      Human Rights Poem (47): Refugee
Time for one of my own: Refugee (2), FIlip Spagnoli I’m a stranger, like hope in a world that doesn’t change or change in a world that doesn’t hope. And like all strangers I wash my hands separately, and I scratch my own back, and I no longer wonder ’bout the double meaning of “asylum” ‘cos there is none: you have to be [...]

      STOP ETHIOPIAN REFUGEE EXPLOITATION NOW!
Kaliti Blog (April 14) - I have been observing the increasing sexual exploitation of refugees in Kampala. The concerns are increasingly worrying. Rumors are no longer rumors as these issues are openly discussed among young female asylum seekers who are regularly being pressurized to do sexual favors and/or to pay bribe by refugee workers employed by intergovernmental agencies in Kampala.I, myself, have experienced the pressure and I am outraged by the behavior of some male officers who directly and indirectly ask for sexual favor in order to speed up my asylum case.I have also been in contact with several other young females especially from Ethiopia and Eritrea who have categorically been under similar pressure by these Ugandan officers who deal with asylum cases. However, many of these yo

Google maps give close-up view of UN refugee camps
By Laura MacInnis, GENEVA (Reuters, April 08) - Google technology first envisaged as a video game backdrop has been adapted to raise awareness -- and potentially financial support -- for the plight of refugees and vulnerable people once far from the public eye.The search engine's Google Earth platform, a mapping service that allows users to move through three-dimensional satellite images of city streets and countryside, now offers a close-up view of U.N. refugee camps and aid projects.Rebecca Moore, head of Earth Outreach for Google, said the browsable, high-definition pictures of humanitarian crisis zones stood to captivate a mass audience that may not otherwise see them. Many of the 350 million people who have downloaded Google Earth use it to scan for holiday destinations or to see what

Kimani Maruge is his name. You might never have heard of him. This Kenyan peasant farmer and great-grand father was illiterate all his life, until at the age of 83, he jumped at a belated opportunity to educate himself when free primary schooling was introduced in Kenya, five years ago.Maruge became something of a national celebrity and poster boy for free education campaigners worldwide. The U.N. even sponsored a trip for him to New York. Now, at the age of 88, he is faced with a new challenge. In the recent post-election violence, members of his Kikuyu tribe were attacked by gangs and Maruge became one of the 300,000 refugees around the country are still scared to return home.So every morning, "Mzee" as he is called - Swahili for 'elder' - gets out of his white Red Cross canvas tent at an

      Labour's ongoing gay refugee shame
In September 2003, Israfil Shiri, a gay Iranian asylum seeker, died after pouring petrol over himself and setting himself on fire in the offices of Refugee Action in Manchester, after his asylum claim was refused (in the lower and appeal court) and his deportation to Iran, where he would have been hanged, had been arranged. Iranian authorities had obtained documented evidence of his sexuality. In April 2005 Hussein Nasseri shot himself two weeks after his asylum claim was turned down by the Home Office, refusing in this way to let himself be killed by Iranian executioners. In 2005 then Home Secretary Charles Clarke was asked by Stonewall to intervene when an Appeal court judge used the following language in turning down a refugee's claim:'He [the asylum seeker] says he fled when he realised

Clashes reported in Palestinian refugee camp near Beirut
The incident involved a shootout with automatic rifles Friday morning in the Bourj el-Barajneh camp, south of Beirut. The officials said three people were wounded - two from the Palestinian mainstream Fatah group and one from the rival Syria-backed radical Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command. An official of the PFLP-GC in the camp, Ramez Mustafa, described the incident as a squabble between two families, the al-Bashirs and the al-Habets. He said the squabble erupted into a gunfight near the Palestinian group's offices after Friday noon prayers.Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are generally known for lawlessness and armed groups vying for control. The Nahr el-Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon was the scene of heavy fighting between Lebanese troops and al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militants from May to September. That battle left around 400 people dead, including Lebanese soldiers, Islamic militants and civilians. More...

Witchcraft allegations in Chad refugee camps
A refugee camp is a place that is quite nasty enough as it is, obviously, without the added grief of ridiculous nonsense like "witchcraft" allegations: When 11 refugees fell ill and died within a single week earlier this year at the Dosseye refugee camp in southern Chad, witchcraft allegations swirled through the community and led to cases of assault and arson. In one incident, three siblings died within an hour and Adjara, a widowed mother of eight in the camp, was attacked by 15 others who accused her of cursing the children. ... Josiane Nguerebaye, from UNHCR's community services team, said after the 11 deaths – mostly from diarrhoea, malaria and malnutrition – "other refugees really lost faith in their ability to recover from illnesses and lost faith in modern medicines." Many went exclusively to the traditional healers in the camps for treatment, and if they succumbed to their illnesses it was often explained as witchcraft. "People had stopped drinking the well water

Rumble: How Does It Feel To Become a Refugee?
In this post, Riverbend describes how it feels to leave Iraq. An excerpt:"We were all refugees- rich or poor. And refugees all look the same- there’s a unique expression you’ll find on their faces- relief, mixed with sorrow, tinged with apprehension. The faces almost all look the same. The first minutes after passing the border were overwhelming. Overwhelming relief and overwhelming sadness… How is it that only a stretch of several kilometers and maybe twenty minutes, so firmly segregates life from death?"Let us wish her well.Picture (unrelated to the Riverbend blog) courtesy CBS

      Warp Tour Refugee Camp
Last weekend while Live Earth concerts were promoting conservation and environmental awareness from all corners of the world, the Van’s Warp Tour blew threw Denver, apparently proving that it IS possible to completely fill up a parking lot ravine with garbage. Alas I was not at the tour as I was meandering through the Denver Museum of Nature and Science seeing the Titanic Artifacts Exhibit.  Although they could have upped the lights a bit -seeing the restored cups, saucers, steamer trunks, manifests, and ship parts that have been haunting the bottom of the ocean for the past 96 years was very interesting, especially considering that in another 100 years the remains of the Titanic will be nothing more than dust. Kudos to my very talented photographer friend who was working the Warp Tour and managed to escape with his expensive camera gear without being trampled or looted.  And in case you’re wondering he DID check, and the nice lady pictured below was breathing. 6/3/2007 6:23:01 AM Sunday,Lebanese troops continued shelling the Palestinian refugee camp in Northern Lebanon targeting militant-hideouts deep within the camp, according to reports. The Lebanese troops may have made significant inroads into the refugee camp, as evidenced by the artillery shelling and smoke arising from within the camp. In previous attacks the army often targeted outer areas of Nahr el-Bared camp in their bid to make progress. The militants are believed to have been forced to the southern part of the camp after fierce fighting with troops in the north and east. Lebanese sources said a top Fatah Islam militant Naim Deeb Ghali was killed, however no official confirmation was available with the ban on media in place. On Saturday, four soldiers were killed and 10 others injured in the fighting that ensued between government troops and militants. No Motive Known...A man who shot and killed five people and seriously injured four others at a Utah shopping mall Tuesday before being shot dead by police was a Muslim refugee from Bosnia, according to immigration officials.Police have said 18-year-old Sulejman Talovic, a legal permanent resident living with his mother, had four minor incidents with police when he was younger, the Salt Lake City Tribune reported. However, police did not know what the motive for the shooting was as of Wednesday. Also, he apparently did not know any of the people he had killed. The paper quoted an FBI agent as saying the bureau had no reason to believe the shooter had been motivated by religious extremism.Talovic was dressed in a trenchcoat carrying a shotgun, a .38 caliber pistol and a backpack full of ammunition, the city's police department told the paper. Talovic wanted "to kill a large number of people," said Police Chief Chris Burbank.Three of the dead were women, including one 15-year-old girl, ac
