It’s earnings season again. But with an odd twist. You see, most investors realized that earnings season would be dismal; so when the results came in (pretty much) as expected, many investors seemed to find that the news (especially among financials) was not worse and went on a buying spree. By watching the trading "tape," you almost could "hear" what investors were thinking: JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) announces a 50% decline in first-quarter profits, and says markets will remain weak through the rest of this year and perhaps into next: No problem. As bad as the results were, they were actually better than Wall Street expected.Citigroup Inc. (C) says it lost $5.1 billion on a 48% decline in revenue and will slash 9,000 jobs - that’s great! The latest outlook from the National Association of Home Builders foresees a full recovery in the housing sector being delayed until 2010. While this date has been largely debated by economists and other housing experts, I can't recall any other time before this when the NAHB has actually agreed with the assessment. From a CNNMoney.com story:Demand for new homes may not return to normal levels until next decade, according to the latest outlook from the National Association of Home Builders."Traditionally when housing has been in a recession, it recovers very quickly. We don't see that happening this time," said Jerry Howard, CEO of the builders' trade group. "It could be 2010 before we see sustainable, long-term stability in the home building sector."As recently as the end of 2007, the t

Dow Jones broke out of it's major resistive trendline two closings ago and it ended with a doji candlestick. In my opinion, this is not just another technical rebound which we have seen for the past few months. Usually after DJIA ends with a huge white candlestick, the next day will likely to be a black candlestick but for this time round, we are only see a doji. However, the volume looks suspect since it is so light and this is not what is expected of a strong rebound. The next resistance level is around 12785 which was the resistance on two previous occasions.Dow Jones Industrial Average:For the Straits Times Index, it broke out of it's resistive trendline too and it was accompanied by heavy volume. There is a gap resistance at around 3000 but i think it should not be a concern since STI

Utah poised for rebound That is the prediction of area economists By JEFF DEMOSS Standard-Examiner staff jdemoss@standard.net SALT LAKE CITY - While the current economic picture looks bleak, fears about recession may actually help Utah and the United States avoid that fate, two leading local economists said Wednesday. A growing number of economic experts are saying the U.S. is either headed for a recession or is already in one, but the current situation is really more of a "fear-session," said Kelly Matthews, vice president and economist for Wells Fargo in Utah. Economic growth in Utah will slow noticeably this year, but the state should remain in positive growth mode for the foreseeable future, according to new forecast
But rebounding against the Coyotes will not be an easy task. Phoenix is fighting hard for a playoff spot and is 5 points out of 8th. Coach Gretzky recently said: “We’re battling for our lives now, we know that…We know we have our work cut out for us, but we’re not out of this by any means. Nobody in our locker room is gonna throw in the towel.” And they won't. Backed by a top goalie in Ilya Bryzgalov, this team, although inconsistent, can compete with the big dogs and are not to be taken lightly. The Canucks will look for a more consistent start tonight. They came out of the gate flying against the Ducks, but then took most of the rest of the night off. I know Luongo wants to play in every game, but maybe Sanford should start tonight. That would not only send a message to Louie t

Indonesian shares were sharply higher in early trade Wednesday on a technical rebound driven by a strong rally on Wall Street overnight, ending a three-day fall The Dow posted its biggest gain in more than five years Tuesday after the Federal Reserve and other central banks announced a series of moves to pump more liquidity into the financial system to ease a credit crunch. The Fed -- acting with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Canada and the Swiss National Bank -- agreed to loan investment banks money in exchange for debt, including troubled mortgage-backed securities. Gains on the Jakarta bourse were led by big caps such as index heavyweight Telkom, conglomerate Astra International and coal giant Bumi Resources, as well as banks and miners. The Fed jumped in this morning in an attempt to halt the slide in the market. It's yet another bailout plan aimed at stabilizing the mortgage market. It's unlikely that the Fed's latest move will have a lasting impact, but in the short-term it might serve as a catalyst for a rally. I'm talking about a rally that lasts more than just one day.Curiously, among the various groups of the market, one that is holding up quite well is the homebuilder sector. It's strange because the residential real estate market is crumbling, yet the homebuilders aren't hitting new lows.In fact, the S&P Homebuilders Index (XHB) is trading well above its January lows. Moreover, it's formed a head and shoulders bottom over the last four months. Keep a close watch on this ETF, which is a basket of home build
Overnight closing of Dow in negative once again dragged down the morning session. But cool enough, market rallied in the afternoon session and close amazingly in the green suggesting something could be cooking in Dow tonight. True enough, Dow is now up 200 points plus. Honestly speaking, i too was tempted to long some stocks as i could see many candlestick reversal patterns around. Notably in some of the China shares i'm tracking. However i held back. I prefered not to guess a reversal or bottom and just let the price tells me where is it heading. A break above 20 day moving average will be a good sign. Infact there are still a couple of stocks trading above 20dma and some are even on an uptrend. I secretly load up on one last week and despite the plunge, it was unscathed! keke, i
From the looks for the Dow Jones chart, it seems that DJIA is poised for a rebound soon. Currently, it is residing on the fibbonacci 23.6% support level. The last 3 candlesticks had a long tails which resemble tweezers bottoms so in my opinion, these factors suggest a rebound should be near soon. The next resistance level will be around 12750.Dow Jones Industrial Average:For the chart of the Straits Times Index, it formed a island reversal formation and that signifies a downtrend. Following this, there was a huge gap down and this gap will be acting as a resistance level. Since i expect the DJIA to be rebounding soon, i believe STI will be following suit.Straits Times Index:However, both of the intermediate trends for both STI and DJIA are still down. Remember that the subprime issue is no
If everything goes well, we could have seen the short-term bottom at Tuesday Low. I longed cosco taking that low as my support. My view is, that should be the low and we are heading for a rebound. This rebound should take us to STI 3100s thereabts and I will look out and becareful for dumping again. Conditions that favour this rebound include Fed's rate cut and more cuts to come when they meet? Also the traditional CNY rally. Earnings so far is disappointing. The bearish breakout finally happened. Many descending triangles gave way. It was a pretty ugly sight. Along the way, when the descending triangles were forming, we had many decent rebounds. I got vested at one such rebound last month but only had to cut as there was no follow through buying. Follow through buying is a sign of bull market marked with tame selling. What I saw was gains very cheaply given back to the market by the brutal selling, volatile market actions...etc.. all these are not signs of bull market. As of now, i still do not see signs of a bottom as yet. STI is now officially trading below the 200DMA. This is where in wall street they regard it as a bearish sign. All you need to do is to check 1997 and year 2000... compare the relationship between 200dma and STI, you

I've heard all the bad news I can stomoch, the media is basically spending every day and every hour looking for more bad news in housing. Let's be honest most of the news is "old news" and happened months ago. Transparent Real Estate does a nice job tearing the "bad news" being reported apart and looking at the good news inside for the future. No, the dollar won't crash. Yes, inventories are high, but frankly that means now is the best time to buy, before those inventories start to decrease and prices regain traction. Three predictions on stocks, the Fed and housing "The housing market will turn around on a change in consumer perception. Three things will happen: 1) lower interest rates will stimulate demand for housing stock not affected by subprime, 2) lenders will start lending again, after all it is their business model (now, it's harder for consumers to qualify for loans due to problems with the credit market, not their individual credit quality), and 3) pent up buyer demand

The closing on Friday for the Dow Jones was interesting to some extent. There were 2 important technical factors that can be gleamed from the chart. The first would be that DJIA form a breakout of the channel resistance. DJIA has been trending in this downward channel for the past month and a breakout of the channel resistance seems to be a piece of bullish news. However, if one takes another look at the volume, u can see that the volume was extremely light. For this closing alone, volume does not confirms index action thus the rally was not a 'true' rally. If we looked at the previous drop in Aug, we can see that there was a hammer formed with an extremely long tail. I browsed through the CNA forum and some of them shared that on that day itself, there was panic selling so the index dip til a very low level. The funds took advantage of this and decides to load in at a cheap price and that explains the very long tail and the heavy volume. So right now, i guess this is not happening. I

By Becky Bohrer, Associated Press WriterNearly two-thirds of the city's pre-Hurricane Katrina population has returned, a new report estimates. But Greg Rigamer, the demographer who compiled the report, said Tuesday that he expects the growth seen since July 2006 to plateau within the next year as the sense of urgency to return lessens.Rigamer, whose company, GCR & Associates, has been tracking demographics in post-Katrina New Orleans, said an estimated 288,000 people were living in New Orleans in October. In July 2005, the month before Katrina hit and flooded 80 percent of the city, the population was estimated at 455,000.Between Oct. 1, 2006, and Oct. 1, 2007, New Orleans' population grew 19 percent. But that growth rate may not continue, Rigamer said."Given the state of the schools and the criminal justice system, it's hard to understand why the trend has been occurring so long, this long after" Katrina, he said.Rigamer's report, released late Monday, was based on utility hookups.
Dow Jones bounced off it's channel resistance yesterday night. This means that the rebound is only a technical rebound and not the start of a bull run. Next possible action is that the Dow will head back towards the channel support. Since Dow closed badly, i believe STI should also rebound off it's channel resistance today. It feel almost eerie that the simple concept of trendlines work so well at times. I drew the blue line connecting the previous 2 tops of this current downtrend. It's such a strange thing that the Dow Jone rebounded off this line after it touches it as if that Uncle Dow knows that it must rebound off this line dat i have drawn :pDow Jones Industrial Average:

Residential real estate trends for 2008

2) The mortgage industry will be back to normal — and healthier than before — sometime around mid-year.
3) The pace of new home-building will continue to slow, especially for condos, and some proposed projects will be put on hold or cancelled.

Will ISM Non-Manufacturing Signal A Rebound In Friday's NFP Report?ISM Non-Manufacturing (SEP) (10:00 EST; 14:00 GMT)Expected: 54.6Previous: 55.8How Will The Markets React? Conditions in the US non-manufacturing sectors - which account for approximately 70 percent of total economic activity in the country and include retail, services, and finance - are anticipated to have deteriorated during September, as the Institute for Supply Management index is estimated to fall to 54.6 from 55.8. The highest readings we've seen in the non-manufacturing report have consistently been in the ‘prices paid' component, which has only underpinned Federal Reserve Bank inflation hawks' concerns. However, the price index is expected to ease back for the third consecutive month in September, supporting broad market speculation of additional rate cuts by the central bank throughout the rest of the year. Furthermore, the ‘employment' component unex
A distinctive pianist whose unique, slip-note playing style came to typify the pop-oriented Nashville sound of the late '50s and early '60s, session and solo musician Floyd Cramer was born October 27, 1933, in Louisiana. After a childhood spent largely in Arkansas, he returned to his home state in 1951 and began appearing on the radio program The Louisiana Hayride, where he performed with the likes of Jim Reeves, Faron Young, Webb Pierce, and, in his debut, Elvis Presley. While Cramer cut a few solo sides in 1953, his most important work in the early '50s was as a session musician, where he first met Chet Atkins, who encouraged the pianist to move to Nashville. He did in 1955, rejoining Atkins as the house pianist at RCA Records to begin developing what would ultimately be recognized as the Nashville sound, a style shorn of the elements associated with traditional country and honky tonk instead favoring a more polished, progressive sheen. With Atkins behind the production boards, Cra
The major US stock indices are within 2% of their highs for the year (and all-time highs for the Dow and S&P 500). In the past eight weeks they have gyrated from these levels to down 10%, then back up. This illustrates the speed of corrections and price movements in today’s electronic and global markets. It also illustrates the folly of market timing and why, unless you’re glued to your screen every day, you should invest for the long term and not try to outguess the market.
Over the next few weeks the markets may hit new highs, while moving in a choppy sideways pattern. The drivers will be the economy and earnings. The principal economic event to watch is new jobs creation. Secondarily, watch real wage growth and retail sales. Rating: 0 Posted By: puppyfriend Views: 148 Replies: 3 I've been looking at these for sometime now. I finally asked how much they were and the MicroCenter dude said "It's a penny." I thought he was joking so I said "I'd like a thousand." He wasn't joking. Neither was I. Sadly, a thousand won't fit in my WRX.Anyways, don't confuse these with low end sleeves like ZeroShock and Booq. These are high quality. The thing I love about them is that it's padded in every direction. The ZeroShocks and Booqs have no or little padding on the sides. The zippers are also exposed so that it scratches up your laptop. The STMs have that high density foam padding all the way around, including over the zippers. So nothing touches your laptop to harm it.Here's the manufacturer link. The three types I bought have the following product numbers:253054 STM Rebound 12" Powerbook, khaki252825 STM Rebound 12" iBook, khaki252759 STM Rebound 12" iBook, greyThis was at the Santa Clara store. Stocks Move Moderately Higher Following Global Selloff, Weak Bonds
NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street, trying to reverse three days of sharp losses, rose moderately in shaky trading Friday as Treasury yields retreated from overnight highs.Chicago Federal Reserve President Michael Moskow said in an interview with CNBC that while inflation is the predominant concern for the Fed, inflation expectations are well-contained and the current benchmark interest rate is appropriate for now.

A narrowing of the trade deficit also calmed the markets a bit. The Commerce Department reported that the gap narrowed 6.2 percent to $58.5 billion in April after widening to a six-month high of $63.9 billion in March.
The 10-year Treasury note’s yield shot up briefly in overnight trading to 5.25 percent — the Federal Reserve’s current benchmark interest rate — then pulled back to 5.16 percent in early New York trading, still up from late Thursday’s level of 5.13 pe

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. ” ~Confucius~
Most of us have heard this famous quote before. Confucius states that you can’t achieve a goal, unless you start a goal. However, a single breach in commitment starts the downward spiral of your success.
Your integrity, the promise you make to yourself, is the only thing of value that you really have. The reasoning is that money, health, and friends can all come and go, but your promises and decisions are things you’ll have to live with for the rest of your life.
The only thing that stands in between you and achieving your goal is your commitment to yourself. Having high integrity with your goals means that you’ll find a way to accomplish them, no matter what it takes.
I’ve mentioned that it only takes one breach of integrity to break a commitment. That means, having just one scoop of ice cream, missing one workout, or stealing one kiss is enough to break the contract that you&rs
The above chart shows the S&P 500 back at an important test level of the 50% fibonacci area. This 1410 neck of the woods has proven to be tough resistance. Also for the first time since the Feb 27th pull back, the S&P is above its 20 day moving average. MACD has also flashed a turn to the positive and RSI is closing in on 50. It would not be a complete surprise if the S&P made its way to

Gotta love this volatility. I'm standing pat on my VIX calls and a variety of other put plays going out to August (Aug because I had to escape crazy nearer month volatilaties). The remaining VIX calls I have are at the expense of the house's money after the ones I sold on Tuesday had mostly quintupled and in a few rose by nearly 7 fold. In other words, I can afford to wait and see what happens in these extraordinary market conditions. Remember, this is 2007. There are a lot of newbies out there and I'm not talking on the message boards, or blogs - I'm talking newbies running money at hedge funds who aren't used to things like bear-0-ramas and corrections. This morning's spike in the VIX again is telling me that some guys and perhaps gals with lots of money - maybe too much - are in over their heads with too much leverage. There's a certain growing element of contagion that I'm going to stick around and watch with morbid amusement while hopefully further profiting. Quite frankl
Man, that title… So freaking clever, I don’t know where I come up with these things. Seriously, it’s like a gift you know? It’s like I can’t control it (bonus points to anyone who can correctly identify the movie that line references).
Anyway, the BasketVols were able to overcome their two losses in the Garden and a second half rally by the Ragin’ Cajuns to defeat Louisiana-Lafayette with the help of Chris Lofton’s three point shooting. Chris was able to “Lofton” into the bucket from three point range to put the game out of reach for the Cajuns. Holy crap, that last sentence was awesome. Okay, okay, I’ll stop.
Tennessee moved to 5-2 on the season, and will gear up for the annual barnburner that is the match against Murray State on the first of December. Enjoy folks.
The headlines said it all… “Bay State Home Sales Rebound in January”, “State’s Home Sales Rebound”, “Mass Housing Market Bouncing Back”.Or, maybe MAR President Doug Azarian summed it up with the following guarded optimism:“We are encouraged about the way January has started off… As sellers continue to price their homes correctly, we should begin to see demand pick up, inventories go down, and the market becoming more balanced.Obviously, looking at the numbers there is a significant increase to single family home sales this January versus the results of January 2006.Of course we could debate about the MARs numbers and The Warren Groups numbers but for sake of simplicity let’s just consider the MAR numbers.First, keep in mind, Boston as well as the whole of the Northeast has experienced exceptionally mild weather in January allowing for many more days of buying activity than would have otherwise occurred. But even given the mild weather, the 2744 units sold are still
