      How Oil Refining Works
From Crude Oil The problem with crude oil is that it contains hundreds of different types of hydrocarbons all mixed together. You have to separate the different types of hydrocarbons to have anything useful. Fortunately there is an easy way to separate things, and this is what oil refining is all about.Different hydrocarbon chain lengths all have progressively higher boiling points, so they can al

      The Refining Process
The Refining Process As mentioned previously, a barrel of crude oil has a mixture of all sorts of hydrocarbons in it. Oil refining separates everything into useful substances. Chemists use the following steps:1. The oldest and most common way to separate things into various components (called fractions), is to do it using the differences in boiling temperature. This process is called fractional

Refining my ideas on China, with thanks to xiaoyong
A commenter here named xiaoyong has said some interesting things about my posts on China, the wider world, and Tibet. I know nothing about this person except that they are Chinese and that English is not their first language. They made some good points, though sometimes I couldn't understand what they were trying to say. When they made their first comment, I wanted to write something snarky like, "someone responds to posts about China overreacting by...overreacting." But there are some good points in there: China did raise the standard of living for many of its citizens. Tibet was a backwater before China took over. These things are true, but we need to have a discussion over whether the human rights violations required to obtain them were worth it.I may have been overly harsh in chara

Western Refining is the best play on Oil Refiners as the Oil Refining Season Kicks off
In terms of stock price action, oil refiners like Tesoro (TSO) and Valero (VLO) typify the oil refining cycles throughout a given year. I looked back at the last 3 years (2004-2007), and here is what I learnt. Oil refiners like VLO and TSO, bottomed out typically in Sept/Oct. They ran up until June, and then spent 3 months going down. The cycle repeated again in Sept/Oct.

Northwest Territorial Mint, Platinum Group Metals Refining Process
Ross Hansen The standard practice for refining Platinum Group Metals after they have been smelted involves a series a steps that rely on hydrometallurgy, or the use of chemical processes carried out in water-based solutions. Undertaken in stages, the leach and metal recovery processes conducted throughout the refining phase are designed to selectively extract nickel, iron, copper, and other base metals from the Platinum Group Metals. These activities produce a higher-grade PGM filter cake. The first step involves using an autoclave leach process (at 150 degrees Celsius) for partial oxidation of the bulk concentrate obtained from the smelter. This is frequently compared to a pressure cooker in which the desired minerals break down in preparation for the cyanidation process. The hot slurry released from the pressure cooker is allowed to continue to leach in a series of tanks open to the atmosphere. As a result, this process is often referred to as the ‘atmospheric leach circuit.&r

UNITED STATES: Valero warns about shrinking refining profits
Valero Energy Corp., the nation's largest independent oil refiner, said today it expects to report third-quarter earnings far short of Wall Street estimates because the cost of refined products hasn't kept up with rapidly rising crude costs. Earnings from continuing operations, excluding special items, are now expected to be $1.30 to $1.40 per share. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had been expecting earnings of $1.91 per share. Such forecasts typically exclude one-time items. Valero said its estimate does not include a $91 million pretax gain related to a loan repayment by a foreign subsidiary, or a $94.5 million payment for a stock repurchase program completed in July. Including those items, third-quarter earnings will be $1.25 to $1.35 per share, Valero said. The company said it also expects to report earnings from discontinued operations of approximately 75 cents per share related to the sale of its refinery in Lima, Ohio. In addition to higher crude costs, Valero said earni

      Israel-The Refining Fire
It's been a while since I've posted. For a while, I was very discouraged and felt out of strength. Too many problems, too many mountains to climb, not enough faith. I temporarily gave up. I somehow forgot that Hashem is more than powerful enough to help me get to where I know I need to be. It is now time to get back on track and work toward that goal. I will figure out how to get my family to Israel, bezrat Hashem, and I will work always to encourage other Jews to GO HOME, to make aliyah.I was re-reading an article that I'd like to mention here. Here is a little tidbit, then go read the whole article. Let me know what you think.Israel is a refining fire. It burns away falsehoods and melts away illusions.Mount Herzl, Israel’s military cemetery in the hills of Jerusalem, cradles tensof thousands of the brave young soldiers, who have sacrificed their lives for usto live. Refining Fire
`No bird soars too high if he soars with his own wings.’ William Blake As we walk down the creative path we will have dark moments as well as those filled with light. The dark moments are often the fire that refines our creative spirit and gets us back on track. When we are overcome by moments of dark or distress we have the choice to fight back or be overcome. If we make the choice to overcome it makes us stronger and once we have climbed the steps out of our mire we will find the creative energy flows with a new power and strength. It has taken some hard knocks for me to realize the fires in which I have been refined have always taken me up to a new place of greater light. I remember painting one work of an earlier series that was about taking those stairs to a place of hope and inspiration. As I painted all I felt was a heart full of tears and pain but later I realized just what this painting had been about for me and how it had a refining fire. Creativity Inspiration Listen
