An EU Referendum: We The People
As the news informs us that MPs have decided not to allow us a democratic vote on the Lisbon Treaty... The European Union and related issues is a topic that causes great schisms across most parties, one that is usually widest across the Conservative party, but recently it is the Lib Dems who have been most split by it, primarily over what we should have a referendum on, the "Libson Treaty" or EU membership itself. Referendums and Democracy Referendums are a form of direct democracy, whereby we the people answer a yes-or-no question on a subject of importance. In some countries, such as Switzerland, referendums are standard events. In others, such as here in the UK, they really aren't. After all, we have had only one referendum ever. Which just happened to be on entry to what is now the EU

MPs have rejected proposals to hold a UK-wide referendum on whether to ratify the EU's Lisbon Treaty. Don't you just love democracy? We are governed by a party which has only 20% of the electorate's support. It is led by a part-time MP job-sharing with an MSP. This man has deceived the country over his relationship with Prudence, who left him and us in the lurch with the Northern Rock fiasco, bad lending policies, higher taxes and a general high-handed approach to opposition. There never was going to be a referendum. The treaty is being pushed through Parliament by two political weasels, David Miliband and Jim Murphy. The people are going to have to think of something else to regain our democratic control over our lives.Frank Field is right. Politicians are held in low esteem and they mostly

Insurance Companies Seeking Ways to Mitigate the Insurance Fair Conduct Act (Referendum 67)
The Insurance Fair Conduct Act (formerly Referendum 67) was recently passed by Washington State voters last November.  This new law became effective Dec. 6, 2007.  And insurance companies are seeking ways to mitigate it's impact.  One attorney who represents insurance companies is giving advice to them on his own "insurance law blog."  All claims brought under the Insurance Fair Conduct Act must be preceded by a 20-day notice of the claim to the insurance company and the insurance commissioner. (The Office of the Insurance Commissioner has created a cover sheet for the notice.) An action may be brought only if the insurance company fails to resolve the basis for the action.  One defense to the claim is if the carrier relies on a "written opini

ON TAKING office as president last year, Evo Morales, a radical socialist of Andean Indian descent, promised to "refound" Bolivia on more democratic lines by means of a new constitution. But far from offering Bolivia a new start, the constitutional rewrite threatens to prolong a political confrontation that has seen two presidents overthrown since 2003. At a marathon 16-hour session held at a university in the highland city of Oruro on December 9th, a rump of the constituent assembly (164 of its 255 members, most supporters of Mr Morales) rubberstamped all of the 411 clauses of the new charter (bar one on landholding). But the opposition boycotted the session; it claims the document is illegal, since it was not approved by the required two-thirds majority of the assembly. Legal or not, the government'

The Bonds Indictment? Good For Baseball, Or A Referendum on The Home Run King?; Quick Hits: Hot Stove
In reading the multitude of blogs, news websites, and TV telecasts, I have gotten almost every view, angle, opinion, thought and word about the Bonds incident. This is now my definitive opinion in a nutshell. This is a referendum on his personality, his arrogance and the way he's treated people. The feds are going after him likes he's Tony Montana from "Scarface", not some athlete who decided to juice himself up. That's the issue I have -- and I don't think it's about race, though it can come into play somewhat in the reaction of some people.Bonds is not a criminal mastermind, he's a selfish athlete who pumped himself up with drugs to gain a competitive advantage in sports. It's not like he supplied enough drugs to feed a small city, or pump out enough product to create an army of wanna-be juiced up guys. The U.S. Government spent millions of dollars and resources to nail Bonds. In the end, he may have the chance to spend more time in jail than Victor Conte or any of his cohorts co

      FEA: Opposed to the referendum
Florida Education Association president Andy Ford called a press conference today to make crystal clear that the teachers' union does not support the property tax plan that will go to voters on Jan. 29. Educators back property tax reform, Ford said, but not at the expense of education. Which makes this proposal a non-starter. "The plan passed earlier this week does not hold public education harmless," he said. "It cuts, depending upon various estimates, an amount ranging from $1.8 billion to $3 billion from our public schools over the next five years and we have no assurance that the amount won't continue to grow when looked at over a longer period of time." To read his full remarks, read on."FEA has consistently stated that we are supportive of property tax relief for Florida's citizens … our members will benefit from these reductions as many of them, like many of you, are property owners.  However, we have also said that we would support a prope

      Tempelhof’s referendum rescue?
Ist Tempelhof doch noch zu retten? Does this airport have a chance to survive after all? It appears that if enough Berlin voters care, good old Flughafen Tempelhof might just beat the odds and be allowed to stay in operation after Berlin Brandenburg International airport opens in 2011. Three business associations have begun a campaign to keep centrally located Tempelhof open. And who should know better than they if this airport can hold its own or not? They believe that Tempelhof should be dedicated to smaller business aircraft and regional operators which will otherwise play second fiddle to the bigger airlines at Brandenburg. The businessmen argue that Brandenburg “will not have enough capacity from day one… Tempelhof has around 200,000 movements a year, which could easily be increased to 1.5 million.” At any rate, if 170,000 signatures in favor of a referendum can be gathered by February 14, the real referendum can be held some time next year. And should 25% then vote

Overseas Chinese in Indonesia denounce Taiwan referendum plan
The Council for the Promotion of China's Peaceful Reunificationin Indonesia held a symposium in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia and capital of East Java province, voicing opposition to the Taiwan authorities' pursuit of entry to the United Nations. The move is a grave provocation by the Taiwan authorities and disregards the interests of Taiwan's 23 million residents, Wu Junliang, chairman of the council, told the gathering. He added that it is a threat not only to the situation across the Taiwan Strait, but to peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. All of the Chinese in Indonesia are firmly behind the "one-China" policy constantly followed by the Indonesian government, and they resolutely oppose provocative activities by secessionists in Taiwan to split China and undermine regional peace, Wu said.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com

Presidential Run by Indonesian Cleric Would Be Referendum on Shariah Law
On the day of his release, a smiling Bashir told reporters: "I thank Allah that I am free today. I call on all Muslims to unite behind one goal, which is the implementation of Shariah law."When, in May 1998, former President Suharto's 32-year rule came to an end, Indonesia, a secular nation with the world's largest Muslim population, started a democratization process that has been praised worldwide. However, democracy has also opened the door for a previously dormant wing of radical Islam that wants to turn the country into an Islamic state. The clash between the two could soon be played out in the voting booth if, as suggested late last month by Indonesian Mujahedin Council (MMI) spokesman Fauzan al-Anshori, radical Islamic cleric Abu Bakar Bashir decides to run for president in the country's next election, slated for 2009. "Bashir is considering the possibility," al-Anshori told Italian news agency AdnKronos International May 30. "He said that he wants to see what the people say

      Referendum.
