President Reagan 1981 Inaugural Address [Digg]
President Reagan delivered his first inaugural address on January 20, 1981.FTA Idle industries have cast workers into unemployment, causing human misery and personal indignity. Those who do work are denied a fair return for their labor by a tax system which penalizes successful achievement and keeps us from maintaining full productivity.

Peggy Noonan Finds Modern Republicans To Be Too Extreme For Ronald Reagan
In some ways I am really happy to see the rise of Huckabee in the Republican race as this is causing many conservatives to question the direction the party has moved. In the past Republicans such as Ronald Reagan have used the religious right to get votes but have typically only thrown them a few bones. Now that the religious right has become dominant in the party, many Republicans are questioning whether this is the direction they really want the party to move in. Peggy Noonan writes that the increased importance of religion in the Republican race is not progress. She writes: Christian conservatives have been rising, most recently, for 30 years in national politics, since they helped elect Jimmy Carter. They care about the religious faith of their leaders, and their interest is legitimate. Faith is a shaping force. Lincoln got grilled on it. Ronald Reagan and the Cold War
A favorite conservative myth is that Ronald Reagan won the cold war when largely he was just the American president who happened to be in office at the right time. The real hero was Gorbachev who realized the futility of continuing the cold war. Ronald Reagan does deserve credit too, but not for standing up to the Soviet Union but for being willing to understand that situations had changed and his old policies no longer applied. Reagan also differed from many other hard line conservatives in also dreaming of a world without nuclear weapons. Martin Walker discusses these points in a review of books on nuclear weapons for The New York Times Sunday Book Review: According to both Schell and Rhodes, the cold war ended not because Reagan stood firm at Reykjavik but because Gorbachev and his supporters had already decided to stop waging it, or as Gorbachev’s adviser Giorgy Arbatov once put it to this reviewer in Moscow, “to take your enemy away.” Gorbachev understood that the arms race

      Was Reagan A Racist?
One presidential candidate is lighting up the New York Times Opinion page with impassioned attacks and defenses. No, it’s not Barack Obama, Ron Paul, Hillary Clinton, Mike Huckabee, Jon Edwards, Rudy Giuliani, Dennis Kucinich, or Mitt Romney. It’s Ronald Reagan. The crucial question of the day, if you’re reading the New York Times Opinion pages at least, is whether or not Ronald Reagan was making a veiled appeal to the Southern white electorate in his 1980 campaign. The claim, made many times by columnists Paul Krugman and Bob Herbert, is that Reagan, by speaking about “state’s rights” when he visited the Neshoba County Fair outside of Philadelphia, Mississippi in 1980, was sending a conscious message to white racists that he was on their side. Because Philadelphia was famously the location of the murder of three civil rights activists in 1964, the choice of location was both an intentional and powerful message by the Gipper that, like Nixon and Gold

Former Reagan Official Warns Bush Might Attack US
On July 20, 2007, Paul Craig Roberts, the former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration, issued a public warning that "we are about to experience another 9/11-WMD experience" orchestrated by the current occupants of the White House. The purpose, he says, of attacking his own country is that "an attack will activate Bush’s new executive orders, which create a dictatorial police state in event of “national emergency.” He's referring to NSPD-51, in which Bush gave himself the powers to do just that. The Russian media, which published this story today, add that the "staged attack" would also be used to launch a war with Iran.I'm not trying to be a conspiracy theorist, but a very scary picture emerges when you put the facts in a timeline:September 11, 2001 - The United States is attacked. Bush uses the attack on 9/11 to enact the Patriot Act, start a war with Afghanistan, and start a war with Iraq (there's obviously much more, but let's keep it brief).Oct

Iowa Remains Four Way Race; Bush is No Reagan
The latest Strategic Vision poll shows that there’s still a four way race in Iowa. John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama are virtually tied. Bill Richardson trails in fourth place, which happens to be the spot where John Kerry was before he came from behind to win in the final days before the 2004 caucus. The results: John Edwards 23% Barack Obama 22% Hillary Clinton 21% Bill Richardson 14% Joseph Biden 5% Chris Dodd 1% Dennis Kucinich 1% Undecided 13% Mitt Romney remains well in front of the Republican field. Following his second place showing in the straw poll, Mike Huckabee is tied with John McCain for fourth. Ron Paul is in seventh place with only 3%. It must be disappointing to place so low when so many voters of both parties in Iowa favor withdrawal from Iraq: Do you favor a withdrawal of all United States military from Iraq within the next six months? (Republicans Only) Yes 51% No 39% Undecided 10% It is a good thing for George Bush that he is no

Ronald Reagan on George W. Bush?
Did Reagan really write this? “A moment I’ve been dreading. [Vice President] George [H.W. Bush] brought his ne’er-do-well son around this morning and asked me to find the kid a job. Not the political one who lives in Florida. The one who hangs around here all the time looking shiftless. This so-called kid is already almost 40 and has never had a real job. Maybe I’ll call Kinsley over at The New Republic and see if they’ll hire him as a contributing editor or something. That looks like easy work This quote is being sent around the internet, reportedly from Ronald Reagan’s diary entry from May 28, 1986. I’ll be stuck in the office for several more hours and cannot verify this. Anyone have a copy of the book handy to verify it? Update: As suspected, the quote is a hoax.

Michael K. Deaver, adviser to President Ronald Reagan Dies aged 69
The close adviser to President Ronald Reagan, Michael K. Deaver has died today at his home in Bethesda Md, he was aged just 69. The family released a statement which said the cause of death was pancreatic cancer. Michael Deaver was known for being able to manipulate the media on what the president said and looked like, he was able to do his job of protecting the image of Ronald Reagan like no one else. The man was amazing at making sure the camera angles, poses and settings were perfect to enhance the Presidents appearance with flair. If we could sum up in a paragraph what were Michael Deaver’s best professional qualities it would be best said by Nancy Reagan. In her memoir she said Mr. Deaver’s greatest skill “was in arranging what were known as good visuals — televised events or scenes that would leave a powerful symbolic image in people’s minds” May he rest in peace. President Ronald Reagan The Moscow Summit 05/29/88
On January 15, 1988, President Ronald Reagan directed the Secretary of Defense to establish the On-Site Inspection Agency (OSIA). Its mission was to carry out the on-site inspection and escort responsibilities of the United States under the provisions of the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty.Signed on December 8, 1987, by President Reagan and Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, the INF Treaty enjoined the two countries to eliminate all ground-launched missiles (approximately 2,700 missiles) with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers.National teams of inspectors would monitor and report on the elimination of these missile systems and other significant provisions of the treaty. The INF Treaty was ratified by the U.S. Senate and the USSR's Supreme Soviet in the spring of 1988, and the instruments of ratification were exchanged at the Reagan-Gorbachev Moscow Summit of June 1, 1988.Exactly 30 days later the first phase of the treaty began. On-site inspections were a

      It all began with Reagan
Watching the Republican candidates "debate" (an old white guy chorus line), it struck me how they all strained not to utter the "B" word (BUSH), but invoked the ghost of Ronald Reagan at every turn. Ah, Reagan. Was it with this president that the American predilection for delusion kicked into full gear? I mean, how did this B movie actor of limited intellect and a surfeit of polyester charm ever get turned into a statesman, much yet a hero? It was Thom Hartmann the other day who really nailed it on the head: it all started with Reagan. The casting of government as the world's greatest evil by its chief executive officer. And Americans, so simple-minded as to not see the awful irony in that syllogism, fell for it hook, line and sinker."The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'" - Ronald ReaganIt was during those eight years of the great communicator that the apparatus that held some sort of line to keep the exc

      The Reagan Wannabes
At one time he carried 49 of the 50 states, including Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island and California, states Republicans only fantasize about carrying these days. He won nearly 60% of the popular vote and helped create a coalition of the opposition party who voted for him. He's Ronald Reagan and to prove their desperation, the Republicans went to debate near his final resting place; in hopes to relive a time when the Republican Party was widely respected by the entire nation. The key words in last night's Republican debate were "Ronald Reagan" and "9/11"19 times the name of Ronald Reagan was uttered by the candidates.Sadly, none of them are anything like Ronald Reagan. The spirit of the kindhearted, sensible, tough, sly, friendly, conservative President who won the hearts of Americans for most of his term wasn't in any of these men.The Republican image Reagan worked so hard to create and successfully sold to Americans has been dismantled.

      Reagan Attacks Hagel's Anti-War Stance
Tonight on FOX News Channel’s Hannity & Colmes, radio talk show host Michael Reagan, the adopted son of former President Ronald Reagan, insinuated that Nebraska GOP Senator Chuck Hagel is vehemently opposed to the war in Iraq because “he is running for re-election in 2008″ and “saw this last election” as a referendum on Iraq, ergo, his Iraq position is just “playing politics.” However, Senator Hagel, a Vietnam combat veteran earning two Purple Hearts, voted for the AUMF in October 2002, but has long criticized the Bush administration. The notion that Hagel made a significant shift on Iraq since November 7, 2006 is a complete farce. The statue sits in the center of the city's Freedom Square. It would be renamed "Ronald reagan Freedom Square. The letter desrcibed the late President as a "symbol of liberty".
