Sharpe RatioSharpe Ratio DefinitionThe Sharpe Ratio was created to measure performance after being adjusted for risk. The Sharpe Ratio allows investors to determine how returns were obtained whether it’s due to excess risk assumed on the asset or hedge fund portfolio or if returns were obtained through intelligent planned investment selections. If a portfolio or asset has a high Sharpe ratio then that portfolio or asset has returns that were very successfully risk-adjusted.Sharpe ratio measures risk to reward ratio and whether the returns of a specific asset or portfolio have properly compensated for the amount of risk undertaken. The higher the Sharpe Ratio = returns are more and more risk adjusted = desirableWant something more meaty? Here is a whitepaper on the Sharpe Ratio by William

Suppose that you thought by July, (AAPL) would be trading at a maximum of 195 but didn't want to take on any downside risk in case Armageddon is just around the corner. An alternative to buying calls, for example, would be a ratio spread. This is a strategy where you think the stock (in this case AAPL) will go up x% but not y%, where x is maybe 30% and y is 50%. Click on the graph to the right. I have identified a possible price target for AAPL by July. In this example, I think AAPL has the potential to go to the 180-200 range but not above the 210 range. Some advantages include no outlay of capital and the potential to profit from a move up, sideways or down.Disadvantages include sacrificing some potential upside, having to tie up a chunk of capital, and getting burned if the stock were to

The mathematicians at a prestigious University have determined that a 0.7 waist to hip ratio is scientifically attractive. Many women have a problem with excess fat around the hips. This gives the body more of a straight appearance rather than the much better cosmetically pleasing hourglass figure. In order to accentuate their figure, many women are turning to hip liposuction.Hip Liposuction is a fairly simple plastic surgery procedure. The hip liposuction procedure can be carried out using either of the two methods: tumescent liposuction and ultrasound liposuction .The tumescent liposuction procedure is carried out under a local anesthetic. The plastic surgeon injects a fluid into the fatty deposits around the hips. The fluid enlarges the fatty deposits and numbs that area of the body makin

The PEG (Price/Earnings to Growth) ratio is a tool that can help investors find undervalued stocks. It's not as well known as its "cousins," the P/E and P/B ratios, but is just as valuable. When used in conjunction with other ratios, it provides investors a perspective of what the market thinks of a stock's growth potential relative to Earnings per Share (EPS) growth. The PEG ratio compares a stock's Price/Earnings (P/E) ratio and its expected Earnings per Share (EPS) growth rate. If the PEG ratio is equal to 1, it means that the market is pricing the stock to fully reflect the stock's EPS growth. Which is "normal," in theory, because the P/E is supposed to reflect a stock's future earnings growth in a rational and efficient market. If the PEG ratio is great than 1 it could i

As I promised back in January I'm going to revisit my Shrinking P/E Ratio Screen at the beginning of each month in 2008. That being the case, the purpose of this post is to share the results of the screen as of the beginning of February. For more information on this screen, you can check out my previous posts on the subject here. In short, this screen pulls companies with nicely growing earnings and revenues but with steadily declining P/E ratios over the previous year. My theory which I've yet to prove is that the stocks that are spit out of this screen may be attractive on average as "value plays". By running this screen each month of 2008 I'm hoping to amass some anecdotal evidence of whether my theory is correct or not. My ultimate goal with this study and with any screening or technica
I've written several times now about an interesting stock screen I like to run which looks for stocks that have shown a steadily declining P/E ratio over the past year despite rapidly growing revenues and earnings. (For my past posts on the subject click on this link.) I have some ideas about what a steadily declining P/E ratio might be telling us in general but I've lacked sufficient data up until now to scientifically test my theories. In the interest of starting to compile the necessary data to backtest this filter, I intend to run the screen at the beginning of every month during 2008 and to track each stock generated by the filter from that point on.To that end, the purpose of this post is to share the results of the Shrinking P/E Ratio screen as of now. Please note that I have modifi
If you caught our last article about Mortgage Documentation Types, you know a bit more about the more common mortgage doc types and their requirements. Although most homeowners will refinance many times throughout their lives, they may never hear about the other, less common doc types. In this article we’re going to dive into NINA, No Doc, and No Ratio doc types and explore their roles in the mortgage industry. So let’s get to it.
No Income, No Asset (NINA)
This is just like it sounds…no income or asset documentation required. Sounds great, right? Well, these type of loans aren’t very common, especially in today’s market.
I didn’t state it explicitly in the last doc type article, but the different doc types represent different levels of risk for the lender, and, as a result, the more relaxed the documentation requirement for a given loan, the higher the interest rate will be. The NINA doc type, all things being equal, represents a significant risk
Twice in the past (Feb 2007 and May 2007) I have written about a fundamental screen which identifies stocks that have experienced a constant decrease in P/E ratio over the previous year. Being a bargain hunting bottom feeder at heart, I originally created this screen in an attempt to identify high quality, yet beaten up stocks. The more I think about it, however, the less confident I am that "high quality" has anything to do with it.Given that I have limited data at this point I can't really draw any conclusions about the effectiveness of the screen. That said I intend to revisit the previous results of this screen in an attempt to learn a thing or two. To that end the purpose of this post is to check in on the stocks that were identified by the screen in February. At some point I hope to add a little science and track every stock that is spit out of this filter for a substantial period of time. This particular screen places a big premium on growth and steadily falling P/E ratios. In t
It is always interesting that there are so many different types of investments around us, ranging from regulated investments such as bonds and stocks, all the way to unregulated investment vehicles such as collectibles, antiques and many others. Building on Monday and Tuesday’s posts, let’s take a look at some data that might provide a basis for drawing a conclusion to the second question posed, namely:2.) What might be the extent of job losses related to corporate restructuring in preparation for and as a result of a prolonged recession?Initially, I had anticipated plotting some of the payroll data for sectors directly and indirectly related to the housing-lending boom-bust and making some guesstimates as to how many jobs might be trimmed as the economy slows down. But, after plotting the ratio of overall and private non-farm payroll as well as the payroll of various business sectors to overall non-institutional population (above 16 years old and not in jail or “juvee”), the last eight years seem to pose more questions than answers. The payroll-population ratio concept simply provides a mechanism for better isolating the changes to payroll rosters by calculating the percentage of population that is employed in a give
Buyers are in the driver’s seat in a buyers market and sellers are up against low ball offers in a buyer’s market.
The buyer wants the house because it’s a perfect fit and the seller is anxious to sell in a slow market!
The list-to-sale ratio is calculated by taking the sales price and dividing by the list price then multiplying by 100.
For example if a Port Orange home is listed for $250,000 and the house sold for $200,000 then:
200000/250000 x 100 = 80%
In this case we see that the home sold for 80% of the list price.
If you calculate the average list to sale ratio for a neighborhood it will give you the average for the comparable sales price of neighboring properties.
So, with this in mind when you have a low ball offer of $175,000 on a $250,000 home, your buyer’s offer is 30% below the list price. You can show your buyer that this offer is 10% below the average price that sellers are accepting in that neig
