If you are looking for a healthy scone, it doesn't get much healthier than this. It isn't fancy, and if you are accustomed to those big butter, big calorie scones sold at American cafes, you may find this old fashioned scone a bit humble. This is the brawny, salt-of-the-earth peasant scone to Starbuck's high maintenance cosmopolitan diva. It is a dense scone when compared to its butter-rich

Welcome to another exciting entry in Steve Cooks, where I work on recipes related to general health and fitness. Yesterday, I went back into the lab... err... kitchen for yet another attempt at a high energy, protein bar. To recap, I'm trying to make a bar that is relatively low on carbs, very low in fat and high in protein. I am not in any way advocating a low carb diet. This is less like the South Beach and more of... let's call it the South King County Diet. Down here in South King County, we like carbs. Of course, most of those carbs are from onion rings, steak fries and beer, but what are you gonna do?I am trying to create something that is relatively cheap to make, holds well in the fridge (at least 2 weeks), tastes pretty good and has a decent, palatable texture. So, I'm avoiding in
We picked up a 375ml bottle of Miranda “The Pioneers” Raisin Muscat 2004 for only $7 in a bargain bin at Dan Murphy’s. The grapes used in production are left to dry somewhat on the vine before harvesting and are sourced from vineyards in the Riverina, SA and VIC.

About a year ago, I was complaining about how the Fresh Direct Ciabatta Rolls had gotten smaller and more expensive. I have to admit, I still buy them, because I don't know of anywhere else to get parbaked breads and I just love the concept. You pop a parbaked bread in your oven for 15-20 minutes, and you've got warm bread that tastes freshly baked. This time, we tried a Raisin Pecan Loaf, and it was great, crusty outside, soft, chewy, and dense, inside, packed with raisins and just the right amount of pecans.Be aware that this Raisin Pecan Loaf is very addictive. It ruined a perfectly healthy meal by adding nearly half a loaf of bread to it. I just couldn't stop eating it...and with some sweet cream butter...you're ready for couch potato heaven.
Have you ever wanted to bake something and didn’t have all the ingredients? Did you go ahead with substitutions and hoped it would come out? That’s where I found myself last night.I wanted to have a muffin for breakfast, a raisin muffin, to be exact. I searched through all my cookbooks and I did find recipes. But the ingredients were another story. My next step was the internet, where I found a recipe that was simple, yet I was still missing some the ingredients. I crossed my fingers and hoped that all the substitutions would yield me an edible muffin. What I got was a large humble muffin, whose taste surpasses any of those overpriced dry muffins available at coffee houses. Oh, is this muffin soft and so good. The recipe originally called for 12 muffins, but I wanted big breakfas
Many people suffer from dehydration without realising it. They continuously get headaches, have dry itchy skin and may find it difficult to concentrate. The average person needs to be drinking approximately 1 litre for 25kg’s of body weight to stay well hydrated.

I'm going to 'talk' less and post more. I'm going to try to get more recipes out. My list of upcoming recipes are getting too long and I'm losing my notes (just realised the kids are colouring my food pictures on my notes :P) So, sorry if I seem less 'chatty' or perhaps you are glad I am. *laughs*Anyway, this is one of the kid's favourites and mine too. I have over baked this but luckily it's only the outer layer that's a bit dry and crumbly. The rest was still nice.Ingredients: 5 Eggs 180 Sugar 200g Self Raising Flour, sifted 250g Butter, soften 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Essence 80g Raisin, soaked to soften and dried (omit to make butter cake) How to do it: Grease baking tin. Reheat oven at 170C Beat butter and sugar till creamy and light. Add egg one at a time and mix until well combined. Add
“A Raisin In The Sun”I watched Puff Daddy’s version of “A Raisin In The Sun”, a film first made in 1961 starring Sidney Poitier, Claudia McNeil, Diana Sands, Ruby Dee and Louis Gossett Jr. on ABC the other night. Puff Daddy’s version was quite interesting, P. Diddy himself had a leading role, playing the troubled young man - who so badly wanted to be a success. I’d never seen Sean Combs act, so I was rather surprised to see him give such an inspired performance. Does his performance deserve an Oscar? This was one good film, I really enjoyed this movie. Now the movie itself was in the line of the “old negro spirituals”, no hope anywhere. But it ended like “Cinderella”. This new “A Raisin In The Sun” was a good movie, no doubt. ABC took a chance and from the news sou
Ok, I admit I tuned in to see what in the heck Puff Daddy was doing playing a serious role in the ABC production of A Raisin in the Sun. But my gosh, it was Diddy in the City-- Sean Coombs was brilliant, as was the rest of the cast. Although it is terrific that ABC was able to fulfill its quota for Black History Month, I hope the fact P Diddy was there made the message contemporary to viewers. For the story of the proud African-American family, in South Chicago, which continually had to defer their dreams, needs to be heard in a culture, where hope is trivialized by reality shows, as well as political campaigns—and we pretend that racism has been extinguished. A Raisin in the Sun opened on Broadway in 1959. It was the first Broadway play written by a black woman, and the first Broadway
I know it's Sunday. I just ran out of time on Friday to post it, but it's by no means late. Zorra of 1x umrühren bitte is hosting this months Sugar High Friday and she has declared it "pudding Friday". That's right, pudding, in any form.At first, I thought …great! Then reality set in. There are sooo many variations of pudding. I just couldn't decide. Did I want something chocolate-y? Mousse? Steamed? Decisions, decisions. I procrastinated so long that the choice was made for me. Earlier in the week, I had made "raisin bread" and it had gotten stale. Instead of throwing it out, I rejuvenated it by turning it into delicious raisin bread pudding. I really didn't have to add too much to the custard since the bread had a lot of flavor on its own. I did add a handful of raisins just because I really like raisins. I ate a slice for breakfast with coffee and it was fab.So grab your stale bread and join in the fabulousness of Sugar High Friday~ Pudding. You have until Dec
This week has been all about food, baking and making no apologies for indulging. At any given minute during the last two days, you could have caught me with either a spatula or a cookie sheet in hand. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, no surprise since it is almost synonymous with food. I have no shortage of blessings and since I make a huge effort to be grateful on a daily basis, I don't get too into going around the table announcing my most cherished feelings of gratitude. Most of the time, that which I am truly grateful is extremely personal and I would rather share it with a very close friend or family member on a random day over a cup of tea and french Madeline's. But generally speaking, I'm with many others in celebrating this day and being grateful for family, friends and health. In case I don't get to post again until after Thursday, I hope that those of you who celebrate Thanksgiving have a happy and safe one. Since I don't have a picture to go with this post, let me s
When family and friends hear you're on your way to Baguio Country Club, one pasalubong request stands out: raisin bread! The next day, we had breakfast in the Raisin Bread Shop of the BCC. And of course, I bought their signature raisin bread and banana bread to take home.Don't miss out on their equally famous blueberry muffins among many other muffins. I'm sure their cakes are equally mouth-watering. In fact, the cake display case beckons to every customer who enters. But I had enough sugar for the morning. Also available in the bread shop are deli sausages and cheeses among many other products.I had wanted to stay an extra night but I had to rush to an evening meeting in Makati. So that ends my 3 weeks of non-stop travel. It's back to school. In a way, it's time for a vacation from my vacation. Hahaha!
I just tried this super easy recipe for Biscotti. It's not my favorite but it's good and a nice variation instead of constantly having the standard almond or anise flavored Biscotti. This is definitely a good recipe for a beginner.

Dates and tamarinds have long been favourites for a chutney; Yet recently I discovered this amazing variation which adds raisins and fennel seeds to these to make a wonderful sweet and sour sauce that has a unique flavour and aroma. This Date and Raisin Chutney can also be preserved for sometime. It looks as appetizing as it tastes, and even if the ingredients make you skeptical, I would urge all of you to definitely give it a try. It tastes great with parathas, snacks or as a spread!Ingredients1 cup pitted dates - chopped1 cup raisins (dried grapes)1/2 cup tamarind paste2 tsp fennel seeds1 tsp chilli powder1/2 cup jaggery (or to taste)1 tbsp oil1/2 tsp mustard seeds2-3 slit green chillies - slit and cut into 2-3 piecesMethodTake a pan and dry roast the fennel seeds and mustard seeds over low flame until you can smell the aroma. Grind it to a fine powder using a spice grinder or stone and mortar. Now add this to tamarind, dates, raisins, chilly powder and jaggery and green chillies. No
Uh-huh. Yeah. I called her. Shelley. The 'hot' manager of the tanning salon. We arranged to meet last night in front of BJ's. She said I wouldn't miss her because she'd have on a bright orange dress. I didn't miss her. OMG. She is a 22 year old with the skin of leather. She already has wrinkles starting around her eyes, lips and neck. The closer I got, the scarier she looked. She was standing there seemingly annoyed when I walked up to introduce myself. She said "I've been standing here for 5 minutes" (and I was 10 minutes early for our date). The rest of the date went quickly down hill from there. She had no sense of humor AT ALL. Every joke I 'tried' to make she would respond with "what do you mean by that?" Sigh. Between my attempts at humor, she talked about herself. What she wanted in life. Nice house. Tennis coach. BMW. Pool. Diamonds. And how she wasn't self-absorbed but 'self aware' and knew she deserved these things. Uh-huh. When it wa

Here were our contenders for the Kashi vs. Fiber One smackdown (from top left, going clockwise):
Kashi Go Lean Crunch
Fiber One Raisin Bran Clusters
Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs
Kashi Go Lean
TasteMy four-year-daughter Lucie (aka "Boo Girl") and I sat down and sampled three Kashi cereals and General Mills' new Fiber One Raisin Bran Clusters. We did not try the cereals with milk - Lucie likes her cereal dry and crunchy. Fine with me.
Based on taste alone, Lucie liked the Kashi Go Lean Crunch. I preferred the Fiber One Raisin Bran Clusters. Both were yummy, but Fiber One has a maple syrup flavor that won me over. I liked the added raisins, too. Kashi Go Lean was pretty good, but Kashi Puffs are pretty boring. You'll need honey, milk, yogurt and/or fruit to dress it up.

This French toast really kicks! The addition of Irish cream liqueur sets it apart from the more blase' breakfast fare. I think you'll like this Greg. I remember the tales of five alarm kitchen fires you used to regale us with. Maybe the division of labor at your B&B should be such that your sister does the cooking! One day, a young man entered the store, glanced at the clerk, and glanced at the loaves of bread behind the counter. Noticing the length of her skirt (or general lack thereof) and the location of the raisin bread, he had a brilliant idea. "I'd like some raisin bread, please," the man said politely. The female clerk nodded and climbed up a ladder to reach the raisin bread, which was located on the very top shelf. The young man, standing almost directly beneath her, was provided with an excellent view, just as he surmised he would be. Once she descended the ladder, he mused that he really should get two loaves, as he was having company for dinner. As the clerk retrieved the second loaf of bread, one of the other male customers noticed what was going on. Thinking quickly, he requested his own loaf of raisin bread, so he could continue to enjoy the view. With each trip up the ladder, th
(Fresno, CA) NO ONE OUT DARES HANK McAFEE, NO ONE! That’s how the business card for the world class daredevil reads. And his resume, including such stunts as jumping a motorcycle over the Grand Canyon with one hand tied behind his back, wrestling a Great White shark while blindfolded and banging Paris Hilton without a condom, speaks to that. But what the business card and resume don’t speak to, is that despite all the myths and conventional wisdom attributed to a daredevil, Hank McAfee has little itty bitty raisin balls.
I don't bake because I don't have an oven. I doubt my hubby is planning to get me one too. I have not been successful asking for a sewing machine for years. Asking for an Oven will be more difficult. He find it an eyesore for the oven to sit on the kitchen top. But he did bought me a Muffin Maker.Anyway, to bake, I have to find other ways and using a non-stick flat pan is a way. Relieved myself off the extra energy by making some crepes. The other day, during my afternoon trip to Petaling Street, I managed to grab a packet of all-purpose flour and a 500g pack of granulated sugar. From 7Eleven. Ok, laugh la. But really, I wanted to stock up on raw supplies so that I can cook some stuff, and at that moment, 7Eleven was the only store in sight that sells groceries. But I warn you - never go there purposefully to buy groceries. It'll kill you and your money. You'll end up beating yourself after you see the very same item with only half the price on Carrefour's shelf. :POk then, my self-invented Crepe recipe :5 mounted tablespoonfuls of all-purpose flour (plain flour la)1 tablespoon of butter at room temperature (don't put too much, just about 1 tbspn is enough)1 egg1 cup of milkEnough for roughly 4 pieces of fairly large crepe.Dump everything into a mixing bowl and whisk with all your might.
