetic things and at least make it not look so crappy while only spending very little dough. We also decided that any money for this project would come out of our economic stimulus check.Part 1 - I spent this afternoon yanking out the nasty old tub surround, it was a million years old, was stained and had faded from white to a nasty yellow/brown color. I picked up a new surround at the local true value hardware store in town, they had cheaper ones to pick from, but they were re

Okay so I just heard that Renuzit is running this awesome contest and I have to get involved in this one. This is not some small contest where you can win like a lifetime supply of Renuzit although I would love that too as I use their product religiously. With 2 kids and 4 dogs I kind of have to in order to actually smell anything nice at all. As I was saying though this is not some small prize this is a $20,000 prize from Renuzit TriScents to transform your home. If I had this prize I would almost try and take care of my teenagers room, just for smell purposes alone. But if I am going to have that kind of money to work with I am going to have to go with my kitchen. After all a kitchen remodel has the most resell value when selling your home.

My husband began building our home a little over three years ago. He hired help when he couldn't master something himself, but did many things on his own. Belle and I gave him up for several months. He'd go out to the new house straight after work, work into the late hours and come home after we were in bed. His Saturdays for several months were taken up. Thankfully we take Sundays as a day of rest seriously around here and my daughter and I would have him for one day a week, though usually that entire day (after church) was spent napping. It was during this time that his brother left to go oversees with the Navy leaving behind his wife and seven week old baby girl. So the girls packed their belongings and moved halfway across the county, and settled into our home. It was also during the f

The kitchen is one of the most expensive rooms in the home to renovate. Kitchen remodeling can be a major undertaking that requires skill and plenty of work. They need to be durable and strong, yet look good. They can be pricey or budget friendly. You have to decide what is best for your kitchen and your needs. Those of you who followed our kitchen remodel will be amused to hear that I’ve learned an interesting side effect of household renovations: as soon as you improve one aspect of your home all others look shabby by comparison. Our kitchen was no sooner done than we looked at our fireplace--which could only be described as a monolithic tribute to the 1970s—and knew it had to go.So we started into the whole process again. We ripped out the rock wall, the mammoth oak mantel, the rock-and-tile hearth and even the fireplace itself and installed one of those newfangled gas fireplaces. Moore Heating ran the gas line and installed the fireplace then Artistic Finish did the finish work including our funky new custom maple mantel. You can't see it well in the picture but the mantel is six feet wide and projects outward ten inches in an ellipsis. Now we have flames with the flip of a switch and a way to keep alive should the power ever go out (which isn’t uncommon in the winter here). For those of you who can stand to hear more of my whining about the state of my home right now I've put together a list of tips for guiding you through the nightmare that is The Remodel.May it guide you through life's tough times.1. Think carefully. Think very carefully before you jump into the project. No matter how vile your cupboards, no matter how rank your countertops, consider all other options before transforming your home into a war-zone mess hall. Have you considered, for example, selling your home and buying an RV? Living on the beach in Hawaii? Or maybe moving in with your next door neighbors? All would be preferable to being stripped bare and left to face the disaster that will be Your Kitchen.2. Don't worry about shopping around for the best prices. It doesn't matter where you go or how hard you cry, when you hear the estimate of what it will cost make sure you have a defibrillator handy. You're gonna need it.3. Planning does not have to be this hard
How do you avoid a kitchen remodel disaster? I’ve had a client walk into my showroom, upset and frustrated. His contractors, after working on and off for six months, suddenly quit. His house was a mess.
Imagine how disappointed you’d be when you’re standing in the ruins of your half-finished kitchen, without a plan to finish. Remodeling without a plan is like a cooking a complex meal without a recipe.
So, here’s four easy steps to guide you on your kitchen remodel:
1. Make Your Budget

According to the Cost Analysis Report by Specpan Market Research, the average amount lost to a major kitchen remodel is an incredible 19.6%. We can teach you how to beat the average and get the most out of your money by knowing three things:
1. Know your Neighborhood
Since resale value is a major factor if your decision to remodel, you should get a free estimate of your kitchen and ask an experienced realtor about the prices in your neighborhood. Alternatively, you can check Domainia to see how much houses in your neighborhood have sold for. Rising house prices will typically return your investment.
2. Know the Trends
