Since its outbreak, every poultry owner had become aware of the consequences that can happen if this deadly disease is not prevented. This past weekend in Atlanta, Georgia they held a fund-raiser in the memory of Left-eye. The benefit helps kids in Georgia and Honduras; the country where she died. Her brother was hoping that the event raised between $3,000 - $5,000 dollars. She i

I'm heading to upstate New York to visit my friend Youngmee for a few days, so I won't be blogging again until Saturday at the earliest. In the interim, I'd like to ask that if you enjoy the content of this blog, please consider donating to help support my journeys and daily blahgging. (My soon-to-be job in Kyrgyzstan only pays $500/mo plus accomodation, so any little bit helps!) Thanks in advance; I'll see you on Saturday!
"Dubai Cares", a public fund raising rally collected close to $500 million USD from the public in just eight weeks. Dubai's ruler, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum matched that an equal donation. That makes close to $1 billion USD.Based on a long-term strategy of investing in community-based, education programmes, "Dubai Cares" will use the donations to build and renovate schools, train teachers, promote gender equality in education, provide teaching materials, offer scholarships, organize school feeding programmes and establish annual medical check- ups for students in some of the poorest countries in the world.“I now ask the United Nations to follow Dubai's model of charity work. We are leading the march for human welfare,” said Sheikh Mohammed, who had launched the fundraising drive on September 19 with the aim of helping the United Nations reach its goal of providing primary education to every child by 2015. Human Events article link Fred Thompson's Progressby Robert NovakPosted: 07/21/2007In advance of a formal solicitation for funds or an announcement of his candidacy, Fred Thompson's presidential campaign is quietly organizing its first Washington fund-raiser at the downtown J.W. Marriott hotel the last week in July. This event will give the clearest signal so far of how successful the actor-politician will be in his late-starting drive to finance his run for president. It will be watched carefully to see whether Thompson picks up important lobbyists and other Washingtonians who earlier had lined up for Sen. John McCain's fading campaign for the presidential nomination.A footnote: Thompson may not announce officially as a candidate until September, although an "exploratory" committee may soon be unveiled.
If you're looking for some church fundraiser ideas, here are a dozen or so that are fairly easy to put together. These church fund raisers are low cost and take some effort, but they do a great job of raising much needed funds.Bake Sale Bake sales are a great way to get everyone together and strengthen the bond with your church. You can do a typical bake sale fundraiser or a Christmas Cookie box sale where you sell tickets and everyone gets to fill up a box with their choice of cookies.Yard Sale Doing a big rummage sale or yard sale in the church parking lot on Saturday morning is a fun way to raise funds. You can get people to donate their items for a general sale, sell tables like a flea market does, or even let people sell things from their trunks for a small fee. Put out a general call for items and let parishioners know that you can send a crew around with a truck for big items from the attic or garage.Community Cleanup A great project for a youth group is to do a community clean
With the 10 year treasury yield at 4.99% and likely to cross up into 5% territory, the mettle of the Wall Street's bulls' willingness to buy stocks 'til the cows come home will likely be tested in the days ahead. I'm not ready to say the bull market is imminent peril, but I am a bit uncomfortable with the converging worlds of higher bond yields here in the U.S. and an outside negative like a
A small scale merger Monday is already in the making and as usual it features companies that were not part of the Friday rumor mill:
Netherlands' Qiagen buying Digene for $1.6 billion. Digene (DIGE) closed Friday at $44.77 with just a smattering of options trading. The takeover price is $61.25. Hot diggity!
Blackstone, purported in the rumor mill to be after Micron (MU) is making a buy. But
My apologies, folks, for my limited posting of late as I've been busy attending to other business matters in recent days. I've also been walloped with a pretty severe case of sinusitis which has kept me down for the count (yes, the left side of my face is killing me). Another thing I've been busy doing is managing a small options account of a friend who put me to a friendly test of doubling it

While in the Lancaster area of Pennsylvania over the weekend, I discovered how to get to Paradise! How? Through Intercourse! It was an eye opening experience. Yes, in order to get to Paradise, PA, you first have to drive through a town called Intercourse, PA. Astounding, eh?
In the ongoing intercourse of business on Wall Street volume was lighter than usual and the range was fairly tight, but
I've been out all day attending to various matters related to my children's education. It's amazing how time flies, with only about 5 weeks to go before the school year is over.
5 weeks has been about the winning streak for Wall Street and eventually all good things must come to an end. Just by simple chart recognition, let alone looking at something like Bollinger Bands, it wasn't rocket
Earnings season pretty much came to a close in tech world last night with Cisco's thud of weaker than anticipated guidance and earnings season for the overall S&P 500 universe will effectively draw to a close on 5/15 when Wal Mart posts its Q1 numbers. Until then its mop up time with a smattering of smaller S&P 500 and 600 companies posting over the next several days. As the chart below shows,
As I suspected, too much options mania and Cisco (CSCO) could not meet the hopes and dreams of not only the wild eyed options speculators but the market in general . CEO John Chambers pegged the revenue outlook to 15% to 16% Q4 growth from the 20% rise seen in the April, or fiscal third quarter. Analysts had been expecting a full 16% rise in revenue for Q4.
So with Chambers guiding to slightly
Jobs will be front and center Wednesday morning. The Challenger Job Cut Report and ADP employment will be out at 7:30 and 8:15, respectively. By sorting through the two reports, economists should have a fairly good idea on where Friday's government employment data will be reported at. Friday's non farm payrolls are expected to come in at 100,000 with one estimate as low as 40k and the higest

As noted earlier, a ton of earnings come our way tomorrow. Perhaps the biggest focal point on the earnings calendar will be Google (GOOG) after the bell tomorrow where $3.30 a share is expected vs year before $2.29. The straddle is priced at over $20, so the usual huge move is expected and options are priced to the moon. I am not participating.
After the bell, among major earnings tonight:
Black and Decker (BDK) is trading up more than 5% tonight after pre-announcing a big quarterly beat: Black & Decker Sees Higher 1Q Earnings. The stock likely revisits at tough area of resistance in the $90 area on Tuesday.
There was almost no options trading today in BDK ahead of this evening's breaking news.Another pre-announcement comes our way from Callaway Golf (ELY). Four! Earnings will be
What has Jeff Immelt cooked up for tomorrow morning? Actually "cooked" is a bad word to use since its doubtful he will literally be cooking anything himself for breakfast (the hired help can do that for him), and we sure don't want to use the word "cooked" around something like an earnings report that's due from one of the biggest companies this side of the next star system. So bad choice of
Economic calendar features jobless claims and import/export price data.
Friday features the release of the Producer Price Index. With all the talk and nervousness about inflation, the inflation theme will no doubt be front and center again tomorrow.
Earnings are coming Thursday afternoon from a variety of companies including Lam Research (LRCX), and Pier One Imports (PIR).
It looks like
Ohhh.. ahhh.. wow.. woo-hoo... Alcoa (AA) posted an 8.9% rise in 1st quarter earnings thanks to what the Wall Street Journal calls "resurgent" aluminum prices. Lucky for AA that China continues to drive world aluminum demand; it was down 10% in North America during February. The stock was up less than 1% after earnings which will be a bad thing
Wednesday after the bell earnings releases will be
From a calendar standpoint Monday is a quiet day with no major economic releases scheduled and Barron's only listing Delta and Pine Land on Monday morning. The biggest economic release doesn't hit until the release of inflation data on Friday.
Earnings season officially kicks off when Aloca (AA) reports earnings, the first of the 30 Dow Industrial components, on Tuesday. 75 cents a share is
I spent a great afternoon getting to meet a couple of top notch guys from the blogosphere today in New York City, though blogging is only part of what they do.
There's some important economic data on tap for Friday morning:
-Personal income and spending at 8:30 ET each expected to rise by .3% for February.
-NAPM Chicago is expected to rise to 49, which would still indicate weakness in
Brief post tonight due to family related stuff (fun).
Compared with the fireworks of late yesterday afternoon's brief crude oil surge and revelation of an FBI investigation of Beazer Homes (BZH) things are mighty tame this evening. U.S. stock futures are little changed tonight.
Thursday's economic data releases include a final revision of 4th quarter GDP, expected to hold at 2.2% growth and the
Are we going to be waking up to the sight of mushroom clouds and the napalm in the morning? From the way crude oil traders behaved earlier you'd think that was what was in store. Earlier crude spiked above $68 on rumors, since denied, that Iran took shots at Navy warships. Crude has since eased back to about the $63.90 level. April RBOB is up to a whopping $2.09 a gallon rising with the rest of
10:00 ET features the release of important economic data - Existing Home Sales, or sales of used homes. Sales for February are expected to fall to annual rate of 6.26 mln after rising in January to 6.46 mln. This is a data series is produced by the National Association of Realtors so no matter the outcome, we can expected good ole' David Lereah, the NAR's chief economist, to spin it some in way
I spent the last 3 hours researching and writing a post about a number of very important matters and Google Blogger had a "technical problem"; so as I pushed the 'publish' button one of my longest posts just vanished into thin air. Oh well. See you folks in the morning.
June Yen futures have dashed back up by more than 50 points to .8655 and that is enough to put pressure on U.S. stock futures and even the Nikkei 225. Not that a 155 point dip in the Nikkei is all that much mind you, but it plays well into my theme of just how important it is to keep at eye on the YEN with respect to gauging what will happen to money flow. A strong yen is equity negative as
Just yesterday a talking head on one of the financial channels was poo pooing the recent surge in the volatility index as a blip and nothing to be worried about. Volatility is back again... not that it completely left. I unwound the rest of my March VIX calls today at a 100% gain, on top of the quintuples that I enjoyed with the first market swoon. I am still of the conviction that we take out
Very brief as I have been struggling with a stomach virus over the last several hours.
Two key events tomorrow morning are Goldman Sachs (GS) earnings and outlook, as well as Retail Sales. Goldman Sachs earnings are expected at $4.90 according to consensus estimates, but everyone knows they'll beat by a mile. And since everyone knows they'll beat by a mile, the beat is likely to be anti
I am bushed from a weekend of modest celebration of the 2nd annivesary of my kidney transplant. The kidney is still working quite well! This post may be brief.
Stock futures are drifting and not doing much of anything tonight. Andy Swan's Future's Manipulation 101 is a must read to understand how quickly the picture can change WRT to futures. I've actually spent a good amount of time looking at
Front and center Thursday morning at 8:30 ET is the latest Jobless Claims data. A small dip to 335k is expected. The trend has been rising one in recent weeks. Those who bought shares of Freemont General (FMT) on todays more than 20% surge on buyout speculation may be tempted to sell tomorrow, and perhaps at a big loss. Freemont has consented to an FDIC cease and desist order. The company also earlier cautioned that there's no assurance a sale of its assets will be completed. Earlier today, investors seemed to think that White Knights were lined up around the corner not only for FMT but the rest of the subprimes as shares in many rallied. But here's a guy who might be loading up on more subprime shares: Second Curve Capital's Thom Brown sees opportunity, according to the Wall Street Journal. Considering the beating Brown's fund has taken over the last few months, this would definitely be in the realm of, "THANK YOU SIR MAY I HAVE ANOTHER." I had long forgotten the name Thomas Brown,
Well here it is the first week of March and it's going down to Zero Fahrenheit tonight. Whenever the temp drops below 15 outside, this home office with three windows gets chilly even with the heat cranked to 73 so I am wearing a jacket as I write this INdoors. But it will get warmer this weekend, we turn the clocks ahead, etc. Even with the cold air temp to 18 at noon today, the near mid September powered sun felt nice.It also felt nice to be able to step away from the markets a bit today to take care of some internal blog related items. I've put up a quote tracking application to the right which I hope will be of some use. You can click the tickers to get detailed information. The Dow average will be live once Dow Jones gets my monthly pound of flesh to display automatic quotes on this blog. Indeed the markets were/are oversold and bounced. It could have started yesterday too, or tomorrow and Fibonacci 50% retracement at S&P 1405 is beckoning the bulls. That's only anot
The Tuesday preview is late tonight because I took a break from all the charts and data. I vegged out with the kids and watched something totally mindless - the Sponge Bob movie with the kids. It was amusing, but the tv show is actually funnier. That's an expensive Hollywood production for you.Things are looking far better than last night at this time with stock futures coming up green instead of crimson as markets in Asia stage modest rebounds including a 131 point gain for the Nikkei 225 into their midday break. Perhaps we're going to see a turnaround Tuesday? Heaven help the bulls if we wake up to red tomorrow morning, though. The gains in many of the Asian markets are the first in five days with some of the relief coming from a Yen that is just a tad bit weaker tonight, down by about 45 points basis Yen futures that I watch. If we get a spurt out of the gate tomorrow morning, that will be something of a novelty for the bulls since last weeks 400 point slide. Instead of weakness to
It has been a great day today. My mother in law came over today and gave my wife and me a chance to step out for a dinner sans the three children to celebrate our 14th anniversary. Time sure flies. As some of you know, it was a perfect match in more ways than one since next week will mark the 2nd anniversary of my kidney transplant, which wouldn't have happened were it not for the donation of the kidney from my... wife! I am a very blessed to be married to such a wonderful lady.Stock futures are looking shabby, no doubt as investors fret about the deepening subprime situation which followed a rough day for the stock market on Friday. S&P futures are also weak as the Yen surges again. Yen futures are up another 80 points tonight to .8660 - not far from resistance in the .87 area; so carry trade concerns remain an issue as well.11,782 is the 200 day moving average on the Dow-30. Can the bears gun for it this week, or next and help the bulls look a little more serious when they say it's

Earlier today I talked about the slide in the XBD. Here it is again, with a view value added items. The upper chart is a ratio of the XBD to the S&P 500 and look what's happened: an uptrend of better than 5 months has clearly been broken over the last week. I'd say this would be an important red flag to keep an eye on where the overall health of the stock market is concerned. Where, afterall, would the stock market bull be without the brokers over the last 3 years? The brokers have been among the strongest of leaders.John Murphy over at Stockcharts.com sent an email late this afternoon noting that a big weekly MACD divergence is only in the process of forming... We'll have to wait to see how things pain out this week where weekly MACD is concerned, but already, weekly RSI is looking shabbyl. It's just another interesting piece of the puzzle that has featured an overall resiliant market with a capital-R, yet signs continue to pop up of trouble on the horizon.Tuesday is going to featu
8;30 ET we get the final revision of 4th quarter Gross Domestic Product. The consensus estimate is for a big DOWNWARD revision to show growth of 2.3%. This consensus number will be important. Anything too far below will scare the stock market into further worries about corporate earnings; too far above 2.3% and inflation worries will grip the markets. GDP price deflator is expected at 1.5%.At 9:45 Chicago NAPM data comes our way. Important stuff here as well on manufacturing. It's forecast to bounce back a bit right to the diffusion line of 50 which would indicate tepid growth. Then at 10, New Home Sales data will be released. An annual pace of just over 1 mln is expected. So there's a good amount of market moving, or disrupting economic data on the way on Wednesday following the Tuesday slump and dump.I talked earlier about the stock market, so let's not beat a dead horse.I decided to take a breather on the gold futures... actually got out at $688 today. Tonight it's down to $671. I
The bulls gave a so so account today by keeping major indices into the plus column by way of a .4% Dow gain, .3 Nasdaq gain and .5 SPX gain. Even a guy like Drudge is left wondering with his headline: "Rebound?" Technically it was a rebound, but it seemed perfunctory - perhaps the embodiement of a dead cat bounce. So at least the market was able to bounce back a bit today, but the advantage is now squarely in the hands of the bears. Below is a chart of the Dow with an overlay of the Relative Strength Index. For the first time since last summer and spring RSI has fallen below 50 and this has not meant good things for the bulls...
