      Local Colour and Realism
Before I move on to discuss strategies for colour schemes in producing artwork, it struck me that I needed to explain about 'Local Colour' and its role in art. Try looking for definitions of 'local colour' on the web and you'll often find explanations rooted in literature, where interestingly it often seems to mean introducing aspects of local life which are distinct and different. Here are a

From Climate Alarmism to Climate Realism
By Václav Klaus Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, I would like first of all to thank the organizers of this important conference for making it possible and also for inviting one politically incorrect politician from Central Europe to come and speak here. This meeting will undoubtedly make a significant contribution to the moving away from the irrational climate alarmism to the much needed cli

Classical Realism: Antidote to 'Novelty Art'
If large precincts of the art world are still in thrall to 'novelty art,' there is also a vital and increasingly prominent current of artistic practice seeking the rehabilitation of aesthetic canons and plastic techniques that were pioneered in the Renaissance and promulgated in the studios1 Vote(s)

Chaucer's Realism in “The Canterbury Tales”
Literature is the mirror of its age. Supreme literary artist is one who becomes a mouthpiece and provides a real picture of his age with its minute details. Chaucer is a perfect representative of his age. He is in true sense a social chronicler of England. His poetry reflects the 14th century not in fragment but as a complete whole. Realism of Chaucer in “The Canterbury Tales” not gives us th

Realism on Energy and Climate Change
John Taylor correctly pointed out yesterday that as unpopular as high gas prices may be, they are not all bad: high prices typically encourage conservation and efficiency technologies that should help us both to limit our oil dependence and to stem the growth in greenhouse gas emissions.  Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, both of [...]

Even More “Mario Bros. Realism Concept Art” Reminds Us How Odd The Cat Really Looks…
Albeit this isn’t the first attempt of recreating Mario the Super Brother we have seen here before, its definitely the most realistic. If Mario really existed in this day and age, I suppose he would look a little something like this dude here, one uncannyass looking plumber. Designed by Pixeloo, the photo real image was [...]

      Realism in 'Joseph Andrews'
Henry Fielding was the pioneer of realism in English fiction. Both Fielding and Richardson were broadly speaking realists. Fielding also reacted against Richardson’s sentimentalism as a falsifying influence on the study of reality, although he does not reject sentimentalism altogether. “His desire”, says Cazamian, “is to give sentiment its right place; but also to integrate it in an organic series of tendencies where each contributes to maintain a mutual balance.”Fielding is one of the few writers who, despite the wideness of their scope are capable of observing the demands of reality with perpetual ease. His novels hold up to view a representative picture of his age. He is as authentic a chronicler of his day as Chaucer was of the later fourteenth century. Fielding’s truth is n

Large Captains Cereal Realism Still Life
Lately, I've become a little nostalgic. Since my kids are getting older, the days of morning cereal with my kids have long been gone. As a kid, the Captains cereal has been one of my favorites. The awesome imagery and colors of this design is really one of a kind in American produce and advertising. This semi contemporary painting borders on realism and pop art. Whatever the case, any excuse to capture the wonderful realism of this great America classic is fine by me.SOLD

      Pass the Realism, Please
What does it mean when Ron Paul says that the Bush Administration and all the interchangeable candidates who are committed to continuing down the same foreign policy path are the real isolationists? It means that the hostility felt from the rest of the world grows in direct proportion to the extent of our drift from the moorings of realism. As Andrew Bacevich put the matter, realismcounsels modesty of purpose and an acute sensitivity to the prospect of unintended consequences. For realists, the notion that globalization (according to Bill Clinton, channeling the neoliberal New York Times columnist Tom Friedman) will produce global harmony or that American assertiveness (according to George W. Bush, channeling Bill Kristol, editor of the neoconservative Weekly Standard) will "transform" the Greater Middle East is pure folly. Americans, wrote Niebuhr in his book "The Irony of American History" (1952), fancy themselves to be "tutors of mankind in its pilgrimage to perfection." But the huma

      Howard Zinn On Machiavellian Realism
Consider how often a parent (usually a father) has said to a son or daughter: “It’s good to have idealistic visions of a better world, but you’re living in the real world, so act accordingly.” How many times have the dreams of young people-the desire to help others; to devote their lives to the sick or the poor; or to poetry, music, or drama-been demeaned as foolish romanticism, impractical in a world where one must “make a living”? Indeed, the economic system reinforces the same idea by rewarding those who spend their lives on “practical” pursuits-while making life difficult for the artist, poets, nurses, teachers, and social workers. Another “realism” Super Mario Bros. Picture
Yea, its weird as hell ain’t it? But I can’t stop looking at it… This picture seriously really put into perspective how odd the premise of the “Super Mario Bros” franchise it really is. Shigeru Miyamoto had to be on some shrooms or somethin’ when he created this joint… As you can see above you got racoon Mario stomping a Goomba out, and Luigi tossing a Koopa Troopa shell into another unsuspecting Koopa Troopa. If you also look behind him you’ll see a Laikitu about to bomb the brothers with a spiked egg not to mention the Piranha Plant & Boomerang Bro. Super Mario Brothers isn’t as innocent as you thought it was folks… Related Posts80s babies rejoice, the Mario mouse(s) are here…The hardest Super Mario Bros. level EVER (with NSFW commentary)“Mario vs. Bowser scwabbing” how it should look like…

Adding some realism to WiMAX and xMax
How realistic are claims of both WiMAX and xMax when it comes to cost savings on network build-outs, relative to GSM or CDMA-based networks? I suppose a good deal of common sense (if not scepticism) is needed. Just to add a thought on each: WiMAX: in this release it is revealed that the range is limited to just 0.75-1.00 miles when indoor-coverage is needed to deliver 5 Mbps. Remember that

      The Realism of Video Games
By Micheal ColeyRemember the good old days of video games? Funny and imaginative characters would embark on a funny and imaginative adventure in a funny and imaginative world. Those simple and harmless days seem to be ancient history today. Today, many video games created for the Xbox 360 use real world events as their source of inspiration. Video games used to be a diversion from reality, and now, they are another window into it. And, that can either be a good thing or a bad thing.Take a look at one of the most popular video game franchises in history: Super Mario Bros. A plumber falls through a pipe and enters a world where he must rescue a princess, defeat and evil monster and navigate a world full of mushrooms, blocks, question marks and goombas. No matter how imaginative one's imagination could be, there is simply no way that such an occurrence could happen in this world, like, for real. So, the illusion of the game remains intact. Now, if you look at today's video games for popu

Realism and Perception: Where the Orioles Stand…
This morning, I was reading the Baltimore Sun and caught a piece by Sheil Kapadia titled What They’re Saying About the Orioles: A Roundup of National Press Coverage. I decided to expand a little on the piece, add a few more quotes and give my opinion. The Orioles did get a lot better; however, the team did not make the sexy moves like we here wanted. In light of it all, the Orioles will not be in cellar unless Tejada or one of the big bats ends up hurt for half the season. I think a lot of these writers and so-called media experts have tunnel vision and have been looking way, way too much in the past. Simply put, some of these people can not see the forest from the trees here. Over the past few years, the Orioles in the media have been burnt, toasted and burnt to a crisp thanks to some of the so-called experts in the media and on TV. I am resigned to say we will not win the division, but the team is very much improved and a third place finish is not out of the realm of

      God and Non-Realism
I am ready for topic three in my theology for the 21st century. To wit, I am going stop here with God and check back in on her later. But before taking leave of God I wish to introduce radical theologian, Don Cupitt. In the tradition of the French Post-modernists a la Jacques Derrida, Cupitt is a non-realist. Here is a helpful description:Realists think that scientists discover 'the laws of Nature', whereas non-realists think that scientists invent theories that help us to tell stories about why things go the way they do, and to predict outcomes successfully. Today, a realist is the sort of person who, when his ship crosses the Equator, looks overboard, expecting to see a big black line across the ocean. Realism tries to turn cultural fictions into objective facts. A non-realist sees the whole system of lines of latitude and longitude as a valuable fiction, imposed upon the Earth by us, that helps us to define locations and to find our way around. For a realist Truth exi
