On Monday 22 October, we published an alert about a serious vulnerability that affects RealPlayer 10.5 and RealPlayer 11 beta running on Windows. By enticing one of your users to a malicious Web site, an attacker can exploit this vulnerability to execute code on your user’s computer, with your user’s privileges. The compnay's Security Response team uncovered new attack code that affects the RealPlayer 11 beta and RealPlayer 10.5 software on the Windows platform, according to Ben Greenbaum, a senior manager with the group. Symantec has already confirmed that the attack code works on Windows XP Service Pack 1 running Internet Explorer 6. Tests for the more-recent XP service pack 2 and IE 7 browser were ongoing. For the attack to work, the criminal would have to trick the victim into playing a maliciously encoded web page. The flaw lies in a browser helper object, software that RealPlayer uses to help users who are experiencing technical difficulties. Once the exploit is run on the victim's machine, the attacker can download and install whatever software he wants, Greenbaum said. So far, Symantec has just seen the one sample of the attack code,

Symantec Corporation has issued an alert that rated a threat with its highest possible score after finding attackers exploiting a zero-day vulnerability in RealPlayer that infects Windows machines running Internet Explorer. An ActiveX control installed by RealNetworks Incorporated's RealPlayer program is flawed in such a way that it can be exploited and malicious code downloaded to any PC that wanders to a specially crafted site.
Only systems on which both RealPlayer and IE have been installed are vulnerable. Multiple versions of RealPlayer install the ActiveX control, including the current 10.5 and the beta of Version 11. RealNetworks has not released a fix, but Symantec said it had informed the media player's maker of the bug. Until RealNetworks releases a patch, Symantec said the best advice it can give is to disable the vulnerable ActiveX control but this requires editing the Windows registry.

Does someone remember this thing? It was very popular some time ago but the truth is with the passage of time people started to forget about it, to be honest, it never convinced me, i used it some time but it was a resource-killer and it didn’t work like it should.
But RealPlayer guys pretend to make it better with the new version of RealPlayer, it seems that you will be able to download videos from Youtube, Google, Yahoo, etc. and convert them without using a third party tool. Performance and seems to be better now and it will have more features than other versions.
Bad part is that it will recogniza DRM files and you won’t be able to download them

RealNetworks have announced a new version of RealPlayer that includes one-click video ripping. The free download able video player will allows users to save and organize video files in all major formats including Flash, QuickTime, RealMedia and Window Media and will support video ripping from sites such as YouTube, Google, Yahoo!, Brightcove, AOL and The New York Times. The ability to rip online videos is not new. A number of programs are already available that provide a similar service yet this is the first time this level of functionality has been offered in a high user base product.
