Native American Literature: Remembrance, Renewal (part 2)
In 1992, a group of Native American scholars and activists created an international writers' festival, bringing together 360 artists from nine countries, chiefly the United States. Nearly half their number already had published at least one volume -- fiction, drama, memoirs, even cookbooks. Out of that convocation came two organizations -- the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas, and a mentorin

Yom HaShoah -- Holocaust Remembrance Day -- Part II
The Nazis’ brutal murder of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and others didn’t end with the millions of people considered untermenschen. The Nazis also killed many “normal” people. When my husband and I were stationed with the U.S. Army in Munich, Germany, from September 1970 to May 1972, we got two newspapers: the army newspaper The Stars and Stripes and the International Herald Tribune. Below is an article from the October 18, 1971, International Herald Tribune with the headline “Nazis of Oradour Massacre Hail War in Beery Reunion.” ROSENHEIM, West Germany, Oct. 17 (Reuter) – Some 500 members of the Nazi “Das Reich” SS division, which massacred over 600 men, women and children in a French village in 1944, today wound up a weekend conference to form an old comr

Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day – and Living in Europe From 1970-1972
At sundown tonight starts the one-day minor Jewish holiday of Yom HaShoah, the yearly remembrance of those who were murdered under the Nazi regime. Stories of Nazi brutality and survivor miracles are always with me. For six years, from 1972 to 1978, I published survivors’ stories as editor of Friday Forum, the monthly “literary” supplement of the weekly Philadelphia Jewish Exponent. Many of those stories still “live” inside me. Currently I’m working on the sequel to MRS. LIEUTENANT: A SHARON GOLD NOVEL. This next novel – MRS. LIEUTENANT IN EUROPE – will be based on when my husband and I were stationed in Munich, Germany, from September 1970 to May 1972. The following is a true story from that time. In 1972 I worked for the 66th Military Intelligence Group, h

L'ACQUA, LA MEMORIA E I SILENZI DEL MARE / THE WATER, THE REMEMBRANCE AND THE SILENCES OF THE SEA

I was eighteen years old, and a senior in high school. I only attended school for a half a day in my senior year, having taken as many extra courses as was permitted. There was an adult movie theatre in town (in those days they showed the old "nudie cuties" but they were very exciting to an eighteen year old with a perpetual erection. I used to go to the theatre every thursday afternoon, the day the new features started. I would sit in the theatre, watch all I could stand and then jack-off two or three times before catching the bus home. Pretty standard behavior for a teen-ager but still very exciting. One particular afternoon I was watching a film allegedly about nurses, and some janitor at the hospital who had a way of catching them in the nude. A real farce now, but bold for the times. I

      Remembrance Day, 2007
So Remembrance Day, 2007, it always seems to roll around so quickly - and how quickly we all seem to forget the debt we owe those who have fought and died for us to live comfortable and peaceful lives at home in the UK. I don't want to get into the legality of the current conflicts in Iraq, nor the issue of us being in Afghanistan, what matters on Remembrance Day is that we all remember what we owe to those who have sacrificed there lives for us - whether we asked them to or not - and for the sacrifice which is still going on today by the members of our armed forces across the world. This used to be a difficult time for me, coming from a mixed English and Irish upbringing - (especially when I was younger and trying to understand which 'side' I was on) - as I've got older this has got a lot easier. On Remembrance Day, more than any other time, I'm not English and I'm not Irish - I'm both. It's often not remembered that in 1916, the same

      REMEMBRANCE DAY
In Flanders Fields Remembrance Day is designed to remember the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war, especially the First World War. While we remember those who gave their life for the freedom we enjoy today, we should also spare a thought for the humiliating and degrading treatment meted out to the elderly who fought for us by our National Health Service. I once had the pleasure and honour of meeting Lady Diana Gibson Watt, a lady who was larger than life and who told me the various tales of the war. I believe she was also the lady who told me that it was important to raise the concerns over elderly care I knew of to the media in the year 2000. She told me " If you don't do it, no doctor will". She invited me to tea but she tragically died before I could meet her again. She fought in the war and told me about the community spirit that existed and how modern times now have ripped the respect for one another. I liked our chats while she munched croiss

      Remembrance Day
They mingle not with their laughing comrades again; They sit no more at familiar tables of home; They have no lot in our labour of the day-time; They sleep beyond England's foam. But where our desires are and our hopes profound, Felt as a well-spring that is hidden f

On Monday I was allowed onto the balcony at the Municipal buildings (cheers to Jo and others) to grab a few snaps of the revamped formal square. I took a few (as you can imagine), but the one above shows the fabulous pathways created to take people around the memorial (pictured below) which is just to the right of the image. You can see the law courts (left), police station (centre), library (centre, right) and Christ Church (top right). A lot of Crewe folk were against the move, but over a year on surely most agree that it was the best solution - especially given that the Market Square will soon become a building site? Oh, and don't forget it's Remembrance Sunday this weekend...

I had to remove another post today when I realized it was far too inappropriate for September 11th. Because I believe we should honor the memories of those who died that day and reflect back on this, the 6th anniversary of 9/11.When I think back to 9/11 I remember exactly what I was doing when I found out; just as I’m sure all of you do. What I remember most, however, is that palpable fear that spread through my body with each report of another assault on our country. I too couldn’t be pried from the coverage as I wondered how I could protect my then newborn son from terrorism. I imagined running from those crumbling buildings with him in my arms. I imagined fleeing the Pentagon, frantically pushing him in a stroller. I imagined sitting on a plane, trying to sooth him with a trembling whisper. In a weakened moment I felt helpless and lost. That is, until the news coverage began to unearth the true nature of our country. We heard about the firefighters and EMT who ran towards those s

. If the name of the Divine is uttered even once with the tongue, it is the remembrance of the tongue; if the Divine is remembered once with the heart, then that is equal to thirty five million utterances (dhikr, remembrance) of the tongue. Such is the dhikr of the heart. There are 35 million blood vessels in the body, and all are connected to the heart. If the Divine’s name is uttered even once (with the heart) then all the vessels utter it too.. In a river, a boat travels on the water and the greater the amount of water, the more at ease the boat will be. However if that very water enters the boat, it will capsize. The heart is as the boat and the sorrows and heartaches of the world are the water; everyone’s boat has sunk except that of the people of God - those who keep the remembrance - which always stays afloat.. God the Most High has created the heart for His remembrance, and has not created it for worries.. The body has been given to use, and not to nourish and make fat: You

On this day that we have set aside, to honor our fallen comrades, remember the sacrifices that were and are still being made today. Remember the soldier sitting in 120 degree weather, battling the generators, desperately trying to keep cool. Remember him/her as he/she lays in bed at night dreaming of their loved one's left behind. Remember them, as they are awakened in the middle of the night by the whistling of a round attacking them under the cover of darkness.

      Remembrance of Things Past
I remember a time when our tax dollars were spent on a war on poverty. I remember a time when torture and death squads were third world horrors, and we tried to stop them. I remember a time when planes didn’t arrive in the dark of night, filled with coffins that no one was supposed to see. I remember a Constitution and a Bill of Rights. I remember a time when War must be declared by the Congress. I remember a time when gasoline was not considered worth dying for. I remember a time when sovereign nations were sovereign. I remember a time when there was peace at our borders, in our airports, and in our schools.I remember America. And I weep.Waging peace,Diane S.

      Creating Keys For Remembrance
כ"ו בניסן תשס"זExcerpt from T. Thorn Coyle's Evolutionary Witchcraft:There are other practices you can do throughout the day to remind yourself to ground, center and bring yourself fully into the moment at hand. My favorite is to create "keys" for myself. These keys are attention tricks that remind me of my spiritual life and my reasons for attempting to work on my self. My most effective key is to pause and really notice every time I am about to put my hand on a doorknob. I will take a breath, look at the knob, feel my body, and let a calm space open up inside as I reach for and turn the knob. This can be done in about five seconds. Another key I use is to notice my butt and thighs in the chair as I am sitting at my computer. This reminds me to stay in my body, anchored to my breath, and not let my mind spin off in disconnected fantasies that eat my energy. You can key your reminders to turning on the lights or opening the refrigerator or drinking a glass of water. A key sh

      In Remembrance of Moxie
I don't visit the llama pen like I used to since Jim and IJ are their primary caretakers. Yesterday when taking Diesel out, I got the idea to visit them. I hadn't been down in a while, so I looked forward to seeing the llamas again.Everyone seemed to be doing well, except Moxie was missing. I scanned the pen. There in the left bay he lay still. Too still.I maneuvered over the messy ground to see him better. The first time I'd seen llamas lie down I'd thought they were dead until I realized they were sun bathing. Moxie, however, wasn't in the sun, and I couldn't see him breathing. As I started to dial Jim on my cell phone, Moxie's eyes moved. Relieved, I talked to him, but he didn't lift his head as usual. Jim had said months before Moxie wasn't doing well. His gait had worsened. When we'd first brought Moxie home two years ago, he had already contracted Meningeal Worm disease from deer feces at his last home. The owners had found and treated it in time, but the affects were ir

What does Remembrance Day mean to you?
At the Remembrance Day assembly at my school today, there was a powerpoint presentation prepared by one of the teachers, who happens to be a left-leaning Green party supporter. I didn't expect much that would qualify as "supporting veterans" or "supporting the troops", and there wasn't. Instead, he chose to interview a few students and their relatives' experiences in war. None of those relatives were actual soldiers in the war. Now, of course we can't forget about those who witnessed war in their own land and lost many relatives because of that. But what about the men and women that served in the armed forces and those that do today? What about their sacrifices and their losses? Those were conveniently shoved aside. Come to think of it, very little of the brief event had to do with the actual people who fought in war.The teacher didn't hesitate to put an image of George Bush bouncing around on the screen though. I guess he likes playing around with Powerpoint features. A lot of peo

      Nov.11: Remembrance Day (Canada)
Remembrance Day falls on November 11th in Canada and other Commonwealth countries to pay respect to the fallen soldiers who fought in the wars past and present. Normally, I would be wearing a poppy around this time, but in Seoul I have not been able to find a the Royal Canadian Legion. Usually I would be at home right now watching the Remembrance Day Parade on TV.In Flanders' Fields - John McCrae

      Support Holocaust Remembrance Week
Last week the children and I watched the movie “Paperclips”. If you’ve never heard of this story please go to their website and read about it. They explain much better than I ever could. I have always been interested in the Holocaust- all aspects of it. For me it has been a lifelong struggle to understand how so much evil can exist and how so many can suffer because of close-minded views and hatred. Each time I read a new story, see a new movie, meet a Holocaust survivor I truly feel a deep pain in my heart. I think this more than anything else has brought me to tears too many times to count. So much lost and for what? What is even sadder is that our world seems to not have learned much of anything from it all. Racism, Anti-Semitism, and Hate still reign supreme in the world today. We dishonor the millions of lives lost each time we refuse to learn and grow. One thing that stuck with me about the movie (besides the immensity of it all) was the fact that during World War II, Norweg
