The diet drug Acomplia (rimonabant) will not be reimbursed by health insurance in Germany, the European Union’s largest market, according to a decision by the German Ministry of Health published Jan. 11th in the official journal of the government. The decision to classify Acomplia as a “lifestyle treatment” comes as a serious blow to manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis, which immediately announced that it intends to challenge the classification in German court. Sanofi had contended that Acomplia should be covered under the German state health insurance program because in addition to promoting weight loss, it helps lower a person’s risk for developing diabetes and heart disease. The German regulatory body that decides which prescription medicines will be covered by German state health insurers, the Joint Federal Committee (G-BA), recommended that Acomplia be classified as a “lifestyle” drug in October. Sanofi had been hoping that this decision would not be confirmed by the German Mi

February 2006 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has notified Sanofi-Aventis that its much anticipated drug Acomplia (rimonabant) is “not approvable” as an aid for smoking cessation, according to the French pharmaceutical manufacturer. No details were immediately provided by either Sanofi or the FDA as to why Acomplia has been rejected as an aid to smoking cessation. While Sanofi initially held high hopes for Acomplia not only as a weight-loss drug but also as a drug that could help cigarette smokers quit, it never published the results of two of its smoking-cessation studies. Asked about this, a public relations representative of Sanofi on January 18, 2006 told us “we have a publication plan in place and publications are expected shortly.”

The Tasman Council has dismissed an application to build a $12 million eco-tourism lodge at Crescent Bay in the state’s south-east. The luxury tourist retreat was planned by James Baillie, the son-in-law of conservationist and entrepreneur Dick Smith.
