A story that I wrote for you all will be published this fall in Stories for Shorty: A Collection of Recollections from the Jockey Club. The book is about the now-legendary, now-defunct punk nightclub that featured bands like Bauhaus, Black Flag, the Circle Jerks and The Ramones. The Jockey Club has become somewhat mythological in the years since the bar closed. There were really only a few punk clu

That picture to the left there is one I took of Mr. Wes Bentley. You might remember him as Ricky Fitts from "American Beauty" or as Blackheart from "Ghost Rider". I remember him from the patio at a local pub where he hung out with us plebs and bought a round of beer. When the Palinode pointed him out and said That guy's a dead ringer for Wes Bentley, I said He sure is, and then it turned out th

Sunday was the 55th anniversary of the worst tornado in Texas history. It struck Waco, TX on the afternoon of May 11, 1953. This post, at the ArgusLeader, retells the story of "the Janklow 36." Twenty-two years ago, in October of 1986, Governor Bill Janlow (R) addressed the prison overcrowding pardon by releasing individuals that he considered to be "low-risk inmates with few South Dakota ties." Thus, the commutations were conditioned on the recipients leaving the state and never returning. The article says a commutation of that sort "has not been granted in South Dakota before or since." The result of the effort? The ArgusLeader notes:It was a gamble that, according to an Argus Leader investigation, turned out to be a much bigger public safety risk to South Dakota and other states than the governor probably ever imagined. A few took advantage of the release to re-enter society, starting families and businesses
The Arkansas Times features an editorial on the death penalty. Along the way, it notes:Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller's last official act was to spare the lives of 15 prisoners on Arkansas's Death Row. “What earthly mortal has the omnipotence to say who among us shall live and who shall die?” he asked in 1970. “I cannot and will not turn my back on lifelong Christian teachings and beliefs merely to let history run out its course on a fallible and failing theory of punitive justice.”See full editorial here.

From All Things Pakistan Today is 23rd March, 2008. On this date in 1940 the historic Lahore Resolution (Later Pakistan Resolution) was passed. This year I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my favorite photographs from 1940's and also very very relevant speeches of founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah. [ ... ] Speech by Mohammad Ali Jinnah on Criminal Law Emergency Power Bills before the Imperial Legislative Council (February 6, 1919): No man should lose his liberty or be deprived of his liberty without a judicial trial in accordance with the accepted rules of evidence and procedure… the powers which are going to be assumed by the executive, which means substitution of executive for judiciary, such powers are likely to be abused, and in the past we hav

Ungo and Mogo, two Neanderthals from about 100,000 years ago were frozen in a glacier and by a rare fluke of nature, the conditions were perfect for cryogenic suspension. Well, with global warming and all, here it is 2008, and guess who just thawed out? You guessed it. Of course, if you heard them speak, you wouldn’t understand a word of it. So we’ve translated their dialog from Neanderthalese into modern day English. Lets listen in as they stumble upon civilization for the first time and encounter a freeway.Ungo: Shiny beasts with circular legs go fast. Strange how they stay on the dark dirt.Mogo: Loose herds make them easy prey, but how do you eat something like that?Ungo: I think you have to shell it to get the meat, like a beetle only slightly larger. Please enjoy this vintage Hahn at Home in honor of Arthur and all those who have died before or since and for all of those surviving with HIV/AIDS. World AIDS/HIV Awareness Day is today. I’ve seen some pretty eloquent blogs on the topic and felt a little inadequate to post anything particularly insightful. Every single person afflicted has a story. Today, that would make over 40 million stories. But, I just want to tell you about one. Arthur was a long, lithe, sexy, beautiful, graceful Black man about my age. He was witty, bright, sardonic, seductive, charming, and though he could occasionally be a Miss Thang, he was mostly just kind. I met him in the last two years of his life. He had been infected very early in the epidemic, probably during his travels with the theater company he sang and danced in—he never really knew for sure. When I first got to Omaha, he was at “the bar” (read: social hub for almost all Omaha over-30 queers). That night I decided I neede

It’s not all doom and gloom around these parts while I sit on my ass and wait for my future to be determined by a group of soul sucking zombies er, government bureaucrats. In an active attempt to avoid the looming emotional crisis that October represents for our family, the hubs and I went out and did something we’ve never done before.
We hired a hooker.
Kidding. In his dreams. Actually, his dreams would consist more of the sexy (and now slightly knocked up) Halle Berry, me and a can of whip cream. Or more likely, Halle Berry, the whip cream and me locked in the basement, pounding on the door, screaming to get out.
No, no hooker. However, we went to see our friendly, neighbourhood travel agent. All right, so we just randomly picked one out of the phone book, but turned out, she WAS friendly. Just not in our neighbourhood. (To be fair, our neighbourhood consists primarily of a bunch of trees, a few bears, some moose and the odd hillbilly.)
It must have been Boo’s luck
Today is not only the sixth year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, but also the anniversary of the exact day of the week that this madness happened.6 years ago today, I got up and went to teach my 9:30am Cardio Kickbox and 10:30 Total Body Conditioning classes as I usually did every Tuesday morning. Like most, I saw this as just another day to get through, another task to accomplish, another day of work to complete, and as always, was looking forward to the weekend. I, like we all, had NO idea of the calamity that was to follow. While getting ready for work, I heard something about a plane crashing into a WTC tower on the radio. I turned on my television, and saw the afermath; a fiery, gaping hole in the tower. I remember saying to myself "They're gonna have a hard time fixing that". I then went out the door and on to work. The gym I worked in that day had 4 floors, and our aerobics class was on the top one, pretty much isolated from the rest of the gym members on the lower 3 floors
There's not much to say here. What can you say about something like this? We are fortunate and unfortunate to have been alive to witness, even from a distance, one of the most frightening moments in the history of this country. Are there words to truly describe what many of us felt then and feel now? I still can't watch the videos or look at the pictures for more than a few moments. I didn't know anybody in NYC, but for whatever reason just seeing it even in still form brings me to tears. So, for this day and this day only, let's all forget the war inIraq and everything else going on in this country. Let's forget who's running for election, what new laws are coming in, etc.All we should do at this moment is remember. Remember all the men and women in the trade center and at ground zero, alive and dead, who saw it happen.Remember the fire fighters who risked their lives doing what they volunteered to do.Remember. That's the only thing we as a people can do. Most of us weren't the

According to the New York Times (registration may be required), legendary King Kirby is getting some much needed attention now more than a decade after his death, one of the ways by having stamps made in his memory. Of all those in comic books who got stamps, I'd say Kirby deserves them the most. After all, he gave the world some of its most important superheroic icons.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Chris Paul wanted to make sure he made an immediate impact the first time he met Skip Prosser. The star guard was a high school player at an AAU tournament several years ago in Florida when, in a desperate attempt to catch the Wake Forest coach’s eye, he walked directly into Prosser’s path. “I bumped into him purposefully so Coach would get to know who I am,” Paul said through tears Tuesday night during Prosser’s funeral. “At the time, I never knew this man would more…
Two acquaintances hailing from Western Pennsylvania -- who were inspired by the construction of the Pirates' current home, PNC Park -- decided to gather several accounts and memories associated with Forbes Field to be released in their new book titled ""Forbes Field: Essays and Memories of the Pirates' Historic Ballpark, 1909-1971. Authors David Cicotello and Angelo J. Louisa -- currently residing in Nebraska -- visited many places and people to record accounts from fellow fans. The men gathered more than 200 accounts from fans like them through contacts at nursing homes, senior centers and a Web site. Tim Challies on why the producers of Evan Almighty failed to lure in the Christian target group at the box-office:Because they don't know the audience. They try to appeal to some watered-down, ridiculous notion of what a Christian is and then are surprised to learn that true Christians really bear no resemblance to that caricature.Dr. Hamilton on the real point of ministry:We are not the point. Our capacities are not the point . . . May the Lord so ravish the souls of the manager-ministers that they cannot help but be consumed with the greatness of God, all taken up with the study of his word, and ever pointing seminarians to Christ, not the skills they need. Michael on the importance of speaking rightly about the Holy Spirit:“The Holy Spirit is God” is a perfectly good expression, as long as one has a distinctly Christian (read, Trinitarian) understanding of God. Of course, assuming this in a post-Christian environment is insane.Graeme Goldsworthy in Gospel-Centered Hermeneutics
New Delhi, April 30 (IANS) Exactly eight years after she was brutally killed, friends and supporters of slain model Jessica Lal turned up at her cemetery Monday to say a prayer for her - and also laud her sister Sabrina who tirelessly battled on for justice.
The landmark case in which the public and the media rallied around the Lal family to help bring the culprits to book is only too fresh in India’s memory.
“I wish I could see Jessica but that will never happen again. She is history now and I can only cry,” an emotionally choked Sabrina told IANS.
“I and a few of Jessica’s and my close friends and family members visited her cemetery, put flowers and prayed that her innocent soul may lie in peace. We have been doing this every year.”
Jessica, who was tending the bar at a party in the Tamarind Court restaurant in south Delhi owned by businesswoman and socialite Bina Ramani, was shot dead on the night of April 29-30, 1999 by Manu Sharma, the son of a
By our count nearly 350 geeks and "geeks at heart" converged on the Railroader building in downtown Saint Paul this past Saturday and I think most everyone has been very positive about the result. I believe that number (or any number over 300) would make minnēbar the largest barcamp outside of India (Barcamp Bangalore 3 - just a couple weeks ago - drew over 500 people!). I know that barcamps are supposed to be about local community and ours was no exception, but it was still nice (and a little amazing) that we had quite a few people drive or fly in from New York (at least 2), South Dakota (at least 2), Wisconsin (6 or more), and Chicago (at least 1). Knowing that this event is worth someone's Saturday is one things, but also worth a six hour drive, or several hundred dollar plane ticket? That is awesome.
I am very happy with the way the event turned out. I think the sessions, by and large, were first-rate. The special guests such as William Gurstelle and his excitement for makin
"The First," the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson’s landmark integration of African American players into major league baseball. This evening, a diverse crowd numbering about two hundred or so gathered at the George Washington University to celebrate "The First," the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's landmark integration of African American players into major league baseball. The event was a celebration and reflection of the influence of Jackie Robinson, not only in baseball, but in the American lexicon. University officials, professors and historians spoke at length and with reverence about him; therefore, at times it was highly entertaining, while highly educational. The author of the book, ‘Boys of Summer’ and the keynote speaker, Roger Kohn, spoke at length about Jackie, at times with great emotion about him and legacy on the culture at large. Kahn has a shared history with Jackie Robinson, having covered him and the Brooklyn Dodgers as a spor
