When I purchased my Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser, I knew there were issues with the power windows. Except for the drivers door, all the windows rolled up and down, not perfect but they worked. Then one rainey day last Fall, I rolled down the rear door window and pop, the window would not roll up any more. Luckily, I wasn’t too far from home.

The discrete LDO design presented here came about because of the need for an LDO (low drop-out regulator) for 5V designs. Subsequently it was used successfully in two designs.
There are better performing LDO parts, but they tend to be either single sourced or expensive. I wanted something cheap made from common components, and I decided to have a go at a discrete design. Initially I thought of using an op-amp, but it quickly became clear that a long tailed pair should form my error amplifier.
The performance parameters are very crude : 5V nominal at up to 10mA from 6-16V. But this is very useful for battery powered and simliar designs which do not need accurate 5V rails. In the design presented, a RESET output is included.

As you can see, the circuit is purely electrical. In the presented design, the switch has been moved, compared to the original to a location where the switch better functions under different circumstances. I like to use the LM2941 regulator (about 5 Euro here in Belgium) instead of a cheap LM317 because of the low voltage drop over the regulator, typically 0.2-0.3V (max 0.5V at 1A) as opposed to the 1.5-2.5V dropout voltage of the LM317. With the 12 to 12.xV on a common PSU rail you get the full or almost the full 12V on your fans. The formulas for resistor calculation are the same as for a LM317, but the LM2941 has 5 pins as opposed to the 3 of the LM317 (the adjust pin is separate and a “ON/OFF” pin is also provided to remotely shutdown the regulator. The LM2941 is rated for 1A max. with some cooling. The values of R1, P1 and P2 in the schematic have been calculated for an output range from about 7 to 12V and a 10K linear potentiometer.

At input side of regulator, I inserted a series inductor in addition to normal decoupling capacitor to form a LC filter, so that it can resist transient voltage. If supply voltage temporary goes up, it can be absorbed by regulator. But if it goes down below 13V, regulator can’t do anything but drops its output voltage. If an inductor is there, it prevents capacitor from discharging into battery side, keeping regulator’s input voltage high. It also prevents noise emission, smoothing the PC’s pulse-ish current consumption.
Additionally, I added a surge suppressor diode (20V) designed especially for car electronics, to protect regulator from higher voltage than its maximum input (30V). Also a DC line filter is inserted just after the input from car, to eliminate high frequency noise.

The Swiss parliament has approved plans for a new 'super regulator' which will bring the activities of three current regulatory bodies under one roof.
The new entity, to be known as the Federal Financial Market Supervisory Authority (Finma), will incorporate the roles currently played by the the Federal Banking Commission, the Federal Office of Private Insurance and the Money Laundering Control
With the component values shown the circuit is designed to have and output voltage range of approximately 1.25 to 13.5 Volts when measured at the output of the regulator. The calculation on the drawing is used to determine the output voltage for given values of R1 and R2.
Because these regulators have a minimum output voltage of 1.25 Volts diodes D3 and D4 will provide a voltage drop of approximately 1.4 Volts so that zero output to the track can be obtained. These diodes need to have at least a 3 amp rating
The diodes D1 and D2 added to the circuit will prevent damage to the regulator during certain adverse conditions such as the output voltage being higher than the input voltage to the regulator. This can happen if this type of circuit is used as a variable power supply for an electronics test bench and without the added protection of D3 and D4.
A substantial heat sink will be needed for the TTR as quite a bit of heat will be generated when drawing high current with low output volta

A truly timeless circuit. LM317 is a versatile and highly efficient 1.2-37V voltage regulator that can provide up to 1.5A of current with a large heat sink. It’s ideal for just about any application. This was my first workbench power supply and I still use it.
Since LM317 is protected against short-circuit, no fuse is necessary. Thanks to automatic thermal shutdown, it will turn off if heating excessively. All in all, a very powerful (and affordable!) package, indeed.
Although LM317 is capable of delivering up to 37V, the circuit pictured here is limited to 25V for the sake of safety and simplicity. Any higher output voltage would require additional components and a larger heat sink.
Make sure that the input voltage is at least a couple of Volts higher than the desired output. It’s ok to use a trimmer if you’re building a fixed-voltag

IC 78xx series of voltage regulators are available with different current outputs, you can boost
the available current output with this circuit. A power transistor is used to supply extra current to the load
the regulator, maintaining a constant voltage. Currents up to 650mA will flow through the regulator, above
this value and the power transistor will start to conduct, supplying the extra current to the load. This should
be on an adequate heat sink as it is likely to get rather hot. Suppose you use a 12v regulator, 7812. The
input voltage should be a few volts higher to allow for voltage drops. Assume 20 volts. Lets also assume
that the load will draw 5amps. The power dissipation in the transistor will be Vce * Ic or (20-12)*8=40watt.
It may keep you warm in the Winter, but you will need a large heatsink with good thermal dissipation.

Concerned over poor track record of Internet Service Providers, Indian telecom regulator TRAI has recommended lowering of foreign direct investment on par with telecom sector at 74 per cent from the existing 100 per cent. ISPs having 100 per cent FDI equity should be given two years for reducing foreign holding to 74 per cent, it said. In its recommendations to Department of Telecom, TRAI has also suggested major changes in financial and regulatory levies. Instead of free entry, it recommended levying an entry fee of up to Rs 20 lakh along with a uniform licence fee of six per cent of gross revenue. ISPs seeking licence at national level will have to pay Rs 20 lakh as entry fee while it will be Rs 10 lakh for state level ISPs. The minimum annual licence fee has been pegged at Rs 5,000 for district level ISP, Rs 10,000 for state level and Rs 50,000 for national level ISP. U.K. regulator Ofcom has handed down its first set of rules for VoIP telephony - what it is calling a "code of practice" . The rules apply to "softphone" VoIP calls from PCs, such as those between Skype and landline users (via the SkypeOut service), as well as to calls using broadband-connected VoIP adapters and standard phones.
