We seem to have a new trend: I’m seeing more and more instances of people stating after a data breach that the lost or stolen computer was not encrypted but was password‑protected: The Home Depot and the Kiski Area School District instances are the two that come into mind as of right now, but there certainly have been more since then.  A quick search in Google also shows that CUNY released a similar statement regarding a laptop theft reported last month.   It seems that they’re referring to the password and username you have to enter prior to accessing your Windows machine, the Windows logon prompt.  Unfortunately, that particular logon prompt is not secure.  I’ve already mentioned in passing why this is so in other blog posts.  I’m not sure what to make of it.  Is this a PR effort in a lame attempt to assure the people affected?  Or perhaps people in the public relations department actually believe that because you’re entering a passwor

So get this: my International Relations course was only half a semester long (same amount of course hours though because it was twice as long as the rest of my classes... and added to that he often ran 45 minutes over- and the class was supposed to end at six- so sometimes I wasn't getting home to 8:15). Today marks the start of the annual PRSA conference in Philly. Invariably this conference spawns a bunch of posts about what’s wrong with the PR industry. In spite of this meeting, PR industry leaders cannot affect the changes necessary to reverse the public’s negative perception of PR. Confession: I used to be a member of PRSA and found little value in it. Why? A few reasons: My first boss was an award winning APR and a local PRSA champion. He also had six internal ethical charges filed against him in three years. I mistakenly associated the two together. PRSA events seemed like a great place to recruit young PR pros, but not to find clients or make senior contacts The seminars were skin deep In short, spin and chest beating was abound. House Democrats are insisting on a floor vote that would declare the World War I-era killings of Armenians genocide. Turkey officials are upset over the measure and have warned this will seriously hurt relations and that their military ties with the USA will never be the same again.The support of Turkey has been vital in both Iraq wars. On Monday we took the Grove City College Marching Wolverine Band to one of the many festivals that we attend each year.  This was not a festival that we have attended in the past.  Typically, the band heads south from GCC and attends many of the bigger Pittsburgh area festivals and marching shows.  On Monday, we headed east to the Allegheny-Clarion Valley school district. It was great to arrive at Allegheny-Clarion High school and see the rural school setting.  It’s nestled in a valley between and among the many hills of the area.   The football field laid un-surrounded by fences, open and directly in front of the school.   As a matter of fact there weren’t any bleachers.  But, there were hundreds of people who brought their lawn chairs and sprawled out over every inch of the low rise hill on the home side of the field. A story I have told before here points to the simple minded thinking of the opposition party: Me and a number of co-workers were in the company break room eating lunch one day not too long after 9/11. It was pretty much the usual comments about the attack until one lady made what I considered an amazing, yet very revealing, statement. She said that she was sure that if we could only sit down with the terrorists and bake some chocolate chip cookies together we could all be great friends. The break room went dead silent. The fact that they chop the hands off of thieves and are likely to stone to death a woman foolish enough to go outside with a bare head seems to escape them.
