Random thoughts about life on a very hot sunny day
Boy it's been awhile. Let's see if I still remember how to do this. I spend most of June catching up on things that didn't get done in April or May. I had the chicken pox and pneumonia. However, life didn't stop moving by quickly. I have finished one more course towards my degree, leaving me on my last one. Eight years to do, yet through it all I kept going. It might not sound like much, but

Random Thoughts On The Republican Party Of Texas Convention
No, Capitol Annex did not get credentials to blog the Republican Party of Texas 2008 Convention. In fact, we didn’t bother to apply. Even if we got them (perhaps in return for a right-leaning site getting credentialed at the TDP Convention?), there isn’t enough anti-nausea medication in the would that would have kept us from repeatedly vomiting all over the convention floor. Sadly, I wasn’t able to blog much of the TDP convention on Saturday. Unlike last year when I blogged non-stop, pressing business as one of the seemingly 9.5 million delegates roaming around the Austin Convention Center (motto: “Function in no way inhibits form!”) kept me from the laptop on Saturday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. when I was serving as one of the convention chair’s

Fan Support: Red Sox vs. Orioles & Random Thoughts
In yet another sad loss, the Orioles were bested by the Evil Empire 1A, the Boston Red Sox, 9-4. Simply put, Brian Burres got shelled as he was attacked by the Red Sox offense early and often on Sunday. Although Luke Scott homered, Baltimore was undone by J.D. Drew, Manny Ramirez's 501st homer, and the return of rotund Bartolo Colon -- who seemingly was left for dead -- until the Red Sox picked hi

I had it pictured in my mind...I looked in my crystal ball last week and just knew UNC would face UCLA in NCAA Championship. Instead, we have Kansas and Memphis squaring off. I'm gonna be bold and make ANOTHER prediction and say that Memphis will take this one. I just hope that it doesn't come down to the last seconds and they need free throws to win it. We looked at old pictures of my Grandmother that are going to be used at the service this week, and just talked. The viewing is Wednesday evening, and the funeral on Thursday. This show is great! I can't even bring myself to watch Lipstick Jungle, which is the same basic show premise. CM is so good that there's no need.* Why do a lot of people (yours truly, included) start off a moderate-to-long story with "So," (So, I was sitting... -- So, I went to...) I catch myself all the time.* A lot of people are what I call "lazy readers." They read the beginning, a bit of the center, and some of the end. This, sometimes, causes problems because you can miss an important and message-changing detail.

      Dougherty's random Thoughts 12/19
The winds of change, they are a blowin’ at Tennessee. And, it’s not the change that many fans were hoping for following a blowout loss at Alabama that left Tennessee with four wins in seven games and in a player’s only meeting. No matter where you come down on the future direction of the program, these coaches and players deserve respect for coming together and finishing the season strong and for ending up in Atlanta. Granted, this team saw three make-able field goals from opposing kicker’s fail to pass through the uprights giving them the opportunity to play for an SEC Title. If South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Kentucky all hit game winning field goals Tennessee finishes 6-6. It's a fine line. But, it's a fine line the head coach walked along confidently. So now Phillip Fulmer will be in a position to drastically change his program and has a chance to be there to see it through. This is a great opportunity for CPF to reinvigorate his program while

      Random Thoughts on Hong Kong
A canopy of street signs Here are various observations on Hong Kong that are probably too short to justify their own posts: Street signage in Hong Kong for stores are unlike anything I’ve ever seen. They not only extend into the road, but often will cross the meridian and overlap signs from the other side of the street. The effect it to almost cover some streets. At night almost makes Nathan Street (the main shopping street in Kowloon) look like downtown Las Vegas. There was a great deal of concern over what would happen to Hong Kong after the hand over from the British to China back in 1997. With the exception of a PRC flag flying over a few governmental buildings, I can see nothing that would indicate that this is part of the PRC. In fact, I was very surprised yesterday to see an informational table set up by members of Falun Gong. I saw a similar table in Taiwan, but that’s Taiwan. Hong Kong has a separate currency from China and Macau. The Hong Kong dollar is pegged

If you're reading this column you probably agree with me and most educated college football fans that the S.E.C. is the best conference in college football. With four coaches who have National Championships and one who shamefully did not get a shot though his 2004 Auburn team was unbeaten, this league is turning into a dog eat dog atmosphere. And no, there is no Mike Vick joke coming. Although, Mike Vick's absurd behavior and the consequences brought forth from those wicked decisions have helped change the conference landscape for the better yet again. The S.E.C. has traded Ed Orgeron for Bobby Petrino. I think Coach O would agree that the conference has improved with that swap. Bobby Petrino jumps ship again and makes more promises: (more…)

Heisman Decision 2007: The 2007 Heisman Trophy will be awarded to an SEC superstar Saturday at the Downtown Athletic Club in New York. Will it be Arkansas running back Darren McFadden or Florida superman quarterback and cult hero Tim Tebow? Do you go with the best pro prospect or the player with the most productive season in SEC history? The Heisman Trophy is famous for being awarded to football players who are not the best pro prospect. I’d be willing to wager that as you read that sentence many names popped through your head. Names such as: Jason White, Eric Crouch, Gino Toretta and Andre Ware just to name a few perhaps. There are many more. Darren McFadden is the most explosive player in the country and could be the number one pick in the 2008 NFL Draft depending on the needs of the team picking first. The 11 worst films on the IMDb Top 250 (and other random thoughts)
As far as the internets go, the Internet Movie Database is one of the most credible non-news sites (not that those sites are credible - heyo!). However, aside from housing a mini-encyclopedia of every film you never wanted to know that much about, it's also home to probably the most comprehensive ranking system for films.I like their Top 250 (and it's sub-lists) for a number of reasons, chief of which is probably related to my age (31) and the average age of internet denizens (and therefore voters on IMDb). I'm not sure what that average age is, but I'm fairly certain it's significantly less than the average age of an American Film Institute member. The IMDb list, taken as a whole, is both critically and commercially minded, with all of the standards that you might expect to see on a typical critics' Top 10 Best Ever list, but it also includes films that go beyond mere critical success, ones that have had a cultural impact - in short, ones that are loved. Here's their Top 10:1. I was just thinking about our family trip to Germany and went back to look at some of the photos we took. When I say we, I mean my wife. I realize, upon reflection, that she is the one always taking the pictures. She is only in about 1 in 50 pictures. Most of the pictures are, understandably, of the farty pants twins. When I discussed this fact with my wife she said it’s fine. I know it’s not fine. She needs to be documented as much as the rest of us. She is a part of our lives. When I told her this, she specifically told me not to publish ANY pictures of her on “That blog of yours”. My wife is not a reader of my blog. Does your spouse read your blog if you have one? While I am supported by my wife in my writing endeavors, she is not a follower. She tells me that she doesn’t need to read about what she lives day to day. I have to agree. But I remind her that my blog is just like pictures, only with words. A reminder of little moments in time. Snippets of

As the season has ended, and we are now into November, this portion of the year is when all the ‘hot stove” and free agent talk begins. Right now, from the looks of things, the Orioles are officially into the rebuilding phase. Over the past few weeks, the turnover has been absolutely amazing, and all the activity right now is pointing to not only rebuilding, but a complete makeover and culture change. There has already been sweeping change with the number of coaches and members of the front office staff have been let go or have decided to pursue opportunities with other organizations. This week, Sam Snider and Rudy Arias were let go, probably as further indication that Trembley is cleaning house as well as MacPhail. Listening to various talk shows and doing some light reading, the Orioles are expected to not delve into the free agent market, but rather improve the team by trades. Thus, the next week will be very important as the Orioles head to sunny Orlando, Florida fo

Random Thoughts and Quick Hits: The Orioles...
Well, good afternoon everyone! It’s unseasonably warm out and baseball is still in the air in light of the Orioles being out of the hunt. As this week is near a conclusion, it is no surprise to anyone that the team is heading into a new day with the departures of Tom Treblehorn and Jim Duquette. A lot should happen in the next few months, and the course of the team’s future depends on the moves of Andy MacPhail, and if Peter Angelos can somehow change his legacy of a meddling owner to a winning one. In an article on Press Box Online, Craig Heist states the obvious – the Orioles need a new direction. Random Thoughts and Reading the Bible
3:33 - that's the time I woke up this morning4:15 - that's the time I got out of bed9:30 - that's the time I went to bed last night6 hours of sleep. I don't think this is enough but my eyes just blinks open and my mind won't go back to sleep. I tried - see, I stayed in bed til 4:15 hoping I'd doze back to sleep, but I couldn't. Oh well, I heard Einstein (or Edison) only sleeps for 4 hours. I don't remember where I read that, but maybe some people just don't need much sleep. But then again, I know I am not one of "those" people because I used to have an 8 hour sleep at night and I know that's how much hours of sleep I need. Well, since I am awake, might as well stop talking about sleep and move on...Reading the Bible. I have decided to stop reading some of the books that I am randomly reading and focus on reading the Bible. I have not read the Bible like I used to and I know that's not good. Last night I read through I and II Timothy and thought - wow, it's been ages

Last night we attended a wedding reception. It's a Maui reception of a our dear friend Mikey and her lovely wife Shae. They got married in Oregon, and here on Maui for their honeymoon. Since they have tons of friends here, we had a Maui wedding reception. We've known Mikey since he was a tiny little kid we've seen him grown into a wonderful man of God. I was a bit teary eyed watching their slide show. It's amazing how time flies fast. There was an open "mic" during the reception, open for greeting, encouragement and advice to the couple. I love giving advice and encouragement to young couples. And speaking in front of a large crowd does not intimidate me. But last night, I held back. Maybe it's because I was trying to be considerate and let others do the "talking", others who are closer to the couple than I am.And so I was thinking, what would have I said had I stood out there and grab the microphone to speak to the new and young couple? Last night, my thoughts were these:

I have a meme about using US$1 million and sexy tutor, Miss Loi has done it. I’m still waiting for the rest. So, I should go and place a comment then. I’m so lazy, huh? Jian, you promised to do after you get well. Understandably, this is a new blog site and .info sites have been used for splogs which means trouble for myself. There are some sites where my comments go through, some just got caught in spam. While I very much wished to link to Wikipedia, with the latest notice about this guy going around editing the information about Mr Lee Hsien Loong, Singapore dollar, and other sites due to the rising fares, perhaps (?) to vent his frustrations, I link to other sites that are less prone to being defaced. While it’s unfortunate that my site seems to be identified as a spam, I did try to get another domain but it’s been in use for quite some time, I can’t just point a gun at the owner to demand that it be sold to me. At Rosh Hashanah services this evening, something -- I'm not sure what -- caused me to think about whether a native Hebrew speaker reads the prayers in Hebrew or English. Lucky for me, I was sitting next to such a person, and I got to ask. This progressed to me asking whether she translated from one to the other in her head, which language she thinks in, which language she dreams in, and whether she feels herself shifting between languages. It was an interesting conversation, although maybe we should have been concentrating on the praying, all things considered.

We still have Labor Day, Halloween and Thanksgiving to come ...2. Family Night. Why is it so hard to have a consistent "family night"? After the Tweens Camp several months ago, we started doing family nights on Mondays. It was fun - the kids look forward to it. We only lasted 3 weeks though. The busyness crept. Schedule got messed up. Oh, we really need to get this family time back.3. The H Word. You know how for a kid swear words are a no no, so they use the initial to refer to it when they need to use it in a sentence? Like "s" word for sh*t, and "f" word for "f*ck"? Well, my son just added to the taboo words and have elevated (actually degraded) "homework" into the "h" word. The H word is bad. It's evil. It's the enemy. He does not like the word homework. I modified in such a way that instead of having 20 thoughts or sentiments for 20 different people, I wrote 20 ‘anonymous’ thoughts that can be directed to less that 20 people. Two or three statements there can be directed to a single person, while some are sole statements for one person. It’s up to you guys if you think it’s for you or not. I miss our childhood days. I miss having our own worlds devoid of bitterness, heartbreak, and sadness. Let’s try to relive those someday. Random Thoughts on Foreign Policy
Ron Paul recently appeared on the Mike Gallagher radio show, during which Mr. Gallagher asked him whether he thought most of his support was coming from those who believe the assertion that 9/11 was a government conspiracy. It's an absurd claim that Paul has never come close to making, so the latent insinuation embedded in the question is very strange. Paul isn't accusing anyone of wanting attacks to happen or of actually "staging" them. What he has said in essence is that there is a propensity for politicians and military leaders to see what they want to see and to capitalize on incidents - real or perceived - after the fact to ratchet up to larger goals. Giuliani didn't stage 9-11 but "America's Mayor" has certainly taken advantage of it to the fullest extent.I was among those who, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, found some currency in the idea that we should go into Iraq if they had a bomb and could be dealing with al-Qaeda. Neither turned out to be true, and senior official

More on this later. Maybe. Yesterday, as I stood in the cheese section of the IGA discussing the advantages of the four cheese blend versus regular mozarella with myself, I was overcome by the song “I Know I’ll Never Love This Way Again” wafting gently from the loudspeaker. I declared, “Damn, that Dionne Warwick can sing,” and was just beginning to belt out the chorus with my psychic friend when I turned and made eye contact with a woman who appeared absolutely terrified. A few things worry me about the 2007 team.  First of all, i’m not sold (yet) on the starting pitching rotation.  It’s been well documented that we have the best pitcher in baseball on our staff (in fact MLB might do well to rename the Cy Young award to pay homage to Johan Santana).  I’m honestly worried about three starters on our team…..  I’m worried about Ponson, Boof and scared to death by Silva.  I’ll start with Boof.  He’s young and while he has some experience he certainly is not as dependable as I would like.  I like what he does on the mound but I fear t

A big Mahalo goes out to Mommy Needs a MaiTai, Almost Somewhat Positive, Debby’s Ramblings, Are We There Yet?, Queen of Cute Shoes, fefefomana, and The Dackle Princess. You guys are the best blogging friends a gal could ever have! Merry Christmas! A while back Sam sent me a copy of a book called Flirting with Forty by Jane Porter. Now that I’m done, I’d like to pass it along. If you’re interested in it, please leave a note in comments and I’ll randomly choose someone on Christmas Day. Here’s the review from Publisher’s Weekly: In Porter’s second dip into the chick lit pool (after The Frog Prince), Seattle single mom Jackie Laurens begins wondering how important happiness is: divorced with two kids and a thriving decorating business, she assumes she’s happy, but can’t help feeling like somethin

      Random Thoughts
It is Monday and I finally have time to sit down and Blog again. I can't believe how crazy things seem to have been. Yesterday I decided not to even turn on the computer. I think it's important to take those breaks every once in awhile. Although today I had so many emails to answer. It amazes me how much we rely on email. I mean what happened to phone calls? Weird? No

My Random Thoughts: Paypal Now In The Philippines
Yesterday I signed up for my very first Paypal account after I saw an announcement in one of the forum I frequently visit that it was already available here in the Philippines. I've been wanting to have Paypal ever since I became an eBay member for several years now. In fact I wrote Paypal a couple of times to request that my country be included in their list. It is difficult to transact at eBay

My Random Thoughts: A Blind Man Wins Big
Today a blind man won more than four hundred thousand pesos (P400,000.00) in "Kapamilya Deal or No Deal?" This is the adaptation of the famous NBC game show in the US which is hosted by Ms. Kris Aquino here in the Philippines. What is so admirable about the guy, Crisanto, is that although he is blind he was able to find a real life partner who was a polio victim. They both met at a reflexology
